1  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The tri-Ace General Discussion (& Star Ocean 5) Thread on: Today at 03:22:46 PM
Derailing the current trend of conversation, I've advanced Star Ocean 5 a bit more (6 and a half hours in, WOWZER). As I progress, more and more I feel like there is no soul in this game. Characters talk quietly and without emotion aside from Emerson who would be just awesome if he wasn't just thrown in randomly to the party. The story is progressing by simply saying "I can't help you, try going here" which is ludicrously lazy, even by star ocean standards. The battle system, dear god the reason I love star ocean for years, is so...unfinished. Great concepts and awesome ideas riddled with such poor execution and lazy copy/paste jobs. The graphics for some things are quite enjoyable and lovely looking, but then you see the same 4 npcs everywhere and you get disgruntled at how godawful they look too. Everything about this game can be summed up in one phrase...

Great ideas, piss poor execution.

Also, the camera has become my worst enemy.

So basically, someone spent the game's budget on blackjack and hookers and they had to make something with what little was left?

For some reason, this made me laugh so much

Even if Star Ocean did take place on a backwater planet for a while, why not let it be a story about a kid who's fascinated by the stars, fascinated by the idea of traveling in space, and loves to study, but everyone in his/her backwater community thinks s/he's an aimless dreamer or just plain stupid and should "get your head out of the clouds and keep your feet on the ground.  Your parents are getting older and you need to run their farm or inherit their weapon shop or take over the inn."

"...to sail the star ocean.  That's always been my dream.  This little town is great and all, but I want more out of life.  Not just see the world, but see beyond it."

And the story becomes a heartfelt story about a dreamer who perseveres in the face of opposition.  Against all odds, they find their way to rocket science school, endure the harshness of school elitism, create a few prototype rockets that fail miserably, but never lose sight of the star ocean.

This little idea of mine isn't reinventing the wheel as far as JRPG storytelling goes, but it's at least trying to make "star ocean" a thematic element.

Change "stars" for "sky" and you have Grandia 3 right there.

Business as usual then with the whole "stuck on medieval planets" thing. I doubt they'll ever change that aspect of the games honestly, seems like they don't think that's a flaw with the series.

I like SO for this though =/

Ronixis and Iria in SO1
Expel in SO2 and
Crashing in Airyglyph all the way to Crossel in SO3

These are the things I like the most about SO.

One thing I found lacking in that episode is the part where he gets 'heart black handed'. They changed things a bit and I'm not a fan of this version.

Code:
What he was actually trying to say to Emilia was that she saved him when he was completely lost and scared in this new world. Emilia says that's not the case (it only happened on his original run and the current reality happened differently). THEN he tries to explain it more and he gets heart chocked.

The whole things makes him, like the rest of everything in this scene, look completely crazy.

EDIT: oh yeah, they also skipped the part that shows that Puck is like really powerful. So, yeah, Puck is top kek.

Can't you USB a controller instead? I believe the game has full controller support.

Heck, even common brands are slightly different, such as Nutella (the German version is slightly darker and sweeter than the Nutella sold in Dutch stores).

That's a big thing between Canada and the US.
We share like tons of brands and foods and they all taste slightly differently on each side.

One thing that's pretty constant is that everything in Canada has more salt than everyone else. Seems we like salt.

Tales of Phantasia - Did Heimdall. So while I want to note that I still like the game a lot, the passivity of the enemies in the random encounters is a bit... concerning. Like, boss fights are still super-involving, but the enemies in random encounters... barely attack at all. I'm not sure if that's an issue in the SNES version too but...

Wait wait wait... you're playing the GBA version, aren't you?
It's the only version with that 'feature'. The enemies do pretty much nothing... ever.
Even worst, all attacks 'stun' as if it was a critical hit; including enemies that are supposed to be immune to critical hits (golems, bosses, etc.)

Anyone wondering how easy this could make the game just needs to look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxO4jI3LKmQ&list=PL8EAAA27D1CCBFE3C&index=18

I'm not one of those angry vegetarians who'll give you a hard time about eating meat... unless the done-ness of your steak is more than medium rare or the done-ness of your fish is more than rare. In those cases, you've done it wrong, completely ruined and mutilated beautiful cuts of meat by overcooking them, and you now have a vegetarian pointing and laughing at you.

But I mutilate my meat into awesome taste =(

I like Re:Zero,  but I am hoping animating WN that have been converted into LN isn't the next big thing for anime.  In the beginning they start out decent but they just devolve into overpowered main character wankery. The ones that do not go the blatantly op route tend to be Gary Stu author inserts.

You should read Re:Monster or Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei.
(These are the worst I know of... but I'm sure I haven't even begun diving into the cesspool of self-insert OP wankery)
At least I'll praise Re:Monster in the sense that girls don't revolve around the MC wanting his dick, they all get the D ... no beating around the bush there (man, so much innuendo in so few words)

I'd go with Nature's Gift instead.

I'm 24. Honestly, the docs couldn't find anything, so it could've been a false alarm (sympathy pains, Thinking about my dad's heart attack), or at worse an intense amount of stress...I've had a ton of that the past 8 months, and I really did spend all of yesterday depressed. That said, I had been having chest problems and asthma for the past 4 weeks...anyways, I'll save the rest for the doctors tommorrow...

Unless it turns out to be succubi, then I'll be talking to a priest.

About things that feel like a heart attack but aren't:

I once had this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tietze_syndrome which felt exactly like having a heart attack.
It usually happens in men between 20-30.
Lasts about a dozen weeks.
