1  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Record of Agarest Wars 2 LE.... and its coming out in the US... on: April 25, 2012, 04:26:57 AM
I feel like fans create a worse stigma for this stuff than the actually games, products or bonus material itself....
Very true. The fans just need to stop deluding themselves and trying to excuse themselves for shit like this and just tell it like it is. I like sex, and I like sexy women. If I get branded as a pervert because society deems me so, hey, I'm not about to lie about my preferences - if I'm a pervert, I'm a pervert. Given, my preferences do not lean towards anime characters that look like 6-year-olds, but that's what happens. I can even understand the rationale behind "just because I look at anime drawings of little girls, doesn't mean I'm a real life pedophile." No, but it sure as hell makes you a fictional pedophile. I've had some asshole call me a 'prude' because of it; seriously, I'm far and away the last thing to come into anyone's mind when they think 'prude.' It'd be hilarious if it weren't so pathetic.

The problem isn't about liking sex or sexy women, on the contrary; enjoying sex is very healthy and is just human nature. There should be no moral panic over the outright depiction of sex in media. The problem with these types of games though and the whole Moe/Otaku subculture of Japan is the fact that its misogynistic and objectifies women to the point where they're nothing but sex slaves destined to serve any and every man. Now I understand that this is a cultural thing, but before anyone calls me out on being racist hear me out. Yes, it's a wide known fact that for centuries Japan and all of Asia really has been extremely patriarchal and misogynistic, but that doesn't make it right and it doesn't mean we have to condone it simply because of "cultural differences."

In the Middle East, they're still forcing women to cover themselves up and be ashamed of their bodies, and if a woman isn't a virgin or cheats on her husband then she can get stoned! Should we leave that alone because "its a different culture?" No we shouldn't! Whenever there's outright oppression of a group based on who and what they are we have to stand against it and try to change it for the better.

Now granted, Japan is ahead of the West in numerous other areas but women's rights is not one of them, they've actually always been behind in the West on that front. It's slowly changing, but the whole Moe/Lolicon craze is a manifestation of the centuries old, deep rooted sexism that is still very much prevalent in Japan and all of Asia. Hell, Asia is the leading continent in little girl prostitution and sex trafficking! In India and China, girls as young as 9 are being sold off as brides with no choice in the matter, as if they're nothing but a piece of property! With these sorts of things going on, suddenly the whole Otaku subculture doesn't seem so "harmless" anymore.

This is why its so creepy to us Westerners, because; say what you will about us but we've come a long way on women's rights issues and have generally always been very forward thinking on that, and quite frankly that's the right way to be! I think probably the best way to let Japan and all of the Eastern world know that we're not happy about their depiction of women is to boycott sexist products like this. Maybe that'll get them to finally wake up and realize that their backwards views on women may have been okay in the 12th century, but it doesn't fly in the 21st century!

The Tales series is awesome, probably my 3rd favorite RPG series (Right after Grandia and Lunar of course)

I've played all of the English released Tales games (Never imported the Japan only ones, won't struggle to translate my way through a game just for the sake of playing the game, it'll just suck all the fun out of it which is the point of video games.) And I'd have to say my favorite one would have to be Abyss. In fact it's my 5th favorite RPG of all time!! The storyline I felt was really deep and original, I loved the theme of that game and all the characters were really developed and had their own arc dedicated to them. Overall I feel it's been the best Tales game released stateside and may even be the best in the series.

My first Tales game though surprisingly was both Eternia and Symphonia. Confused you ask? Well I first discovered Tales games through Tales Of Eternia which I saw at all my local game stores when I was a kid, but unfortunately my mom forbid me from playing it until I got to age 12 or 13 (I was like 9 or 10 and yeah my parents were and *are* still very strict on game ratings lol)

Anyways, by the time I turned 12 I got both Eternia and Symphonia which had just come out and played both of them. So yeah, they both introduced me to the series. Though technically I would say Eternia was my first Tales game because it's what got me familiar with Tales and I found it to be very similiar to Star Ocean 2(Which I loved) so I started associating Tales with Star Ocean lol.
4  Media / Single-Player RPGs / The End of JRPGs on: March 18, 2011, 02:52:06 AM
Well looks like that's it. Final Fantasy, Tales Of, Dragon Quest, Grandia, Lunar, and all the many other wonderful JRPGs out there it was nice knowing you.

What with the whole disaster happening in Japan, and Japan getting practically destroyed, looks like this site will be cut in half, and now we'll have to rely on WRPGs from now on.

How does everyone feel about this, that the JRPG market we all knew and love has been completely annihilated.

Still doesn't give people the right to mock a perfectly good game :/ Especially when they KNOW it's good.

So much hyperbole for this overrated video games.

What do you mean 0.0 what's hyperbole mean, sorry to sound like a noob^^;

Hyperbole is a fancy synonym for exaggeration.

Ahh I see, still don't get what that previous poster was trying to say though^^;

Anyways, yeah I can't stand that it's cool to hate FFVII attitude going on, the game was not the best but it was a genuinely good game with alot of interesting concepts explored pretty well.

I'm not being sarcastic about that lol.  There were articles in magazines and people on GameFAQ's back when this was coming out stating that LoD is the FFVII killer, it made no sense then and makes no sense today.

Umm I didn't mean LoD I meant the person that said FFVII is the worst RPG ever, and I truly hope he/she was being sarcastic because this whole "it's cool to hate on FFVII since it's what started the FF series becoming mainstream!!11" is just plain retarded. Anyone with half a brain whose played the game could see that while FFVII isn't the BEST GAME EVAR!!!! It sure isn't a bad one, and farrr from the WORST ONE EVAR too. It's a pretty good game, not bad at all, but not SUPER SPESHUL AMAZING.

So haters please stop hating on it just to be cool.

Now FFXII on the other hand....

List in your opinion the Worst RPGs, they can be based on personal dislike, or just bad mechanics in general. Here are mine.

FF XII: Oh dear god, this game ruined the Final Fantasy series just ruined it, shame too because the graphics are spectacular and I liked the Sky Pirate feel, if only they went with that more. This game really ruined the FF tradition by getting rid of story and character development, which has been a long time staple of the series starting with IV. Also I personally blame this game for making FFXIII So linear and without towns. Square probably went the opposite direction with XIII because of how badly XII did.

Unlimited Saga: Have never played this and don't plan to from what I've heard. WTF, a board game?! What the hell were they thinking?? Board games don't belong in my RPG, kthanxbai

Lunar Dragon Song: No.....Just no.....How dare you tarnish the Lunar name!!!!

Hell I'm even tempted to put Grandia III up on this list but I won't because it was actually a decent game overall, it just didn't live up to my expectations like the first two games did, aka it never came close to their greatness. (Though it was pretty cool in the beginning.)
13  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ar tonelico 3 coming to the PS3 January 2010 on: February 28, 2011, 06:53:08 PM
I don't know why everyone is getting all up and arms about this sexual thing in Ar Tonelico, it never bothered me and I'm a girl compared to most of you guys!!

Anyways I'm really looking forward to this game, I loved the 2nd Ar Tonelico and the first one is pretty good too (Haven't finished it yet though.)

Add that to a changed battle system which resembles the Tales Of series which I love and sign me up for this game!!

All this hate on the series seems to be really unjustified and really I think the Ar Tonelico series is one of the best traditional RPG series that has come out this generation, it really has a certain charm and old-school feel, and that's why I like it, not because of the fanservice.

All this comes down to really is well...HATERS GONNA HATE

and the Breath Of Fire GBA ports, bleh.

Doesn't count, those sucked on the SNES too.
Ha-Ha I wouldn't know I haven't played the SNES ones but I've heard that they're much better than the GBA ports except for 2's horrible translation....

Speaking of bad handheld ports, Tales Of Phantasia also is pretty awful. Goddamn we really got the lame-ass version of that game, I wanted the PS1 version dammit!!!! (Or PSP)
15  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky on: February 28, 2011, 06:29:58 PM
I'm actually genuinely looking forward to this game. :) While it's not a pee my pants release like Ar Tonelico 3 or Tales Of Graces F is for me, I actually still quite like the Legend Of Heroes series. It's a nice little old-school style series and is one of the better handheld RPGs, and even traditional RPGs in general that have been released.

Seeing that this game is also the first in a huge sub-trilogy in Japan makes me even more excited, can't wait to see what's it's like.
