46  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Should I play Persona 1 on PS1 or PSP? on: September 13, 2013, 09:56:31 PM
Persona 1 was the only Persona game I liked.

Now there's an unpopular opinion.

I thought it was okay. I couldn't finish the PSP version because the encounter rate was ridiculously high. Not sure what they were thinking. Some of the remade soundtrack I enjoyed, but much of the atmosphere of the game was lost because of it.

For instance: they changed this eerily beautiful map theme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjefW3OV2ao

Into this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGaMV3xVhhI

I don't get it.

I still can't decide if I'm sold on this.

I like the series, but a remake of the first game - with a story mode - just seems so out of left field.

Don't forget about classic mode! It has the best of both worlds.

So, I've been playing the game for a couple days now and I wrote up a hands-on preview for you guys.

I'm super jealous that you're playing this right now. I can't wait to get my hands on it!

It helps to have Tetrakarn, or a physical mirror. Have plenty of buffs on hand like Rakukaja, Tarukaja, Sukukaja,Tarunda etc.(this is important) If you have a demon with Bomdi, that will help because the entire battle can be over if you get screwed by one of your demons exploding. I would dedicate Nemissa, or another demon to healing every round.

I remember it took me a while to beat this fight as well. Try raising levels if you're still having trouble, but basically set up physical reflect, then debuff and buff right away.

Yeah, I started pumping all my stats into magic and now my MC can destroy most enemies fairly easy, especially if he hits a weak point. I'm thinking of distributing evenly through the rest of the game so I can maintain some difficulty.

Let's not forget that this is coming out when Pokemon X and Y comes out. The target audience is definitely children. Kids will want to play Pokemon, their parents will buy them a 2DS to play it. At least, that's what Nintendo is hoping will happen with this.

I think they're trying to target younger gamers with this thing. It'll be an easier sell for parents if their kids want a handheld. I think Nintendo should have been putting their time into a redesign of the 3DS, but they must be really suffering from losses on the Wii-U, so they designed this?

Part of an actors performance hinges on a director.  A good director, like Nolan, can bring extra dimensions out of seemingly mediocre talent, as evidenced above by Anne Hathaway as Catwoman.  On the other hand, a director with a less skilled hand (i.e. George Lucas) can often bring out the worst in even the most skilled actors.  Natalie Portman is a kajillion times better than what she portrayed in Star Wars.  And even Hayden Christensen, yeah he wasn't very good in Star Wars but he was really good in other movies, like Shattered Glass.

Well, Nolan isn't directing this movie so don't get your hopes up.

Wait, the eShop money you get for registering SMTIV and Flaming Embers -- is that good for Wii games too or just DS ones?

3DS eshop only.

So am I correct in thinking it's best to build up the demon loyalty and fuse them as soon as possible?

I'm used to the "old fashioned" method of maxing them out before I fuse them but equipping demons one by one so you don't chew through Magnetite seems pretty slow.

You are correct. Everything about your demons is fixed this time around. They don't gain levels. Only maxing out loyalty is useful. I think maxing out loyalty allowed for more skills to transfer when fusing, but I have no proof of that, but I did notice that less skills were transferring, or none at all when I fused a demon without max loyalty.

Also, find out a demons personality and what skills they like to use and use that over and over again to max loyalty. If you get a Kind demon, have them block every turn to raise loyalty, or use buffs/heal. Sly demons like attack magic, and so on. It's pretty use to figure out once you get the hang of it. Some people found it annoying since sometimes don't match up with personality, but once you do max out their loyalty you can use whatever skills you want that they have.

I don't want to see videos of old characters! Where are Yukari and Junpei in action? But Yukiko looks like she could be a lot better now. I had so much trouble using her before. Definitely a character you need to lose a lot with first.

I knew it wasn't going to get the pre-orders. It's been out for so long and the DS isn't region locked, so a lot of people that wanted to play it probably already did.

I've been playing a bit of Soul Hackers tonight, and I'm really digging it.

It definitely feels like a late 90s Atlus game, and I'm okay with that.

The battle system doesn't feel that archaic, but having played old SMT games, I guess I'm used to it.

The only questions I have are about the magnetite.

Are there easy ways to raise it up?
What happens if you run out of it?
Does it stop dropping after a certain period in the game?

Magnetite will drop as long as you have demons active in your party, so it's often better to keep one or two active until you're coming up to boss fights. Easy ways to raise it up are to find really easy battles and auto them for magnetite. At some point in the game an optional dungeon opens up called the primate intelligence lab. It's full of large groups of easy enemies that will often give you drops of 1000 or more magnetite per win.

What the heck is Yukari wearing?

Her bio says "An active college model. She's also working as a Tokusatsu Super Hero actress, thanks to her pretty looks and gymnastic skills." so that explains why she's wearing that.
