You have unlimited ammo when hanging upside down. I've done it twice and seen someone else do it. You also have unlimited when Joel gets injured.

Oh, Ash, I totally agree with you. My view is that while I think his excuse is pure PR, Subspace was entertaining for approximately the 5 hours it took to finish. They should be spending their money elsewhere, and I think they could have just said "yeah a story mode isn't exactly why you people keep coming back to Smash so we aren't wasting time on it."

I didn't really have any bugs that I can recall either. Obviously with a game this elaborate, some people are gonna have them and some aren't, but my experience felt very solid, and watching my brother play through the entire game, his was as well. And even then, glitches never really bother me all that much, but that's just my personal experience.

Vis-a-vis shooting and enemies-- yes, I enjoyed fighting both immensely. Fighting humans involved totally different tactics than Infected, and I liked that.

And like I said, it comes down to story versus systems. Some sequences in the game "broke rules" in order to change up the experience. I know Rob didn't like those (an Infected spots you no matter what, you're hanging upside down with unlimited ammo, etc), but I thought they were excellent and kept you on your toes.

While I'm sorry others didn't have the same experience, this game is, again, easily one of my favorites I've ever played. If you didn't like the story until the end, that's totally cool, but I was 100% invested. The acting was outstanding, the voicing was perfect, and I was completely invested in all of the characters. Where ND really succeeded was including so many different ages and kinds of characters, which basically ensured that no matter who you are, you can relate to someone. As someone very close to my two brothers,
Sam and Henry's arc left me literally stunned. When I watched my brother play through the game this week, I could see that he was moved by it as well.
If you look at it as "THIS IS JUST A ZOMBIE STORY," sure, that kind of reductionism will make you value it less. But The Walking Dead is "JUST A ZOMBIE STORY," and everyone seems to adore that. Really it's about how well you get to know these characters, and in this regard, TLOU is an unmitigated success. I will remember the characters in the game forever, I enjoyed the gameplay, and I adored the fact that Naughty Dog didn't feel the need to spell out absolutely everything in the game. Naughty Dog made a world that I felt like I knew incredibly well despite only seeing certain sides of it.

So yeah, my GOTY all up in here. Totally cool if others don't feel that way, but I'll argue dissenters into oblivion :)

Finally beat this. My game of the year, without even a second thought.

I love it. It's oddly calm, it's unsettling because you can sit there and ask yourself "is there a right choice?" Would you be able to sacrifice a daughter-like figure (or anyone, for that matter)'s life to save humanity? Sure, on paper it seems like a no-brainer, but when it comes down to a person you know sitting right in front of you whose life ends, you end up with what I'm calling "Joel's choice." It's so gray and the game doesn't attempt to steer you in either direction and I love Naughty Dog for pulling it off.

I could gush about this game for ages. This is one of those examples of "I absolutely don't care about the flaws because the experience was flat-out fantastic." I'm sure people could (and have) pointed out flaws, but there was nothing to me that ever came up and hurt the overall product for me. Easily my GOTY. Naughty Dog continues to have never made a game I didn't like.

Star Ocean 3 transitions fairly sharply from fantasy to sci-fi genre.

Yeah see, this is EXACTLY what I'm talking about. Especially when you recall that SO3 started off AS a Sci-Fi (going so far as to start on future Earth/Not-Star Trek's Federation), then dumped that to become yet another Swords and Sorcery JRPG, only to abandon that to become a Sci-Fi adventure about repulsing the Not-Romulan Empire with Jesus Beams, only to abandon that for a galactic apocalypse/not-Third Impact, only to abandon that with a Matrix ripoff and trying to keep a company from shutting down the MMORPG that is the Universe.

Yes, SO3 makes transitions, but each transition is more stupid and ill conceived than the last. In fact, its so bad that the SO series is almost completely screwed in terms of future installments set after SO3 because of the way that SO3 went about its business. It'd take nothing short of a full on Reboot to the Head to make a Star Ocean "5" not retcon the hell out of SO3's ending (of course, this being Tri-ace, they'll eventually make a direct sequel anyway because they simply cannot write).

Ultimately, anybody can make a transition to something else. But there's no guarantee that the transition will be any good, and generally speaking, I find it actually surprising and impressive to see an anime or a manga or a VN end in something other than a disappointing clusterfuck of completely wasted potential.

It's definitely drawing a lot from SMT1 and 2, and I think those are things in its favor.

Apparently, the reason why reviews say that the characters are "bland" is because they're being mostly biased with Persona 3 & 4 where character development was in high order.

So yes, the characters aren't bland if you don't even compare it to its sister series.

Yeah, I kind of expected a lot of 'WHY ISN'T IT LIKE PERSONA?!'

Derek and I have pretty much decided it's Digital Devil Megami Tensei. It's got the characterization that I enjoyed in DDS, but the gameplay of SMTIII. I'm in love. Literally haven't been able to put it down.
