I enjoyed the FF7 compilation. Dirge of Cerberus had awesome music and was an all right game, Crisis Core was amazing, and FF7AC was absent-minded brain-candy. Could have been a lot worse.

I don't think it's especially germane to "advanced sound systems," but Phantasy Star III modulated the music based on a few things. The battle music shifted each round based on your performance and the difficulty of the fight, and the world map song became fuller and added more instruments as your party grew or shrunk in size (and totally changed to a sad song if your hero character was dead). Phantasy Star Online 2 uses a system called Sympathy as well to procedurally generate dynamic music. There's a pretty great interview available with Hideaki Kobayashi (the composer) about it.

I've seen one episode of MLP, and it is 100% not a show for me. Kind of like Adventure Time. I'm sure it has appeal, but it simply is not my thing. But I accept and love Mike, bronyism and all.

Yeah, pretty sure he will be. We're planning an elaborate crime-fighting duo tale to serve as our backstory.

I'm actually looking into that-- though I don't think OCR would have a problem. And as always, thanks a ton for the feedback. Though I've said this to many people, we are actually planning some episodes that will incorporate many of your topic ideas-- boss themes for sure-- and we'll probably do a few episodes on Final Fantasy (NES series, SNES era, PS1 era, etc) and other big ones. And as much as I'd love to cover the entire OST from Scott Pilgrim, it actually would not fall into our coverage, sadly (basically, if the main site covers it in terms of news and reviews, it's fair game for us in the Music section).

And again, thanks very much for the suggestions and feedback-- we ALWAYS appreciate it.

And if you want to throw us a rating/review on iTunes, that's always welcome :) #shill

This is a fascinating topic. I'll be keeping an eye on it :)

I think the thing to realize is that your happy memories with these games and the fun you had do not age poorly-- in their own context and in the time they came out, these games had the power to compel you. When you go back to replay them, they may have aged mechanically, and to say "these archaic mechanics are brilliant!" is disingenuous, but that doesn't mean that the fantastic time you had with it is any less true or valid or you being "a stupid kid."

It's like an old piece of literature. It might become antiquated and wonky as time goes on, but the impact it had in its time was very real and not devalued by it becoming somewhat antiquated-- you simply have to adjust your expectations and realize you're reading something from another era of literature and appreciate it for what it is. This of course doesn't apply all the time, because some stuff DOES manage to avoid this to an extent.

TL;DR: may age mechanically, but you can still appreciate it for what it is.

Same here. The moment it's announced, I'm going to preorder whatever super giga megma assault battery rapid wizard's companion ultra uber sentinel N7 dragon edition they have.

Thanks a ton for the feedback! And I'm glad you pointed that out-- that was an idea I wanted to try to expand on too! You'll see it a teeny bit in episode 3, and if you have any suggestions for a theme you'd like to see us do this with, please let us know! I hope you enjoy the rest :)

And because I thrive on ego alone, be sure to rate and/or review us on iTunes :)

That picture is so Tumblr-appropriate it's not even funny. I also dislike it heartily.

I did. Thank you.

So, if anyone is interested-- please do feel free to offer suggestions for music you'd like to hear, topic ideas, and anything else in this thread. If I don't hear anything, you're going to keep getting topics that fascinate me and Derek :)

No, I think you make a good point. I guess there's a variety of factors involved, at least for me when considering a purchase. I'd never buy MG: Rising at $60, but the moment it's $30 or 40? I'd be happy to pay that price. I think it's quality vs hours vs.... other stuff. Totes complex.
660  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Megami Tensei Topic on: April 02, 2013, 11:59:00 PM
I would agree, CJ. I wouldn't call it all crap, but I think the value of games has been boinked for a while now. I recognize games cost a bundle to make, but for a 4-6 hour game, I'd be way cooler paying $30-40 than $60. Conversely, for a game like SMTIV, which will likely last well over 60 hours (or more, if you want it to), I'm okay with paying a little more. Plus I like to give Atlus money.

I just think that games shouldn't all be locked at "this is the price for this system." I had no problem making my parents pay $85 for Phantasy Star IV when it came out :)
