I sold my Kindle Touch and it left me with just enough spare cash to buy a Kindle Paperwhite...and there is a Walking Dead marathon on.  Today is a good day.

How's  the refresh rate on that paperwhite? I was checking out a demo unit at best buy and it seemed like it took a while to turn pages

I don't have it in yet, so I'll have to tell you when it arrives.  That said, the Touch has a good pretty refresh rate and I doubt they've gone backwards on that.

258  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Ex-Cop Begins Killing Family Members of Officers, Claims it's for a Greater Good on: February 09, 2013, 04:25:54 PM
I wonder if the police would have searched 400 houses in a week (some without a warrant, I am certain) if they were after a suspect that had posted a killing list that didn't include any cops...for some reason I have doubts.

To be honest I have some semi-founded doubts about how well 'trained' any particular police officer may be at any given moment/location. My old man has worked in the prison system for well over a decade, I forget his exact rank but I know he pretty much sits somewhere high up on the food chain. Anyway he's moved from state to state as his position escalated and he's got quite a few stories about the ineptitude of people they hire to guard the criminals the system throws their way. Even in some of the 'high-flow' prisons discipline and training can be so lax that some of these people shouldn't be in change of pre-schoolers; let alone dangerous inmates.

My father worked as a firearms instructor for police, Border Patrol, and civilians for many years so I know what you mean.  He was amazed at how much better civilians performed--consistently--than police officers or Border Patrol simply because they practiced regularly and actually gave a damn about being good.  He was amazed at how many police would have to qualify once a year, and decide that that meant they only needed to practice with their firearrm one week a year or so (just enough to get up to par to pass the qualification), rather than practicing off-and-on throughout the year to keep their skill level up if it was needed in the field.

Which dovetails into both of my points nicely:  1. I feel that a police officer should be a professional and that means more than doing the mare minimum training required to keep their job. and 2. They should be held to the same standards of accountability that a civilian concealed carrier would if they shoot the wrong person, in particular when they do something like, say, unloading 50 rounds into a single truck which indicates trying to do more than just stop a threat.

Quote
Maybe I'm being naively optimistic but it seems like the solution should be less 'Teach you how to kill someone with plausibly deniability' and more 'Here; have some proper training. Here; have some standard issue defensive equipment (like advancing Kevlar vest tech for something wearable entirely on duty) so you don't feel like it's a quick-draw contest to survive.'

Seems reasonable to me.

If I was in LA, I would take my vacation now and get the fuck away for a month...

This also seems reasonable to me.

I'm inclined to agree.  On the one hand, I can see why this happened - they felt they were under threat from someone actively hunting them and they panicked.  On the other hand, they are police and it is their job to be a cut above the rest in both training and practical application of that training and not panic and shoot random people, and this goes double as long as most police officers who shoot the wrong person while feeling threatened continue to be given immunity from criminal prosecution that a civilian carrying a gun (legally) would never receive under similar circumstances.

So that's the reason for the 2nd amendment, right?

(Not even sure if I'm trolling or making a valid point myself...)

You are trolling if you are being serious about making a point, because the 2nd amendment actually doesn't have very much to do with this story (at least directly), and if it does it's over a point that's been debated countless times in gun control debates (one crazy guy going around killing people scenario). I suppose you can ironically point out that this guy thinks he's some kind of revolutionary which is some peoples' justification for their support of the right to bear arms but at the end of the day this is pretty much another "guy gone crazy" scenario.

The real irony here is that the guy is an ardent supporter of gun control and has left messages basically saying 'NRA SUCKS, GO PIERS MORGAN'.

Meanwhile, the LAPD has managed to search 400 houses while looking for him.  I wonder how many of those houses they had warrants to search.

I will bet any money I have now and all money I will have in the future that those cops won't see 30 days unpaid leave for this, much less the 30 + years in jail that any non-cops would if they had shot the wrong people thinking they were protecting themselves.

EDIT: A second group of police on the way to help out with the first shooting came across a guy driving a black truck on the way there and shot him.  This just gets better and better.

I love 9gag. <3

http://9gag.com/gag/6521433

When I made Facebook, I said that I would only let some friends, mostly online ones, friend me. Then my mother got ill and I let her friend me because I wanted to be able to check in unobtrusively. Now however she is making me add relatives I loath and my timeline is just filled with racism and bigotry and all sorts of shit I don't agree with or want to see. So as far as my family knows I've deleted the account.

I haven't went that far yet but believe me, I sympathize.

Personally I use Facebook largely as a news/funny crap feed and to badger people that I like to talk to who are too lazy to get an instant messenger.  I hardly ever post any updates on there other than a (very) occasional song from YouTube or sharing a funny picture.  Upon a quick check I am shocked to see that I have nearly 40 friends on there, even if many of them are family members I didn't really want to add.

Came across this on Facebook.  Ultimate Valentine's Day present?  Quite possibly.

So I've just been informed that on the other website I frequent, I've made 14,269 forum posts and 4444 front-page comments....in a little over 3 years. I've seen people be on sites for almost 10 years with lower post counts than that. Please note, that the site in question is a Nintendo website, and I stopped caring about Nintendo 3 years ago. G-d knows how much I would've posted if more people talked about games I genuinely cared about. Really, if it weren't for their surprisingly good anime community, I probably would've left there long ago...and that's looking more tempting than ever.

At a metal forum I used to visit you got a custom title of 'I HAVE NO FUCKING LIFE!!!!!!!!' after you hit 15,000 posts.

I took a nap and woke up to finish the beta reading task in the middle of a Walking Dead marathon.  Life is good.

I'm beta reading the first few chapters of a friend's novel and at her request am being quite thorough with style editing.  Fine with me given that I'm pretty a damn good prose stylist--my posts here generally look like shit because they're usually first drafts, I promise--but that particular style of editing can be difficult because it requires you to think of how to restructure and rewrite sentences and make suggestions on that, not just note grammatical errors and such.  That the editor she has hired has instructed her to give the first few chapters to eight beta readers, cut down to four to send the middle stuff, and then cut down to two to send the end stuff to does not help matters because I have a competitive streak and thus become all the more hell-bent on doing it right.

In short, my brain is fucking fried and I need to find something else to do so I can go back and knock out the third and final chapter later this evening.  (For reference, the section I've edited is 40 pages in Word, size 12 font, standard margins...and 43 pages long with my edits included.)

After reading through part of 2001 and the beginning of ...Rama I've realized that Clarke's style has started to wear on me and I need a change. I can always return to Clarke later. I grabbed the LoA '50s sci-fi collection and started on The Space Merchants. It was just the jolt of caffeine I needed. (No pun intended. ;) )

Guys, this years RPGFan statistics are in!  I thought I would share them with you guys.

The forum is so awesome that it causes one to forget about the main site.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
