Currently own Annie and Ayesha. I'm going to be more mindful of going in continuity order when I get around to the Arland stuff.

Never knew Mana Khemia was part of this series though. Those games always looked intriguing but I saw those around the time I was about done with my PS2 and moving on to the next generation.

I loved having shortcuts. But Xenoblade Chronicles kind of spoiled me with those a bit.

Thank you! All I've ever known is the

style and have spent the past three years on this site being all spoiler dodgy!

I LOVED that jazz! XD And just seeing the way the skyline looked in that city was such a "holy crap!" moment. You have this big world full of fantasy settings, and then you reach that city and it's like strolling through a Tales-version of San Francisco. That was awesome.

The shift in atmosphere was pulled off great, I just wish everything involving that part of the game had been as long as the first map. It really did feel rushed when it's just a city, two roads and two dungeons, one of which was optional.

(Also I can't figure out how to do spoiler tags for this particular style of message board, so I apologize. I'm trying to be vague as possible!)

Good to know. Thanks! :)

Well, I have no experience with the series beyond that single DS purchase. My assumption from the titles was that each game was standalone as long as the titles didn't share a name or place, so I just bought the cheapest installment Amazon had, which was Ayesha. If there's a continuing story or overall world continuity to the series, then should I play another game in the series first?

In a bizarre coincidence, I actually bought Ayesha off of Amazon earlier today. o_O

The only one I own is the DS one. Annie? Never cracked it open. Been meaning to someday as I clear my backlog.

Beat Xillia tonight. I loved the big twists, though I must say the second "half" of the game felt a bit rushed, as I expected a bit more to explore in the new area. That and the solution to the major problem seemed to come out of nowhere really fast. Not sure how I felt about the identity of the final boss. It's kind of the same situation as Vesperia where you weren't really fighting the person who had been the main antagonistic force in the game. But still a really enjoyable experience. Looking forward to Xillia 2. In the meantime, I started this right after Graces, and I'm a bit burnt out on this series for now.

I agree, Dice, wholeheartedly. Jude's just kind of there... mostly because he's just crushing on Milla, though I suspect (hope) he'll find his own reason to fight before long. Milla's kind of humorless barring some skits, and really bland on the whole, and Elize and Teepo are just... eh. I dunno. I know Teepo's supposed to be funny and Elize is supposed to be "awwww, look at the shy little girl character", but they aren't really doing it for me. Rowen is pretty neat though. I actually like seeing a character this old as a party member.

Leia... she gave me shades of Natalia when she hopped on. Sixth character who kind of sneaks into the group, is a childhood friend of the hero with a crush, is kind of out of place compared to the rest of the group. I'm still not sure how I feel about Leia. Out of place is really the only way I can describe her right now.

Also, that freaking mine in Leronde is broken. I mean the side one with the Devils Arms monster in it. I managed to grind twenty levels in that place and even beat that boss. Now I'm steamrolling everything. XD

I also love the lilium orb system far more than the title skill system from Graces, and the shop upgrade system is addicting as fuck. I'd say so far I'm loving everything about this game more than the previous installments except for the story.

I'm almost to the end of chapter 2 of Xillia, myself. Trying to get as many sidequests done as I can before I end the chapter. While the cast is growing on me, I have felt like this is the weakest group of characters in any of the games I've played. I dunno... none of them really seem to be standing out so far. I do like what they're doing with Alvin, though. I thought he was going to be the weakest one, yet the way they're handling his arc is really interesting.
11  Media / The Soundroom / Re: Random VGM on: March 17, 2014, 01:13:49 PM
I've actually been hearing people complain about the "sameyness" of Tales Of soundtracks since Abyss. That was the second Tales games I played with him as the composer, and while I do enjoy most of the soundtrack, a few of those tunes did sound like Symphonia tracks with slight note changes here and there. ^_^; I noticed it even more with Vesperia, and I can't even remember what I've heard from Graces and Xillia because at this point, it's all just kind of blurring together music-wise.

There have been a few times I've held down the L trigger in battle, expecting to run around as I please. Battling the old way is going to take some reconditioning. At least until I can get to DotNW.

You still don't think it warrants a playthrough though?

I suppose if someone really wants to experience every game in the series. I just think there are so many better games in the series to spend one's time on. The negatives really weighed it down for me to the point that I would say just skip it.

Oh, for sure I agree with the soundtrack and the characters, Dice and Elegance. My problem with Legendia mostly comes from the main (first?) plot sort of falling apart near the end, the battle system being awful, the random encounters, the horrible dungeon design, and the second half of the game having no voice acting whatsoever. It's like for everything Legendia did right, it did something wrong as well.

But as said before, *most* of the characters are great (I enjoy Jay and Moses' bickering), the soundtrack is arguably the best in the series, the characters get a crapton of development, and the world itself is a really cool concept. The island is a ship, that's awesome! I've actually kind of always wanted a sequel that took place in the mainland, as I was always curious as to what the rest of the Legendia world was like.

Bytor, I wouldn't even bother with Legendia. That game felt like such wasted potential it isn't even funny.

It'll be interesting to see how Symphonia holds up. That was my first Tales game, before I knew the series cliches, and it just holds a special place in my video game heart. I also think I like DotNW more than a few of the people here. I'll agree that it doesn't hold a candle to the first game, and Emil can be reaaaallly annoying early on, but I dig it.
