Oh jeeze, lots of posts. Well I've played Devil Survivor 2 and Disgaea. I thought Disgaea was FAAAAR to complicated for me, but I do LOVE Devil Survivor 2. I might check this one out. I'm a sucker for a good relationship system.

The battle system of Growlanser is much less complicated than games like Disgaea and FF Tactics.  And unlike most tactical / strategy RPGs, it does not use a rigid grid-based system; you choose the path you want the characters to follow and they advance in real-time.

I dunno about it being more or less complicated but I do know that growlanser requires actual strategy and disgaea doesn't

Klyde - do check out riviera.  Its the only story/character focused game in the series.  The other dept. Heaven games all have a strong combat focus.  Has relationship building and ending for each party member like growlanser

My most anticipated game of the year.

Unless you hate rpgs and anime you should like this game.

Alisha yea the judgement battles are the only big complaint I have.  Some of them are just way too hard to get past and may require hours of follower grinding.

I'm on chapter 6 now.  The game is really good and much better than I expected it to be.  I really really want it to sell well enough that they bring out the sequel, this is a quality game.  Likeable characters, great voice dubbing, good music, lots of customization, tons of content, etc

bad news but I thought it might happen based on the stuff I've been hearing the last few months

I decided to give this one a shot and see how I like it.  I don't own any Idea Factory games or anything Compile Heart has done.  I know their stuff generally gets slammed in reviews but yeah, I'm gonna give it a shot.

yeah For Answer is great

Man I had no idea this was coming out in March!!  I even got the JP demo and messed with it a bit.  I'll certainly be getting this.

don't you just have to go to one of your party members in the PMB headquarters, open your item menu, and "use" the friendship medal?

can you all recommend and anime for a newbie? I grew up w/ shit like robotech, fist of the northstar, records of the lodoss war (some of it)....
I don't like the "dragonball" type shit. Persona-style has always intrigued the fuck out of me but I don't want to watch an anime of that until I actually finish one of them.

It'd help if you recommend one available on hulu or netflix

try Darker than Black.  it's got a decent amount of action but it's more mature, not just a bunch of spikey haired people doing powerups and ninja jutsus.  it feels very "not anime" as far as anime go.  I think sci fi fans could enjoy it even if they don't normally watch anime

I'm just happy we're getting it in English.  Everyone who likes good RPGs should get this game.  Unless you hate anime and/or portable games.

Vampire Master Dark Crimson.  A manga by the guy who does the Growlanser games and Plastic Little, Satoshi Urashihara.  Apparently he's releasing an artbook, and I decided to check out a manga he did (I remember liking Plastic Little way back when).

Aside from the fact the man's style is really dated, he draws naked women beautifully, I guess (them nipple details).  And while I only read a few pages of the manga, because it was stupid, I find the man hilarious for his dated-ness.  What I loved about some of the manga and anime from the 90's was the either "convenient censorship" (like a hair strand or some ripping clothes covering up the nipple and vag) or on the other hand, how the story would have it's females get naked *at any cost*.  There is the minor third type, which is framing a scene to make sure it shows the breasts than the actual person speaking being centred.  Some evil dude will just whisk the girl's clothes away.  Some demon will summon dark-tentacle-like things to raise her shirt -- anything to show nudity.

If you don't mind the boobies, I recommend VMDC for being a porn but not crossing that bridge completely: hilarity ensues.

(I actually think I spent more time typing this than reading ti though)

I read some of that a long time ago.  Love the guy's art to death but he cannot write his way out of a paper bag.  If he wrote the story for Growlanser those games would be automatically ass, so it's good that he only did the artwork lol.

Also, the game is trying too hard to be "EPIC"

I'm no epicologist, but I reckon that was the point.

that's true
