61  Media / The Soundroom / Re: Random VGM on: March 17, 2014, 01:13:49 PM
I've actually been hearing people complain about the "sameyness" of Tales Of soundtracks since Abyss. That was the second Tales games I played with him as the composer, and while I do enjoy most of the soundtrack, a few of those tunes did sound like Symphonia tracks with slight note changes here and there. ^_^; I noticed it even more with Vesperia, and I can't even remember what I've heard from Graces and Xillia because at this point, it's all just kind of blurring together music-wise.

There have been a few times I've held down the L trigger in battle, expecting to run around as I please. Battling the old way is going to take some reconditioning. At least until I can get to DotNW.

You still don't think it warrants a playthrough though?

I suppose if someone really wants to experience every game in the series. I just think there are so many better games in the series to spend one's time on. The negatives really weighed it down for me to the point that I would say just skip it.

Oh, for sure I agree with the soundtrack and the characters, Dice and Elegance. My problem with Legendia mostly comes from the main (first?) plot sort of falling apart near the end, the battle system being awful, the random encounters, the horrible dungeon design, and the second half of the game having no voice acting whatsoever. It's like for everything Legendia did right, it did something wrong as well.

But as said before, *most* of the characters are great (I enjoy Jay and Moses' bickering), the soundtrack is arguably the best in the series, the characters get a crapton of development, and the world itself is a really cool concept. The island is a ship, that's awesome! I've actually kind of always wanted a sequel that took place in the mainland, as I was always curious as to what the rest of the Legendia world was like.

Bytor, I wouldn't even bother with Legendia. That game felt like such wasted potential it isn't even funny.

It'll be interesting to see how Symphonia holds up. That was my first Tales game, before I knew the series cliches, and it just holds a special place in my video game heart. I also think I like DotNW more than a few of the people here. I'll agree that it doesn't hold a candle to the first game, and Emil can be reaaaallly annoying early on, but I dig it.

I just got the CE in the mail. This thing is fan-freaking-tastic! I didn't expect so much swag. I thought it was just going to be an artbook, soundtrack, and figures. But the steelbook, the little novel, and the soundtrack being four discs. Incredible.

You know, it's weird, but I got ToS2's perfect ending by complete accident. I thought the game ended on a really nice note, and then I went online and read that there were bad endings, I was genuinely shocked. And then I read what the requirements were, and thought it was stupid. Even if I got the best result, I could have easily messed those parts of the game up without even thinking about it.

Thanks. I'll have to mess around to look for it, I guess.

EDIT: Yep, that was definitely the problem. Odd though, I don't recall ever using or even knowing about that option the first playthrough, and it seemed to be manual by default then. Wonder why it switched now.

So I don't know if this is a glitch, but it's starting to piss me off. I'm doing my second run of Graces, and everyone's titles keep changing. I've tried to change Asbel's five times now, but every so often it'll just change back to Nimble Fang Adept. It's enraging me. Richard's just changed back to his first title for no reason too. Am I missing something here?

I played about an hour of Xillia a few nights ago. The town you start in looks gorgeous, and that you can actually change the camera angle as you walk around it is pretty cool. The only thing that kind of made me raise an eye is the character models. They don't quite look like the way they're drawn in the official art (they don't look as... anime? I dunno.) and every time Jude talks, he looks like a soulless mannequin with the way his mouth moves. And yeah, I picked Jude. Milla's severe love of the letter S in the intro cutscene was enough to drive me away. XD

So, back to Graces for the moment. I'm going to enjoy my 10x experience, darn it.

And I don't care. It's still stupid. #3#

I'm in the very definitely final dungeon of Tales Of Graces F a few months after starting the game. I'd say overall, good game. A nice plot, fun cast (I actually liked all the party members this time). I also liked how the title/skill system works in this too. I think that, barring Lineage And Legacies, this may be the second shortest Tales game I've ever played, behind Symphonia's sequel. I think by the time I reached the Ghardia Shaft, I was about 30 hours in. As for what I didn't like, well, the game felt extremely linear most of the time, barring you from certain areas and kind of forcing you along to the next plot point. And the actual battle system. That CC meter is kryptonite. A single attack? Costs CC. Sidestepping and dodging? Costs CC. Running freely? That thing you could do since Abyss? Costs CC. And then you run out and all you can do is guard or walk feebly until it refills enough to do anything substantial. Blargh. Give me back my MP meter any day.

And you know what really, really irks me? I decided that for my NG+ run, I'd do it in different costumes. But all the good costumes are DLC and they're... $3.99 each? What are you smoking, Namco? I'd pay $3.99 for all the costumes together, at the very least, but for each one? Screw yourselves. (And yes, I know I'm late to the party complaining about this. :p)

Welp, time to finish up the final stuff, and finally move on to Xillia.

When I was a teen, I'd play Tales Of Symphonia, Legendia, Abyss, and Vesperia in almost 10 hour spurts, all day. Same with a lot of games back then, honestly. I can't imagine doing that today without burning out on an RPG super fast. I've been playing Graces over the past two months, and I've played maybe an hour or two every day or every other day, and I've really been enjoying playing it that way. I get headaches and general nauseousness if I play a game for over three hours straight now, it seems.

I wasn't feeling Xenoblade either.  It's when you get a bit higher you get thrown about 20 plot twists and the game gets interesting and only better.  It just sucks with a game so big you gotta work for it.  Now I'm totally hooked (see some of my massive posts at the Game Jurnal).

Last Story is a game I *reaaallly* wanted to like but it never took.  I feel like everything was right EXCEPT its ability to achieve that "hook".  The characters are cool yet somewhat "disconnected", the town is 'nice' yet bland, the gameplay is interesting but clunky and complicated.  I wanna give it another go...but...TIME.  NONE.

I've actually gone out of my way to avoid Xenoblade spoilers because I've heard about the large amount of plot twists. I really want to get to those. One massive, massive one was spoiled for me though, and that did ruin it for me a bit. Like I said though, I loved everything else. I think I spent hours just wandering the Bionis' Leg area (along with the first colony area). It's beautiful.

I don't think I felt anything was right about TLS, but I still get where your coming from. You have all these great credentials for the creators, all this hype, all the pre-release stuff looked great, it had a kickass special edition... and then I popped the disc in. You do the first area, fight that boss in the temple (where I learned almost instantly that there was a bit too much going on in the battle system for me to like it. I spent half the fight sitting in back first-person shooting the thing.) And then you get to the town and... it's boring. The town looks bland, the characters are bland, the story draaaaaaaags, and then you meet "obviously the princess" girl, she's cliche as hell... and that's where I stopped. I just couldn't take any more at that point.

Then I looked at my unopened copy of Solatorobo, and realized the only reason I was even buying XSeed games was to support the further release of Trails In The Sky games, which at the time seemed like it wasn't going to happen. I just decided not to buy any more by them unless I was genuinely interested. What a sad day that was. XD

While I did love Xenoblade at first, I played it like, once a month. I stopped right at the Colony 6 part with the mine entrance because I was a bit burnt out at that point. Love the battle system (even if I have no dea what I'm doing most of the time), love the sidequest system, love the big, sprawling environments, but at that point I just realized that I didn't really give a crap about Shulk or Reyn or any of what was going on. Still plan on getting back into it some day, but it'll probably be another month or so.

The Last Story though. After all the hype, I'm a bit sad I never warmed up to it. I played it for about five hours before I finally called it quits. Didn't like the battle system, couldn't care less for any of those characters. I couldn't remember who was who half the time, except for alcoholic girl. It's a bit funny, I started Xenoblade right after that and my immediate thought starting it up was "Oh god, everything looks the same and the voice cast sounds exactly the same! It's the same thing!" Thankfully it wasn't. :p
