Either way, there are too many RPGs that combine elements of boring, clunky interface, cheap difficulty, lousy music, bad writing, and more into a crap-tastic game. One of the first that pops into my head is Dragon Quest 7. "Friendship is like a plant and must be returned to grow." God, that game did EVERYthing wrong. Not a single redeeming quality in that turd pile. I swear that RPG must have been made to intentionally piss off the gamer at every single turn. I don't recall ever being pissed off at DQ7. I played it for 100+ hours, but never beat it. I got bored. Alundra, now there's a game that pissed me off. This was before I had a computer so I couldn't look at FAQs to help me get past ridiculous puzzles.

I'm pretty sure GENIAL MEMBER OF ETHNIC GROUPS THAT ORIGINATE IN THE AFRICAN CONTINENT OR CLOSEBY THEREIN means black in another language.
Uh, I didn't realize RPGfan edited that word out. XD
I've seen that word before on other labels describing colors in other languages.

For me it's Tactics Ogre. You pretty much had to do everything perfectly, unless you didn't want an awesome party member dying that you couldn't get back. You eventually get a revive spell, but that's not until much later.
Also, DDS 1+2. DDS2 on hard can be ridiculous sometimes. The enemies will just get lucky with a critical hit, and then it's all down hill from there. What's bad about it, is that it's completely random and you can't really do anything about it. You just watch yourself die.

It's an upopular opinion, but Breath of Fire III,IV and V are three of my favorite RPGs. Especially IV. I liked how IV presented itself. The characters were awesome, the settings, the music, the battle system. The game was a little slow paced, but that's not really a problem. And I liked the two different story lines.
Vagrant Story is another favorite. Everything about that game was awesome.

Oblivion. It's by no means perfect but it's also by no means an infinitely large crap. Perhaps I'm drawn to it so much because of my D&D roots have instilled in me whenever I play a game I like to make a lot of the choices and be able to roam off the main story line whenever I please. Oblivion is the only game I've played where I've actually felt like I was in another world. I love that game. Maybe it's because I'm listening to the music right now.

@Dincrest: How did you play Innocent Sin? Do you know how to read Japanese?
Eternal Punishment is another one of my favorites. The first Wild Arms too. I got that game when I first got my PS1, I'll always have fond memories of it. I was never interested in the remake though. I don't know why. I think I just like the little sprites better.

I have to replay Secret of Mana: I'm mostly just afraid it hasn't aged that well. Don't let that stop you from playing a good game. I play my older RPGs all the time, and they're still just as good as I remember them. SoM, to me, has always looked good. Battling is fun, the music and atmosphere of the game always keeps me going. Also, if you play on an emulator you can get a 2player game going using Kaillera, I think it is.

It will always be Chrono Trigger.
I remember I rented it because the box looked cool. I made it to the fight with Magus before I had to return the game. I thought this was the end of the game. Around that time, I wasn't familiar with the term "RPG" and how long they typically were. I just thought it was another game and at the time Magus seemed like an end boss to me. When I beat him and the game didn't end, I was really shocked. And there was still tons of things left for me to do.
I ended up "losing" the game and never returned it to the store. I still have the free poster that came with the rental. There's a mistake on it too. It shows Marle casting Fire Sword on Crono.

I think this topic just gives people a reason to bitch. :P
Despite the change in art direction for the recent Castlevania games, they were still fun games. It looked good, so I wasn't complaining. If I want to play a game that looks like SOTN, then I'll play SOTN.

A Digital Devil Saga 2 question:If I set Mutual Karma on a character that's not in my party, will they gain the experience? Or does it have to be set on a character that is in my party in order for the characters not in to gain experience?

Darkrider:I'm so jealous. =/ I had Oblivion for like, three days. I played it the whole time I had it. I made it pretty far. I made an assassin Kahjit. I made it through all the assassins quests and was moving on to the Thieves Guild. Then my friend took the game back. So I was about to buy the game, then my brother sells the xbox 360. I was so sad.

5 hours into DDS2. I miss some of the old music, mainly the awesome boss battle themes. And I don't like the remixed theme in the mantra or large karma terminal too much, but they're not bad. Actually, the fact that the large karma terminal is like a computer room is kind of disappointing.
Other than that, it's awesome and I'm loving it. After I beat this, I'll go back to Devil Summoner, then finally Persona 2. Shin Megami Tensei overload!
