3466  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Tales of the Abyss confirmed for U.S. on: May 04, 2006, 02:16:30 PM
Do you want me to give a general statement or on each game? If the latter I'll give some thoughts on each entry I've played and a cliff's notes score.

Tales of Phantasia SNES - I enjoyed it but only because I was new to the Tales series. 5/10
Tales of Phantasia GBA - Hated it
Tales of Phantasia PSX - Wish they had translated it. 7/10
Tales of Destiny - Liked it enough to play all the way through. 7/10
Tales of Eternia - This was where I really started liking the series. 8/10
Tales of Destiny 2 - The battle system was a little broken, and the story was complete shit, but it was a fun diversion. 7/10
Tales of Symphonia - I still say it's the best game on GameCube
Tales of Rebirth - An acquired taste, the battle system is kinda weird at the beginning but I loved the game. 9/10
Tales of Legendia - They went and took a step back, but it was still okay.
Tales of the Abyss - I used to consider Symphonia the pinnacle of the series, but you can see my review above.

As a general sense, I think you could consider me a fan of the series even though my scores for each game probably don't reflect that - I tend to ignore problems in the games if they're small, but I do have my limits (Phantasia GBA sucked all around and Legendia's battle mechanics and graphics were atrocious). I can say without exaggeration that Abyss is probably the pinnacle of the series; there's no downgrade from previous entries, and the battle system isn't some weird funky thing you have to get used to like Rebirth. Think of the battle system as similar to Symphonia's except much more refined.

The Grandia series went downhill after the first game.

Unintentionally funny

I just got to the Final Castle Defense in my Suikoden V NEw Game + file.

Code:
When Roy shouted "Where is your honor?!" and got killed by the hail of arrows, I just screamed, "ROY! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!"

One of the best and most heroic death scenes I've ever seen.

I don't want Richard anywhere near my sister.

Lym: Richard! Are you going out to see that tall man again?
Richard: Never you mind, your highness.
Lym: What DO you two do together anyway?
Richard: You don't need to know, your highness...

By the way, what the HELL is with Richard? Totally overpowered, I wish he was the one that
Code:
was involved in winning the Sacred Games, he would've totally kicked ass.

Code:
He WAS involved in the Sacred Games. In fact, the Godwins so feared the chance of him winning they made a little girl give him poison cookies (or candy, I forgot) that paralyzed his legs so that he'd lose to Childerich.

Oboro's investigation of him also had Belcoot saying that had he faced Richard, he would've lost. Richard was just that good.

Also, on the thing of missable characters: ALL the games had missable characters, and besides, if you missed 1 character you just screwed yourself out of the good endings and would've needed to replay ANYWAY.

And about the errand boy thing, do I even need to remind anyone of Suikoden 1's "Oh hey give this star ... report... thing to Leknaat." That was even more retarded than anything in this game.

Also, I have no clue why some people are saying the music sucks. I love the music. I think it's totally awesome.

Code:
Lastly, about the abandoning your castle thing, it makes sense in the short run anyway. Live to fight another day, or ... stay in the castle and DIE. Lucretia even explains it to you when she proposes the idea. It seemed quite logical to me.

Suikoden V

I saw this on TV on my international channel.

This is fucking disgusting. You have a young boy CRYING for help and the operator was all "I don't care, let me talk to your mom or you'll get in trouble." HIS MOM WAS FUCKING DYING HOW DO YOU TALK TO HER YOU STUPID BITCH.

Being fired would be too light a punishment for this whore.

I got the "OH GOD I ONLY GOT 107 STARS NOW SOMETHING FUCKED IS GONNA HAPPEN" ending in Suikoden V.

Code:
Lyon dying and the Prince holding up his hands with both the Twilight and Dawn Runes on them as tears run down his face beats everything for most heartbreaking scene. This game has a lot of :( story twists.

I have over 7 million potch and 30,000 Party SP, and an inventory full of awesome shit. Time to go through again and get all 108 stars.
