The Rest / General Discussions / Re: When did you get into gaming?

I remember playing Pac-Man on the Atari 2600 at about 5 years old. I'd go to my uncle's house and play Mario/Duck Hunt, Tecmo Bowl, Ninja Gaiden, Double Dragon, Metroid, Blaster Master, and the Guardian Legend (still one of my favorite games to this day). A year or so later, I was introduced to RPGs with Dragon Warrior and it totally blew my mind. On top of that, my mom got me a NES for Christmas. Then came Final Fantasy 1, Wizardry, Battle of Olympus, Faxanadu, Destiny of an Emperor, and Crystalis. I also started playing strategy games around this time too, such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Gemfire, Nobunaga's Ambition, and Genghis Khan.
The Nintendo-hard era was truly awesome!

I recently purchased Shin Megami Tensei : Nocturne and I haven't been disappointed. I'm just over 10 hrs in and I'm having a blast at the Cathedral of Shadows (fusion is fun).

What I'm missing are the hidden gems, What hidden gems, for example, if I may ask? I Miss The Sunrise, by Deltree. http://rpgmaker.net/games/2732/Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis, by Neok. http://rpgmaker.net/games/272/A Blurred Line, by Lys86. http://rpgmaker.net/games/92/Forever's End, by NicoB. http://rpgmaker.net/games/650/Starless Umbra, by dragonheartman. http://rpgmaker.net/games/407/Hero's Realm, by kentona http://rpgmaker.net/games/82/Exit Fate, by SCF. http://site.scfworks.com/?page_id=3And many more than that. Sure some of them use rips of other games graphics and music, while others (I Miss The Sunrise for example) use the RM engine, but everything else is original. Just give em a shot and I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Lunar Eternal Blue (I just have to finish the epilogue)
Wild Arms 2 (I'm basically at the final dungeon, but I wanna beat some of the super bosses first)
Final Fantasy XII (I completely lost interest after a few hours of gameplay)
Dark Cloud 2 (Beat everything but the Zelmite Mines)
Unlimited Saga (2 hours of my life that I'll never get back)
Suikoden 2 (Sadly, my disc freezes at the Mist Monster)
Star Ocean 2 (Lost interest after the earthquake incident)
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
When I bought it, I played it for a few hours and then lost interest because I couldn't use my dragon form as much as I wanted. A couple of years later, I restarted the game and finished the main story. Now (another couple of years later), I just have that fairy dungeon thingy left to do.

The thing is, that if they wouldn't care about what "we" want, they wouldn't be getting any money. Gamers are changing, and sadly, what we are seeing is a direct result of what the new generation of gamers wants to see. The modern gamer doesn't want to try too hard, think too much or wait too long. Modern games are a cake walk for a reason. Heck, I barely ever see any game over screens these days. Its not about weather you can beat the game or not, its about weather you stick around long enough to see the ending. As an experiment, I dare you to fire up your old consoles (if you still have one) and see how long you last in an oldschool game. I did, and I probably saw more Game Over screen in ten minutes than I had in a month of "modern gaming". The thing that kept running through my head was "how the heck did I beat this as a kid?". The reason is simple, modern games made me lazy, I expect a game to hold my hand now, tell me what buttons to press and when to press them. But what if I fail? No problem, I just take three steps back and go again. When I was a kid, games would be strict and unforgiving. There was no room to mess up because it meant starting over. Now that I'm an adult, games treat me like a child. I find that fairly ironic.
Well said sir! Well said! My sentiments exactly.

There have been attempts to make Indie Suikoden titles. In that regard, the game will never die. I actually feel that a properly organised team of fans, could actually do a better job than a team of professionals that don't really "feel" the game.
Exit Fate is a shining example of one of them. It's one of the best indie games out there. Anyway, this is terrible news indeed! If Suikoden does get a new team, I hope they're competent enough to capture the "essence" of the previous games.

I actually thought the screenshots weren't that bad...until I saw the trailer. Can anyone say DULL? Why in the world is there such a drastic drop off in the quality of the graphics? It looks like early PS2 graphics (which is bad considering this is a next gen game). The action was very bland and nothing really stuck out. They tried a little gimmick (Dante's hair turning all white for a few secs), but it felt forced and ultimately fell flat. Also, why would they make a DMC movie based off THIS game? It just doesn't make sense.

Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Which Final Fantasy Has The Best Story and Why?
|
on: April 26, 2011, 03:54:31 PM

If we're talking about story, meaning the why and the tone, the character journeys, I'd probably put 4 and 6 on the pedestal, with 13, 10, and 7 as the next tier.
FF4's story is relatively simple, being first about redemption of a tarnished soul, and then the attempt to bring about the redemption of others. And all of this is housed in a very simple fantasy setting, with many of the tropes of the genre. But I'd actually argue that no other FF game has such a strong undercurrent of meaning from start to finish. Final Fantasy IV is about saving your soul, and then saving the souls of others.
FF6, in my opinion, has the best PLOT of all the FF games. <Sorry, had to cut most of the content I'd originally posted here - I've found my next editorial!> At any rate, it doesn't have the true overall tone that some of the FF games had, but it had more characters, and more quality of storyline for each character, than many of the other games I've played. If you could even drag out the depth for these characters more, it would be even better - but what this game lacks in depth, it makes up for in breadth.
I still (firmly) believe that PS3-quality remakes of 4, 6, and 7, using the Crystal Tools engine, and slightly revised battle systems, would be among the greatest games ever built. I bet they'd sell well too.
This. (minus 13 in anything but the bottom tier) However, I don't have enough faith in Squeenix to make quality remakes of those classics. The way the company is now, they'd probably manage to turn those three into one big awesomely decorated hallway.
