16  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: What's the haps? on: February 24, 2014, 07:24:58 PM
I've been using the same HP laptop for five years now with no problems.  It's used practically everyday too...did I just get lucky?

Maybe.  My HP products have worked like butt. :(

I guess downloading The OC, Breaking Bad, The Office, Parks and Rec, Amerian Horror Story, and the complete series of Third Rock from the Sun at the same time didn't help.
As a long time HP user, let me go on record by saying:

DON'T BUY HP LAPTOPS.

Anything they make shits out its guts after one year, maybe two, tops. Their top-of-the-line ENVY series (one of which I own right now, an ENVY17-3000 back from 2012) was excellent ... until they started switching out the aluminum bodies for plastic ones, which ended up borking just as much as their normal priced laptops.

Chalk it up to the way the multiverse works, depending on which version you subscribe to. In your version, it works like this

First Agnes appears                                        Events of the game

World 1 --------------------------------|-----------------------------------------------------------|-----------------------------------------
World 2 --------------------------------|-----------------------------------------------------------|-----------------------------------------
World 3 --------------------------------|-----------------------------------------------------------|-----------------------------------------
World 4 --------------------------------|-----------------------------------------------------------|-----------------------------------------

And so on. But what if the worlds weren't totally separate but branched after the first Agnes appeared? The multiverse theory holds that a universe only branches when choices are made differently, so it could have been like this:

First Agnes appears                                        Events of the game

                                                                         __________________________|_______________________ World 2
                                                                        /
World 1 --------------------------------|----------------------------------------------------------|---------------------------------------
                                                                        \__________________________|_______________________World 3
                                                                                        \__________|_______________________World 4

And so on. By this theory the line of events in each world falls perfectly into place. Some may have branched before, and those ended up not being warned by Agnes and so were the first to be destroyed. Airy saved the worlds that WERE warned for last. It just so happens that the party's counterparts in the last few worlds were also dead (Meaning no more vestals to awaken the crystals) so Airy took her chances on Tiz's party despite the fact that they may have figured her out, because the alternative was to kill them and wait another few thousand years for the arising of a new vestal, which she obviously was unwilling to do.

I saw the rise of the crystal orthodoxy as just another political movement by man.

On Kickstarter: The producer seems to have said that he doesn't believe that Kickstarter is commercialy viable, especially in the eyes of Japanese game development studios.

The screen thing only happens if it's someone who's played the game, so yeah.

I've wanted to replay FFX for about a month now, but have refrained because I know how close the HD version is to being released. D: Torture.
Yeah, same here. Can't wait!

I heard the English voices for about 5 minutes and then immediately switched to Japanese. A) I can understand them and B) I find them so much mismatched. I don't think it's the fault of any one cast member, but I just really don't care for how everyone sounds together.
I can see what you mean about Tiz and Agnes' voices, I honestly like them more in Japanese. I'm torn on Ringabel, because his deep voice in Japanese is sufficiently exotic to them but it's just another 'gruff manly dude' over here, whereas his English voice suits his casanova personality. I really really hate Edea's Japanese voice though, it feels like my ears bleed out every time I listen.

Not to deter the conversation,
But Ringbel's voice sounds like the sort of divided treatment given to Tales of the Abyss' Tear.  Her japanese VA emphasizes her more caring personality while her english one hits more at her serious/militaristic background.

I'd probably dislike Tiz's voice more if his character was meant to have more personality.  He fells like the sort-of "I'm here" kinda character than the standout.
It's not the first time even in a Final Fantasy game either. Fran from FFXII had a really deep, husky Jessica Rabbot-esque voice in Japanese while she has a squeaky, otherworldly voice in English. It's one of those things you need to change for localization to get the same effect across.

Yeah it's all about experience. THe guy who did a horrible job as Reid in Tales of Eternia's localization ended up becoming... Sly Cooper, who was fucking classy as hell.

Ringabel is a cool guy. I think he should be main character. Fuck Tiz.

Man this SHiny Charm is wicked. First Pokemon I met after getting it was shiny.

Creepiness? So you're saying that hitting on girls during life or death discussions about evil empires annexing territories that may -- oh, I see your point now.
29  Media / Single-Player RPGs / RPGFan Pokémon Tournament on: February 05, 2014, 10:11:45 PM
So with the release of Pokémon Bank I'm going to hold a Pokémon Tournament for the RPGFan forums. I'd have a banner here but I suck at images.

So anyway, rules will be simple: no legendaries, double battles. Players are allowed six Pokémon with two for switch outs between matches (total of eight). Switches may only be used in between match-ups. Matches will be best two out of three. To keep things simple and the playing field level, Pokémon cannot have move tutor abilities from before Gen VI; if you bred a Pokémon (for example, a Hippowdon) in Gen VI that wasn't obtainable in X and Y, that's okay, but you can't have, say, a Hippowdon with Stealth Rock because that's clearly a Gen V transfer. To facilitate this, players should send photos of their eight chosen Pokémon to me via PM clearly displaying the blue Kalos pentagon on their status screen.

Winners will receive a prize based on placement, which is a choice of selecting Pokémon from the following list to be traded to them: Articuno, Moltres, Zapdos, Mewtwo, Mew, Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Celebi, Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Latias, Latios, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Deoxys, Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf, Dialga, Palkia, Heatran, Regigigas, Giratina, Cresselia, Phione, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus, Victini, Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, Tornadus, Thundurus, Reshiram, Zekrom, Landorus, Kyurem, Keldeo, Meloetta, and Genesect.

First place receives their choice of three Pokémon from the list.
Second place receives their choice of two Pokémon from the list not claimed by first place winner.
Third place receives their choice of one Pokémon from the list not claimed by first and second place winners.
Fourth place receives one of the following Pokémon: Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos.

Some of the Pokémon are shiny, to make it a surprise I'll remain silent on which ones.

Anyway, we'll see how much interest this gathers. Date will be set tentatively for Saturday, February 15, to give people time to breed/train. Happy battling.
