I think these handhelds will have a longer lifespan than normal, and I think Vita will slowly pick up Steam. If anything, Sony's smart attempts to court the indie audience will fill out the library, and as the numbers pick up, we'll see more released for them.

Dammit, where's that Fry "shut up and take my money" picture when I need it!

I don't think Rob has played Sands. I have, though, and I agree.

Rookie move. Who uses a bow on a giant monster when he's that close! WHY DOESN'T HE HAVE HIS SHIELD UP!?!?

I have to disagree that it could have gotten away with whatever it wanted. People made it their mission to destroy that game for being different, and by god, they succeeded.

Plus, it WAS an excellent game. It's not the inbred technical extravaganza that was DmC4, and I understand people wanted more of that, but that isn't what the game set out to be. It was completely successful in doing what it set out to do.

And Metroid Prime WAS fantastic.

EDIT:

BUT MEGAMAN GUYS, SRS

I think the game sounded like a fantastic concept, but I'm sure Megaman "fans" would have booed it out the door, just like they did with DmC and Metroid Prime before it came out. Absolutely would have played that and then been sad when everyone boycotted it because it's not classic-styled Megaman and OMG BADASS WESTERN DESIGN IS DOOM

Just remember to keep in mind that it's Rob's Top 5-- not an RPGFan top 5 or an 'Overall, all time Top 5."

And Rob's beef with XS1 was that... actually, I'm just going to copy-paste what I wrote on Facebook.

Quote
I think Xenosaga episode 1 had great WORLD BUILDING, but almost nothing in terms of narrative. It introduced fascinating characters and then did almost nothing with them--I watched it entirely online, and then played XS2 and 3, and found them to be, narratively speaking, much better games. I think Rob's issue is more with the fact that it spends so much time building up a conflict, and then when that conflict happens... "here's a thing to fight, okay end." Comparatively little happens in XS1 versus 2 and 3. Also, as the music guy, I must link to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zFLYzlSjm4 (XS2 spoilers)

and also

I dunno-- as a movie, I enjoyed it, but I've always felt that if you're going to create characters, you can't just 'TELL' me who they are, you have to show me-- and I think XS1 sort of failed in that regard. They threw plenty of "this is who Ziggy/Jr./chaos" are because exposition, but had relatively little in the way of those characters actually doing anything that made me understand them as characters. It was enjoyable, but I think as a prologue chapter it could have done a lot more-- especially in light of how fantastic the character development and actual narrative "action" were in 2 and 3-- so much more happened in those games in terms of scope as compared to XS1.

I do agree that worldbuilding and character development are essential, though. I'd go as far as to say character development is the MOST important facet of any RPG story.

Could be that they're waiting for the summer because that's generally a slower release time, and the drought would give the game a better chance of scoring some extra impulse sales.

I'm not sure how to add people to groups, but I'll see what I can do.

In other news, I played for three hours. I hate MMOs, and I was hooked on FFXIV. Seems like it has my favorite parts of GW2, FFXI, and LOTRO, and I especially enjoy the exploration. I don't know what 1.0 was like, but this feels very worthy. Will definitely be picking it up at launch.

I enjoyed the FF7 compilation. Dirge of Cerberus had awesome music and was an all right game, Crisis Core was amazing, and FF7AC was absent-minded brain-candy. Could have been a lot worse.

I don't think it's especially germane to "advanced sound systems," but Phantasy Star III modulated the music based on a few things. The battle music shifted each round based on your performance and the difficulty of the fight, and the world map song became fuller and added more instruments as your party grew or shrunk in size (and totally changed to a sad song if your hero character was dead). Phantasy Star Online 2 uses a system called Sympathy as well to procedurally generate dynamic music. There's a pretty great interview available with Hideaki Kobayashi (the composer) about it.
