It's been 4 years, and given the sales of P2:IS and in Japan P2:EP there apparently weren't that many eager fans (though the fact it seems something else blocked release seems to indicate there's some odd problem that cropped up).

Plus if they REALLY didn't care they wouldn't even bother with the PS1 game, they hadn't been making a habit of bringing out anything pre-PS2 to digital services, why start now?

The original Persona *desperately* need a proper re-translation. P4 didn't.

Agreed. I wanted both P3:P and P4G much more than P1 and P2, personally.

Why in god's name would want a second version of games you've already played fairly recently? Or in P3's case - twice already?

Because I didn't play them already on consoles, and I hated P1 on PS1.

I never had HUGE issues with it (though maybe it's because I just learned to compensate), but sometimes the game was a little bit sluggish in executing your actions-- the enemies were sluggish in that regard, too, but it did feel a bit wonky at times.

I know some people have speculated that it's related to how much you've spent on the PSN Store.  That's easier to track, anyway.  So if you're only buying physical games I guess that wouldn't matter...

That could be. Although I've been on PS+ forever and I THOUGHT I had bought a good amount of stuff, but maybe not in comparison to others. I COULD HAVE USED THIS TO BUY SOMETHING CHRONO CROSS FOR MY VITA

Did anyone *really* want a portable version of P4 so soon after the original release?

How many people go through the same experience, of not realizing how very real and very serious mortality can be?

And then you do get that sudden realization and it's terrifying and hard to keep down, and you're staying up till four or five in the morning every night because you can't stand losing consciousness, especially not when it's dark out, and then everything makes you jumpy and you're sleep deprived to the point of being incoherent and inexplicably /cold/ all the time. And it goes on for months.

Or maybe that's just me.

Or you shoot Ultima spells at a planet. Different strokes. :D

Also, Persona 4 is fucking awesome. It's been a while since I played a Shin Megami game, and it's clear they still rock the house and own the show.

You just won all of the internets I have to give.

I was on board right when you said, "FFIX's dark 'cause on the surface it ISN'T dark."

This is the exact point I try to make so often. Real darkness is relative, and if there's just DARKBLACK BLAR MY SOUL IS SO WRETCHED for the entire experience, it's hard to relate to it. FFIX starts out happier, but it gets into some deep and dark business. I mean, the bad guy's entire deal in the end is that he is TERRIFIED of death (kind of like Lord Voldemort :3). It's not hamfisted (at least, not until Necron, but that was basically a nod to the rest of the series and its SURPRISE BITCHES final bosses). But the point is, because it was relatable, you are able to actually empathize with the people in the game. That line from No. 56 is relevant, too. How many people go through the same experience, of not realizing how very real and very serious mortality can be?

Maybe it's not the point you were making, but this is exactly why I enjoy games like Tales of the Abyss and FFIX-- they're light-hearted on the surface, and that helps you become attached to and relate to the characters. THEN, when crazy business starts flying about, you actually care.

Yeah, DDS2 is IMO the pinnacle of the turn-based battle system. I love FFIX and its combat, but it can definitely feel a bit wonky sometimes with the pacing of the turns and when actions actually happen. I think you're right, though, that it was pretty common in PS1-era RPGs to take freaking forever with fights.

Of course, that said, I still love FFIX longtime and ignore all of its flaws :]

Why aren't we talking more here about the soundtrack??  It's, like, awesome.

Yes it is. I can't wait for the full release. Rei Kondo is pretty fantastic.

TL;DR Atlus deserves a little more credit than I think you're giving them.

After the region locking debacle and their deliberate shafting of consumers......no.

I'm with you here. Europe got shafted big time.  I'm sure shafting them was not their intent, but they had to have known how slow things get localized for Europe.  I feel bad for them.  Did they even announce a release date yet?  Last I checked, they didn't.

At least Europeans can sleep soundly at night knowing that the profit margins were extra good in Japan.

I'm generally the first person to hate on companies with anti-consumer policies, so I can see where you guys are coming from here, but I really think Atlus, in general, is not a company I think of when "anti-consumer" comes to mind. I mean, they publish pretty niche titles, and they ARE a business. I can't imagine the profit margins are super duper high on their games. I don't like what happened with the P4A region-locking either, but I just think assuming they're lazy or anti-consumer because of these things is maybe directing the hate in the wrong direction. Yeah, it sucks, but I just can't hop on board the hate/conspiracy/lazy train.

Yeah, I guess all that effort they put into their re-releases like P4G are just water under the bridge when it comes to one misstep.

779  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Fire Emblem 3DS on: February 19, 2013, 10:15:59 PM
Give FE12 a try then. It has better tactical gameplay, and a more serious plot without waifus. And yes it does have casual mode and support convos, you won't miss out.

I really didn't like FE Awakening at all. I even think Sacred Stones is better.

Which one is 12? I'm not concerned about casual mode, but a better plot and no waifus woudl be nice.
780  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Fire Emblem 3DS on: February 19, 2013, 04:11:01 PM
Yeah, I agree. It's not a bad game at all, and I can see why people enjoy it. I just feel disconnected from everything, like the game knows its a game and it's winking at me the whole time going "yeah I know I'm a silly game but I have so much gameplay!" It works, but I think it's just not for me. I could have sworn the Fire Emblem I played on GBA had a more serious and less goofball story, but it's been so long that I barely remember.
