So...people with strong opinions shouldn't review games?

I'd say that they are more inclined to forgo objectivity than the alternative.

This probably won't make me popular, but...

While I agree, as you guys said in the podcast, that a women is perfectly within her rights to review Dragon Crown.. I would also be inclined to say that some people (either genders) are not the best to review borderline games.

While aggregating the results from the multiple categories (music, gameplay, art, controls, story and whatever) for the final score, it sometimes feels like there's a hidden -2/10 because "it offended me" and I think that should not be there.

So yes, on one hand, anyone can review the game. On the other, having someone review a game that is against their values and morals will generally yield a less than pleasant reaction from the actual target audience.

Lastly, I'm not saying that the alternative, where only people part of the hive mind review the game, is a better, since that would just be a giant circle jerk.

For the bosses, I find that if you equip the right artes, the bosses are pushovers... and if not, you get my Jiao post above.
When a normal punch does 30 damage and an elemental weakness mystic art does 4000... there's a huge gap.

Also, the 30% elemental resistance skills, I find, are pretty much mandatory.

I've stopped upgrading the shops and I'm basically walking around with crap gear.
The normal encounters are still piss easy on hard, but at least the last boss I fought gave me a pretty hard time.

I've gotten used to dealing with endless swarms of minions because half the boss, at the point I'm at, summoned minions.
What's up with that?

Dice - I won't complain about the dungeons because up to now, it's still better than Graces F (not that that was hard to beat)

I started Saturday morning and I'm like 2 dungeons later.
If it makes you feel better, you are creeping towards the end of chapter 1.

Speaking of chapters, I really REALLY like that in the quest/side-event tracker, they tell you precisely until which chapter you can do a quest.
That way, you know if you can leave one for later or if you need to do it now.

I think the game offsets the low amount of outfits with a ton of attachment. I'm kind of OK with that I guess.
(sunglasses + bed hair on the butler ftw)

I hate travelling... so I guess I'll be that guy in 30 years.

Well, I did just beat him on the 4th try... Basically concentrated on the minions and abused chained arts to pump out the required damage to quickly diminush the minion numbers.
That was quite a bump in difficulty =/
1929  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tales of Xillia on: August 11, 2013, 02:20:24 AM
I take it back. The game WAS a piece of cake on hard... until I got to Jiao.

Holy fucking hell! What the fuck is up with this boss?
At low health he just roams around in iron stance killing everyone with AoE blasts while making sure there is ALWAYS 4 minions summoned.
This feels WORST than Vesperia when you got to the boss with the flowers.

Valkyrie Profile ?

Hours later and the game is still really easy on hard.
I can't understand anyone playing this on normal or moderate...
1932  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tales of Xillia on: August 10, 2013, 05:35:48 PM
I did it for a little bit in the import version and it just seemed like the enemies had a lot more health.  Granted, I only did it for a few battles.

Yeah, they take longer to go down but I'm still nowhere near getting game overed.
What are you guys playing on? I feel really bummed that there is no incentive to playing on high difficulty in this one =(

EDIT: Also Jude + Alvin = DEMONIC HAM !!!
1933  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tales of Xillia on: August 10, 2013, 02:11:56 PM
So started playing this morning.

- Picked Jude
- Millia doesn't have a lisp, it's the audio recording quality that is shit.
- I'm in the first area and I switched the game to hard. I don't even feel a difference (in difficulty or reward)
- I liked that the first boss battle, winning was optional. It made me feel awesome when I beat her the second time.
- What's the difference between save and quick save ???

^ for VP2

I'd recommend reading about sealstone pouches (http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/931102-/50836463)
They are very easily missable and not having them is a serious gimping.

This gear problem always reminds me of Ragnarok Online which has the answer to the problem but nobody ever realized it.

In RO, you have to be very lucky and dedicated to get the best gear.
I played for years up to the point were I had a lvl 97 Champion (about a 3 year commitment)

My armor was still the armor that drops off mobs anyone lvl 40+ can kill.
The 2 upgrades possible were on really strong bosses that me and my guild never managed to beat.
Did I ever feel bad about wearing the easily accessible armor? Not really. The difference between the 3 armor is very slight.
The 2 upgrades are definitively better and I would equip those without a second thought, but it's small enough that I never felt bad about not having them.
Although it let me dream about it... and keep trying. Gods knows how many times we challenged Valkyrie Rangris...

[1] means a card slot; cards vary in power and usefulness but generally, you want a card slot.
The Best armor in the game has 11 defense for comparison. Defense is in % of physical damage reduced.

Saint's Robe [1]

Holy Robe
DEF 7 MDEF + 5
Demon -15%.
Shadow -10%.

Valkyrian Armor [1]
All Stats + 1
Increase resistance to Silence status by 50% (Mage, Archer, Acolyte Class)
Increase resistance to Stun status by 50% (Swordman, Merchant, Thief Class)

--- World of Warcraft ---

Huge difference between heroics gear and normal gear.
Huge difference between raid gear and heroics gear.
Huge difference between tier gear and raid gear.

Of course, people are going to want the gear in content they shouldn't be in, because the difference is big enough that the gear can carry you.
