I've got some stuff from online friends coming in, but I don't know what it is yet.  I'm pretty satisfied with the current haul. :)

And if so, why do I have a feeling it'll be abruptly ended by skeet shooting?

Hilarious mental image, but I think that the skeet shooting will be reserved for government drones. ;)

Also, check the pics thread, it has something related to this very topic in it.

My dad is a member of the Children's Panel in the UK.  They make decisions regarding abused and/or troubled children, so he sees horror stories beyond imagining nearly every week. Since he is in contact with the kids who get abused, news like this just breaks him.

Let me just say that I'm very impressed by his work.  He has to be extremely strong to engage with that kind of thing on a regular basis.

Based on this, China says "WE'RE TRYING, DAMN IT!"

http://www.livingcube-furniture.com/

This basically takes 10 pieces of major types of shelving and other types of furniture into a single one piece that's probably good for everyone in at least one place they'll live in.

EDIT

The Living Cube seems cool.  (Too bad it's so fucking expensive.  The average apartment dweller who would benefit most from it won't be able to afford it.)  Also, The Doors!

and lol at the gif.

Since we seem to be focused on the shutdown, a friend of mine on Facebook posted an excellent quote on the subject:

“Think about the precedent. What’s next? What if the Democratic extreme said, ‘Well we’re not going to sign a budget unless you do away with assault weapons?’ What if we’re not going to have a budget unless 20 people around here decide that everybody under the age of 40 should wear a tin hat around? This is not the way you govern a great country.”
