1  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Avatar the Last Airbender Book One on: August 10, 2010, 01:01:49 PM
Hello everyone, I hope you are all having a fantastic summer.
I would like to present to you an Avatar RPG. I'm sure this isn't the first one made, and hope you enjoy my take on the material.
If you enjoy this game be sure to check out my previous RPG game Quest for the Red Hills.

Download The Last Airbender RPG here:
*deleted*
I use Dropbox for my download file, the nice thing about dropbox is that if I do run across any bugs I can update the download link without having to edit the posted link. Meaning, what you download is the latest version.

Overview:
The game follows the first book of the series, Water. The game does not feature every single episode, so please don't blow your top off. I had to pick and choose what I wanted to put in the game and I tried to pick what I felt would best create a solid story flow without boring the player. The game is very much open world, so you can choose to play it however you want. But main story events are in order. The story is told in the old school text and picture format. The game starts with Aang being found in the ice and ends at the North Pole. The game features the classic Final Fantasy and Mario RPG styled side view battle system. I put special focus on mini games and side quest as well. Such as an in game Casino were players can gamble on many different minigames, a jail / bounty system, a high environment interactivity level, for example players can pick wild flowers, go fishing, camp, hunt etc.

Audio
The game features music from the Avatar TV series as well as other classic music from early 90s RPG games that I felt fit the mood.

Characters:
Obviously you will be playing with characters from the animated TV show. You play as Aang, Katara, and Saka. Along the way you will meet other characters from the show such as Appa, Zuko and more.

What is Last Airbender?
If you live under a cultural rock, here is the overview thanks to wikipedia:
Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a fantasy world that is home to humans, fantastic animals, and spirits. Human civilization is divided into four nations: the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Air Nomads, and the Fire Nation. Each nation has its own natural element, on which it bases its society. Within each nation exists an order called "Benders" who have the innate power and ability to control and manipulate the eponymous element of their nation. The show’s creators assigned each bending art its own style of martial arts, causing it to inherit the advantages and weaknesses of the martial arts it was assigned. The four types of bending are Waterbending, Earthbending, Firebending, and Airbending.

Let me know if you catch any major bugs, though I have tested it and the game should run fine. Note that story elements and spelling errors are not bugs and will be ignored. Let me stress that this is not exactly word for word like the show. Just need to get that down, because I know how you fanboys get.

Details:
Runtime is about 4 hours, depending on how you play
Difficulty: Medium

Soooo...Did you make it, what's the story, what's the specific average game length, (# of hours,) and how does it play? That should be standard information given when offering an RPG. ^__^ (It is free though...)

Yup. Took me forever, but finally got it done. Play through is about 6 to 8 hours, but as with any game that really just depends on how good you are.
The story revolves around a girl named Alyssa. One day she awakens to the sound of her neighbors daughter yelling, telling about a guard standing outside her door. She talks to the guard and discovers that she is being called forth by the King, Leodan. After traveling to the capital city Portwell, she is introduced to Mel and Nate. The King informs her that the lands are being attacked by a evil monster, Cyrus, unleashed by the Kingdoms barbarous southern neighbor the Horum. Mel and Nate accompany here on her quest to stop Cyrus the Terrible, and set out south to the RED HILLS where the beast is said to live. Its a fairly straight forward story structure. To spice things up a bit from the other RPG games posted here, I replaced most of the artwork with custom art and I also implemented some cool new features like a bounty system and even a jail system where you can get arrested for doing crime. There are also jobs you can take up to get money such as wood cutting and milking cows etc.
If you do play it, let me know what you think.

For the past two years almost, the genre of Science Fiction and Fantasy has been in a serious drought.

I was just looking at Amazon as the fifth book in George Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series is now available for preorder....and i realized something that makes me quite violent.

Of the top 20 books in Sci-Fi and fantasy, about half of the top sellers are vampire-style novels, and most of them are by female authors. Now I hate stereotypes that are easily proven incorect, but seriously, there are three parts to a female authored vampire book: Sex and Homoeroticism with a dash of vampiric action. Deny it all you want, Twilight has ruined the vampire novel genre.

But.....back on point, Fantasy has sorely lacked great works over the last couple years, I've tried so many things: In the Name of the Wind was okay, Neal Stephenson's new book isnt quite what I was hoping, but it felt a lot like the Baroque series which I found personally difficult to enjoy.

As Dan and I both kind of pointed out in another thread, Terry Goodkind is painful to read now, Robert Jordan is dead and even while alive...was still written like Tolkien (dont get me started), albiet a great story. George Martin seems to be the only heavy hitter that currently has a series going that is worth a damn, and he's taking his SWEET TIME

Am I totally off base? Have I missed out on great titles that have been released recently? Or am I just better off rereading the good stuff from the last decade and delving back into the Top 100 Must Read books? (which btw, I finished some Hemingway last summer, good shit)

Frustration has settled in; it's not common for me to get this worked up about stuff, video games dont even piss me off when similar situations arise.

supply and demand.
