3421  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Final Fantasy IV remake for DS on: May 10, 2007, 10:48:57 AM
Then, like I said before, don't buy it. Some of us don't mind reliving old games in newer presentations.

There's a difference between releasing an original title and wanting it to be successful and releasing the same game four or five times. Squeenix is turning into Nintendo for god's sake.

You're basically saying you would prefer shitty origial titles over remakes that might actually be worth a damn. Besides that, if you're so against this you could... I don't know. Not buy it. What a novel idea.

This remake is a cash grab - and pointless.

Yes, as opposed to every other game's goal of losing money for the company that develops it. Games aren't meant to make money, no sir.

So for Japanese audiences we have a young innocent boy on an adventure, and for Western audiences we have the violent sociopath whose armor is stained by the blood of all those he's slain.

Subliminal messaging much, S-E...?

If it were the Friend's cast in Mario Kart, the powerups would be unfamiliar.  Mario has a large assortment of power ups that are pretty versatile.  I think the same is true for Zelda and Metroid, if not every videogame franchise.

Dude, what are you talking about? You got the barkelounger, you got Phoebe's guitar, you got the Chick and the Duck, you got Ross' dinosaur bones...

The assortment is infinite, I tell you. Infinite!

Okay, so I got ahold of the game.

The port job is fucking TERRIBLE. The sound is horrible; if you've ever played FFT on a PS emulator, you'll know what I mean because it sounds exactly the same. The orchestrated music is now 'one dimensional' so to speak; at any point there is only one musical note playing rendering the music completely horrid. The sound effects, which where awesome in the original, fucking suck now; in the original if an archer shot an arrow, there'd be a whizzing sound. In this, the whizzing has been replaced by a fucking BEEPING SOUND. Imagine this for pretty much every relevant sound in the game. It gets annoying as hell real fast.

And then there's the slowdown. You'll hear an attack execute, then one second later the attack will actually execute on screen.

Fuck you, S-E, for this horrible port job.

3428  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Best RPG based on writing quality, alone... on: May 05, 2007, 06:04:59 AM
CC was not theological by nature. The entire storyline was meant to explore complicated paradoxes within time and space. None of it was devoted to the human psyche or anything; most of the character's goals and personalities are clear and not very deep. What CC set out to do was throw these characters in the midst of a storyline that attempted to dissect the complex nature of parallel dimensions and timestreams. FATE, Motherbrain, harle, Kid, the dragons, etc. were ALL plot devices within this temporal anomaly.

CC had nothing to do with human nature. Its purpose was to explore potential complications and backlashes of messing with space and time, and in that respect it succeeded. If you think that CC's plot had anything to do with spiritual nature or philosophy, then you missed the point of the game's story completely.

Why, you might ask, did they bother standing their ground? The answer is rather simple; because without the proper technical know-how, this key is just a string of 16 letters and numbers. It's not like releasing a serial key for MS Office or some computer game. On top of that, the key is readily available to anyone with the time, knowledge and a HD-DVD drive with a HD-DVD. It's also arguable that this key is necessary for people to take full advantage of their fair-use rights for things such as this.

I could take that reasoning and apply it to mod chip sites. They're just supplying the mod chip, they're not telling people how to use it. People without the technical knowhow can't use it either. The problem is when you justify it like that you can pretty much justify anything.
3430  Media / Single-Player RPGs / A new Star Ocean? on: May 04, 2007, 12:00:00 PM
Sure it does. It stems from the DS innate design.

The reason ToT has a crappy battle system is because they attempted to make it into a 3D battlefield - pretty much exactly the same as SO's actually, with a few changes. The reason it was bad is because the DS's screen size was way too small to accomodate the real time battle system set on more or less a 3D field. The DS's screen is such that a side scrolling Tales game would work, but one with a 3D field would be absolutely horrid - and that's what happened with ToT, and what will happen with SO, considering that a field where you can move in more than two directions has been its main feature of battle system since its conception.

Also, in regards to Mark's ideas for battle flow: that would be HORRIBLE. If you do the whole character switching thing on the touch screen with battles on the top screen, all that would make for is a clunky interface where you have to either run around like a headless chicken while looking at the bottom screen and using your thumb to touch the corresponding character, or using the stylus and stopping dead in your tracks leaving yourself open to attack. Bad idea, and would make gameplay a terrible hassle. And gestures for different combos? In a game that's dependant on twitch reflex that would be insanely annoying and, again, clunky as hell. You'd attack, and then you'd take your eyes off the top screen while you attempt to perform the appropriate gestures on the bottom, again leaving yourself open for attack.

The DS's hardware design, along with my general distrust of tri-Ace's competency, makes me completely lacking in any faith that a SO game on the DS will be anything but a complete pile of horse shit. The DS is not a be all, end all system; there are games that'll work on it, and there are games that won't. Star Ocean belongs in the latter.

i fail to see how star oceans battle system would be suited tot he DS? please explain yourself or are you just being a fanboy?

also i thought heard on the irc chan that tri ace left square enix?

I can see the DS touch-screen control system being far more intuitive than push-button scenarios for any action-based battle system. For instance, character switching could be much more intuitive this way. Perhaps an overview of character positions on the bottom screen that allows you to quickly swap between them at a touch, etc. While clearly feasible with a controller, it'd take less time and be less hassle with direct input.

I can also see the inclusion of gestures for different parts of a combo, or even for different spells. Maybe instead of a single set of attacks per character, you could have branching sets, etc.

I'd be very interested to see how this sort of interface opens up the SO battle system.

SO would be crap on the DS. For proof turn to Tales of the Tempest, another real time action based RPG that was utterly ruined on the DS.

You sure are witty. I don't think I've ever seen anyone make references to sex and/or penises as a form of insult before. I mean the only thing that would've been even more original was if you threw in the word pussy or vagina in there. It must've strained every cell in your malformed brain to think up something as riveting and scintillating as that. Did you think of that all by yourself or did you get your mommy to help you? ;)
