Infinite Undiscovery is a dungeon crawler??? In any event, I think Infinite Undiscovery is yet another case of an early HD game that people don't like because they were expecting a next generation game not just in the graphics department. I liked it for what it was - a pretty straightforward JRPG with fun combat system.

Dungeon Crawler because I spent too much time in the dungeons.=P I only rented it a while back, so I probably don't remember much else. I think you're right in your assumption about people being disappointed that it's not something new and interesting, but even for what it is, Infinite Undiscovery was a game that bored the crap out of me, plain and simple.

I just remembered a few more least favorites that definitely deserve to be on the top of the list, and I assume I forgot them on purpose:

  • Final Fantasy (GBA/PSP) - As much as I love Final Fantasy for the NES, it hasn't aged well, yet I still found that its old-school quirks made it interesting to play even to this day. Take those out, however, and then you're left with a very basic RPG that's the very definition of generic. Combine that with a laughable lack of difficulty, and then you have an utterly pointless game, and it just doesn't get any worse than that without being utterly broken...actually, even a broken game can at least be played for laughs.=P
  • Infinite Undiscovery - It's just an utterly generic and tedious game, and few other games have ever felt like a greater waste of time. Not to mention it's the least addicting Dungeon Crawler I've ever played. Not much else to say, though. It's not so much bad as it is painfully generic.

Honorable Mention:

  • Most Western RPGs - I'm not really sure why, but I just find the whole genre unappealing outside of a few cases. I didn't want to list any because at the end of the day, I dislike them all for the same reason: They're just not my style.

Actually, that's all I got, since the other ones I was thinking of were eother tactical RPGs or were only bad once I got halfway through and screwed myself over.=P

I trillionth the PS2 recommendations, and I suggest getting a DS second.

Xenoblade has absolutely nothing to do with Xenogears or Xenosaga btw. Not even in the slightest. Not even as a spiritual successor. They just tacked on the name to attract fans of the series and because the director wanted to put "Xeno" on something.

what about the various musou warriors games by koei?

Those are action games with RPG elements.

ff3

I actually enjoyed FFIII a lot. Even more than FFIV which some people seem to worship.
With the exception of the story in which IV is miles better, I thought the gameplay to be really fun, switching jobs as you please is fun, the difficulty curve is better.

I think IV starts a lot better, a galaxy away, but near the end the options you have in III made it much more fun, enjoyable and customizable for me.

I love Final Fantasy III, but I didn't enjoy the DS version. The added story elements never really felt right, and the battles were made tediously long thanks to the animations. I didn't care for the job rebalancing, but only because I don't see why jobs in an RPG need to be balanced. You go through all that work to get those new jobs, they better be better than what you already got. It's still better than nothing for those who want the real deal, but I just preferred to play the NES version with a fan translation.

Easy solution: play The 4 Heroes of Light instead. It's like Final Fantasy III, but better in almost every aspect.

Now that's a solution I could get behind. Could, but I won't. I haven't played 4 Heroes of Light yet, so I don't know how it compares to either version of Final Fantasy III, and considering the fact that FF3 is one of my favorite FF games ever (and favorite NES game), I have too much nostalgia to make such a statement without having definititive proof of its quality.

Suprised it took someone so long to mention the SMT games on the DS.

Since we're discussing the 2 different systems (and I have both) which has the better version of Disgaea? PSP or DS? Touch control seems like a natural fit for the game, and the DS has the extra prinny mode, but I'm going to guess the PSP one is better looking and i'd be suprised if they managed to get all the voice acting on a DS card.

People always tell me that the PSP version is better because of the added VA and the cleaner look. I only played the DS version, but I never had a problem with it whatsoever, and the added content seems to make it worth the aesthetic sacrifices in my eyes.

I don't like the game after you SPOILER

Turn into stone
because after this it seems like you have no direction of where to go, even less than before. I came to a point where I was lost even with a faq. The last dungeon was one of the most boring I've seen in my life, because it's really complex, full with lever puzzles, different exits and to boost the encounter rate up to the sky. When you can finally think of how to do it, there's so much encounters you have to remember it all when it finally ends.

I promised to myself the the last (possible last) DQ I would be playing would be IX. If it's at least slightly fun and less grindy I'd give the series another shot. Actually, I've found them all (VIII & V) enjoyable until the middle.
Maybe I should do this, get Dragon Quest, play it until the middle and drop it.

I only played it for a couple of hours, so that's probably why I'm still fond of it. Even when DQ is good, it never can hold my attention for as long as other RPGs can. The only exception to this so far has been Dragon Warrior 1 for the NES, which is the only game that I stayed up for 24 hours playing. Not the whole 24 hours, mind you, I did have to go to the bathroom and eat, after all, and I did get bored a few times and started watching anime. Still, the only game that comes close is Lunar Knights which I played for then a record of 18 hours nonstop.

...I dunno why I did it, though. It was probably the most tedious game I've ever played. Still, it was nice to get through it, though even after 24 hours of play, I still only got to the final dungeon before I passed out, and since then I've never felt the urge to go back.
1193  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: LF jrpg on PS3 on: November 11, 2010, 03:55:29 PM
MickeyMakc ~ I felt the exact same way about it until I played it. It's far from unplayabe, in fact it probably wouldn't catch my hate except for the fact that you can ONLY save at save points and they are normally way too far apart. It's not the game's only flaw, but after playing for an hour one day and being unable to save before I had to take off was what finally broke it for me.

Danku ~ that's valid, but it never really started to bother me until I was about 60 hours in, which is pretty normal for the genre in my opinion. (Meaning it's where I hit the bordom wall in just about every good JRPG I've played.)

Side note: Lost Odyssey is awesome in a classic way. Totaly plays like a classic FF but with modern face melting (when it came out) graphics.

Save Points in general are a stupid idea in today's games, but I don't let it get to me anymore. What you described happens to me in virtually every RPG, and I know I had worse encounters at least twice in Final Fantasy X, and while it did slow me down, it didn't stop me from enjoying the game.

Also, what Danku described is what I've been hearing from a lot of people about Resonance of Fate. It's unique, but it is flawed and becomes repetitive and a chore. Not that I've played it, of course, and now I'm less inclined to do so. Those flaws are exactly why I quit playing Star Ocean: Till the End of Time and Infinite Undiscovery, oddly enough made by the same developer, except RoF sounds like it's even worse than it was in those games (do you seriously not learn new abilities?).

And Lost Odyssey's allusions to Final Fantasy are exactly why I couldn't get into it. It just felt like a FF clone with a poorly excecuted story with unbearably bad dialogue and more pacing and connectivity issues (at least at the beginning) than I've ever seen in any other game. I only played it once, but I could never get myself to play it again before I sold it.

Does anybody know how rare/valuable Suikoden III is? Because I have a copy in my GS online cart for $12 (first time I've seen it for less than $30)...but I'm only supposed to use my debit card for emergencies. I'm just wondering if it would be possible for me to find it again for such a good price later next year?

Buy that shit, now!

I'll see if I can get it delivered to the GS in the Capital and pay in cash.

On the other end of the scale, we have Magna Carta 2. Learn from my fail and stay away. I know it was reviewed as average, but it's not. It sucks.

...can I have your copy? Sorry, had to try. Ill-form as it may be, there's something about that greatly appeals to me. From what I've read, though, it'll probably end up like Lost Odyssey and Magical Starsign: an extremely generic and average game with poor writing that I never have the urge to play once I own it. I think I underestimate the importance of story and originality in games sometimes, since whenever I play a generic game, I never like it, even though it seemed like it would appeal to me on a base level.

Dragon Quest V is my favorite DQ game, after Dragon Warrior III. That's not saying much, and I still don't like it that much, but I thought it was enjoyable enough as it was. I actually liked that it was more story-focused. I hated the battle system, though.
1197  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: LF jrpg on PS3 on: November 10, 2010, 11:41:58 PM
I see just about everyone suggests Demon's Souls.  I want to like it, I really do.  Maybe "like" isn't the right word because I do like it.  I guess "enjoy" would be a better verb, I want to enjoy it.  One needs a HUGE amount of patience to play Demon's Souls. Not the grinding kind of patience, the repeating parts over and over and over again kind of patience. I've never had the patience for games that start you at the beginning when you die.  I'm trying to work on that lol but I can only play this bad boy for maybe 20min at a time.

Luckily I have that kind of patience, at least on a good day. Seriously, Demon's Souls is the biggest (and until recently, only) reason I want a PS3!

I'm looking forward to it, though I still need to purchase and play VC2.
On a side note, I'm just happy that more good games are coming out on a platform I already own, so VC3 on the PSP is good for me.
1200  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: LF jrpg on PS3 on: November 10, 2010, 03:35:51 AM
OK.. Neir got a very beautiful vocal soundtrack, how many rpg that you have play have tons of them?    Second, it also got a very emotional story.  Also, the game have 4 ending, first ending made you like a bigt damn hero while ending 2 made you look like the biggest dickhead in the universe, while keeping the story the same.   Graphic is a bit of meh but it got some epic boss fight.  What more do you want to know about Nier without spoiling it?

I think that should suffice for now.

On a side note, I'm sort of surprised no one mentions the combat, but from what I've seen, the combat doesn't appear to be noteworthy anyways. Personally that's what's been turning my off it, since gameplay is most important to me.
