16  Media / The Soundroom / Angèle Dubeau et la Pietà - Game music on: November 21, 2012, 09:38:50 PM
So, Angèle Dubeau, which is one of the greatest violonists in Quebec, just released a disc on which she plays music from various video games. Of specific interest here would be the Final Fantasy, Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger/Cross medleys. The disc is really great, so I wanted to share it with you guys! :)

The Chrono medley is available on Youtube (by the disc publisher, so this is legit): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcJj19YIgY0

And well, if you enjoy it, go ahead and buy the disc, it's not very expensive anyway  (around 15$) :)

Looking at the description for Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward on amazon.ca (http://www.amazon.ca/Zero-Escape-Virtues-Last-Reward/dp/B007FMSDU0/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1350868711&sr=1-1), I discovered the game seems to contain Ys Seven as a hidden bonus...
18  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Collector's Edition of Journey (with Flower, Flow) for PS3 coming on: September 13, 2012, 06:51:36 PM
Actually, you can't play the games on the disc itself, the disc only contains the "installs" so that you can install it on the PS3 and then play, as regular PSN titles. The only restriction is that the disc must be in the PS3 for them to work... So it's basically the same, as you install the three games separately and you have three different sets of trophies, so you're probably better off keeping the PSN version since you won't need the disc to play them. (It was a big let down honestly, I waited for this release to be able to play those games on disc since my HDD's full and I didn't want to buy them on the PSN so I wouldn't need as much space to install them... oh well, at least I enjoyed the games)

Well, thanks for the info! I guess I'll stay away from those then. I'm more of a "short but intense" than "long but generic" kind of person, so I don't think I'll enjoy those then.

Hi!

I was looking for some RPGs to play on my Android, and I realized there were a couple that were released by Kemco... They all seemed like 16-bit era classic RPGs, although I hadn't really heard of them before. Plus, some of them are compatible with the XPeria Play so it's even better! I was wondering if some of you tried any of those games and could tell me if they are worth the purchase or not?

Here's a link to the apps, to illustrate the games I'm talking about:

21  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: What game related stuff do you collect? on: July 18, 2012, 05:16:55 PM
I do have a couple artbooks and soundtracks, but only of games I care about, so I wouldn't call it a collection...

For me a "real" collection is when you start buying stuff you don't really care about just to complete it: I do have a couple of shitty RPGs for the DS since my goal is to get every one published on the system, so that's pretty much the only thing I would actually call a collection.

Of course nowadays you get a little something for every pre-orders so I do have a box full of various pre-order junk: stickers, cards, pens and stuff...

So, my friend just game me a bunch of mangas, just like that. So now I have  21 Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, 11 Death Note, 6 Brave Story, 3 NORA and the first Tales of Symphonia. So, since I don't know anything about those, I really don't know where to start! If anyone has suggestions, please let me know!

As for Nintendo's new console - never alone? Always online? Intrusive texts from people popping on screen *as* you're playing the game?

Burn that shit with fire.

That really depends on two things: is online outright necessary, and can I disable or filter that stuff? I'm actually excited about the idea of having ONLY friend comments there, but if I can't filter it to that or disable entirely I'll be pissed.

That was the problem with the Wii IMO... Motion controls are fun, for a while. The problem was that you couldnt desable them/use an alternate control scheme. I didn't finish any of the two Zeldas because I got sick of the controls, but it wouldn't have been a problem if I could have played them with the classic pro controller, for instance...

So I entirely agree with you: if it's optional, it's awesome, and I'll probably use it sometimes. If it isn't, well... I'll really hesitate about buying one.

My other wish is that your purchases will actually be link to an actual account, not a console... They talked about Nintendo Network but didn't get into the details yet... Honestly I'm interested by the downloadable classics on the Wii store, but I really don't like the idea of potentially losing my games if something happens to my console or something... I also hope they'll do a bit like they did with the 3DS, where you could transfer your DSi games to it, and you'll be able to transfer games from Wii to WiiU...

I was browsing on Amazon when I saw that pre-orders were open for both 3DS and PSP! Apparently the title "Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward" seems official and the announced realease date is October 23th!

I love pokemon games, but this game just doesn't look appealing to me at all.

Contrary here! :P I'm a fan of Koei's games, but I'm really not sure about this one :P I mean, I like those games for their epic feel: great battles, historical settings, awesome character design (most of the time anyway)... But with Pokemon in it? For me it's a contradiction :P

Anyway, I might be taking it just for the sake of having a new DS game, while I wait for Kingdom Hearts/Paper Mario to come out on the 3DS... As far as I know there hasn't been anything interesting since Devil Survivor 2...

I grabbed the game this afternoon and I've been playing for 5 hours now.  This one is a Godsend for us RPGFans.  I haven't been this into a JRPG in a very long time.  Everything is spot on so far.

I'd even go as far as to say it's the first time at that much into an RPG... ever! I've spent 16 hours in two days and a half... For me, I think this is a record (I rarely play more than 1-2 hours a day usually). It's definitely one of the most enjoyable games I've played in my whole life! It's ridiculous to think that NoA originally wanted to keep us from playing this!

Have you seen Mass Effect's cartoon trailer yet? Can't wait to see the first episode! I like how it feels just like the game!
28  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: GBA and DS guidance needed, absolutely no experience with these handhelds... on: March 10, 2012, 03:24:03 PM
Mondo-thanks for all the great suggestions guys! I think I have drafted up a fair list of titles to start with... I just still can't decide the model to get.... These XL's seem to be the way to go though.... maybe I'll just grab one of them and GBA seperate....

Have you considered a 3DS? It's slightly more expensive than a DSi XL, but you'll be able to play 3DS games as well. It'll save you some money in the long run. The eShop is starting to look pretty decent too.

It doesn't support GBA games, but if you really want to play those, GBA SPs are very cheap nowadays. You should be able to buy one for less than $30.

Actually..... no I didn't..... I was thinking all about screens and being cost effective..... ok throw 3ds into the equation as an option as well..... oppinions?

Honestly, I have a 3DS but I continue to use my DS Lite to play DS games. I don't like how the 3DS emulates the DS; because the resolution of the screen is different, the pixels are blurry and the games just don't look as good as when you play it on an original DS. If you ever played a SNES on an HDTV, you'll probably understand what I want to say, the image isn't as clear as when you play it on an old TV. Of course, you can press both start and select while the game loads to play with the original resolution, but then the screen just get so small that it's hard to see. It's my opinion anyway, maybe you don't care about that kind of thing but I thought I'd let you know! Although the emulation of GBA games on the DS Lite is just perfect, but you have the same kind of problem if you use the GameBoy Player to play them on a Gamecube.
So my advice would be: you should start with a DS Lite, as it plays GBA games well, and you'll be able to enjoy DS games in their original splendor! Hope it helps!

If you like old-school (NES era actually), you should probably check Retro Game Challenge for the Nintendo DS. There are a few NES-inspired games, including a Dragon Warrior-inspired RPG.

They have already been cited, but both the Mario & Luigi and Golden Sun series are great RPGs that are colorful and don't take themselves too seriously, that have entries on both the GBA and DS (Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story is one of my favorite titles overall for the DS).

And I agree with Bytor: Magical Starsign and Avalon Code are also great titles, again colouful and not too serious (especially Magical Starsign actually).

Also, as you stated you liked Suikoden, you should probably take a look a Tierkreis on DS... I know it's a bit controversial among fans of the series, but I personally enjoyed it.

It's hard for me to escape smoke-smell myself, my dad is worse than a goddamn chimney in Winter.  So I'm happy I got no complaints, sorry if there was a scent.  Esentially only a few zones of my house are smoke-free...my room and my study. =/

There was a minor smell, but it wasn't big enough for me to complain about.  It will fade with time.

Same, it was too small to really be disturbing. Plus, the books are so awesome that it only took a few seconds to stop thinking about it :P But yeah, seriously, it was barely noticeable.
