Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Recently Viewed Movies Episode 2: The Vampire Bites Back

So I watched The Hobbit. Despite a initially having a crappy feeling that they cashed in big time by making three movies I enjoyed this a lot. It's been a long time since I've read the book, so I can't really say what's been added in but I thought the movie had good pacing. Having been bummed by "meh" reviews I was very guarded about this. But as soon as the thing started I was caught up in the awesome production values. The excellent attention to detail from LOTR is back but even more refined. This movie is a stunner and technically awesome. The characters are pretty solid too, for the most part. I'll watch Martin Freeman eat a ham sandwich though, for Pete's sake.
I like the slow reveal of Smaug too. I can't remember if the Necromancer was in the hobbit...or not. In fact I'm not angry about the addition of extra material at all. They're excellent storytellers and will do everything justice.
I was pleasantly surprised with The Hobbit myself.... I didn't think I was going to dig it at all considering it was my least favorite of Tolkiens writing.... and to top it off the appeal of Middle Earth seemed to have wore out entirely to me after the recent years of excessive LOTR media.... but I was totally wrong! In fact, I liked it enough to erroneously run out and purchase the terrible Lego LOTR game right after.... I was sucked in! Baited.... fell for it... and middle earth took me for another 60 bucks damnit.... but that movie was absolutely worth my time :) The Hobbit is a pretty great film. Jackson definitely lived up to his prior entries into Middle-Earth, but at the same time improved upon what wasn't so hot in the trilogy, namely getting rid of some overthetop character archetypes like the often too silly rivalry between Legolas and Gimly. At any rate, Martin Freeman played an excellent young Bilbo, and the whole company of dwarves was quite solid as well. My only complaint there is that a couple still looked a touch too human, but that may just be a symptom of them being "young dwarves" Yoda, the necromancer was in the book. However, it was Gandalf that went and discovered him, not Radagast, but I guess they wanted the latter to have a more profound role. Most of the added stuff is still legit too, since it's in the errata. The main antagonist, though, is altered somewhat, but doesn't really take away from the tale. Django Unchained
One reason I'm always happy to be a fan of Tarantino is that for the most part he's always able to deliver a really solid film. Django is no exception. It's what happens when you mix the action of Kill Bill vol. 1, and the talkity-talk of Kill Bill vol. 2, and while you don't get it in the same extremities as those two films did, the end result is still an incredibly satisfying Western film... heck, probably the best since True Grit, and....fuck... Tombstone (I'm your huckleberry) before that (either way, it brought life to a certainly dying genre).
The performances were perfect. YUP. People who like Westerns and action and great acting should watch this film. Christoph Waltz, man, does he ever inspire me to be a better actor. Jamie Foxx did a stellar job in his role too, conveying his emotion and tension wonderfully. The whole flick is a genuine good time, but probably one of the best stories Tarantino has ever told, in my opinion. I mean, I really liked Kill Bill and Inglorious Bastards, but this tale spoke with a lot more genuine emotion and commitment. Sorry, that's the best way I could word my thoughts. I mean, Django Unchained still has a fair amount of Tarantino's tongue-in-cheek moments, but they really didn't take me out of the film like they have in the past. I really like how the tale was told, how the actors conveyed it, and it also has a really rad soundtrack too, in my humble opinion. Again, go see this film if you don't mind a bit of blood. And let me stress that although its bloody, its not gory. Rare are the moments that you're are forced to see the wounds, rather you just see the overthetop by product. And it is so over the top that your brain immediately goes to a place of "this is like a comic book or cartoon" and desensitizes you, reminding you that its all pretend. Fret not, you only have to see Foxx's junk.

I can't say that I'm excited about them making iOS games...
Sure beats not making anything, though. All those people still have jobs and an awesome logo now. I now expect an iOS game that is their unicornabeargasus chasing robot unicorn. Anyways, I'm glad they have work, and its a shame they won't be doing things on as grand a scale as Amalur, but still, they're doing stuff, and I'm sure they'll make some great titles. And besides, looking at what Epic has done, it won't not be far flung for them to have something as awesome as Infinity Blade, so maybe their is hope for something grand.

I'm not sure if Sid Meier's Pirates would fall into the true RPG vein, but it's a pretty solid pirate game, if a bit repetitive. I have it on the iOS and it's a solid good time, and its model could definitely be built upon to make a really solid pirating RPG.
I've wanted to get my hands on Skies of Arcadia for ages, just cannot find it anywhere!

Well then, lots of hot talk goin' on here. I'm not overly excited for this either, really. Personally, I think the title lends itself better to co-op, having people come and join together in the pre-existing single player world. With the MMO, I just think it'll get too cluttered with all those "Chosen Ones' running amok, y'know? However, story-wise and whatnot, I'm sure that'll be just fine in the MMO atmosphere, especially if they take a page from how I understand ToR does its thing. Plus, Skyrim, for example, is already chock-full of mindless sidequests and fetch quests, so, that's part of the work gone right there. There're a nice amount of deails, There is no reason this game shouldn't have a classless skill system and player housing... ...The fact that they think neither of those things work well or don't belong in an MMO annoys me. Totally agree here. That's a bit disappointing indeed. I do loves me some classes, but I think the system Skyrim opened us to will be just dandy in an online setting, really. Perhaps they think it'll create too many variables for their systems to handle? I know nothing about serves and data and all that jargon, but I assume that storing that info for each character wouldn't be too over complicated to warrant railroading them into a set selection of limited variable?

Late to the party, but yeah, caught whiff of this a while back.
I can't believe that they just got axed and everything by EA. I haven't been reading too too much on it, but why the heck did it happen? I thought Amalur was doing well in sales, in spite of its proximity to Skyrim and ME3?

I... I have no idea what I have just witnessed... it all made sense until what seemed to be a crazy, Dragon Quest-style battle disco happened and I just lost all sense of what the heck.
Looks well made, though. Great design and sense of place.

So, funny story: I've obviously known of Dark Souls (and Demon Souls) and its greatness for a while, mostly thanks to the RPGFan Podcast aka Rob and have wanted to give it a go. I have had a few opportunities at a friend's place and I know I like it, so it was a matter of waiting to get it, what with Skyrim, Skyward Sword, and ME3 to wade through.
Now a few weeks ago, I was chatting with a friend about games and such and she tells me she has Dark Souls and she effing hates it! It's too damn hard, she can't even get past the first boss, and it just makes her feel terrible (haha). Clearly, that hardcore isn't her jam. I tell her I'm a fan and I'm looking forward to getting it. What does she say? "You can have". I can just take it, she doesn't want it in her sight at all hahaha. So, I lent her Kingdoms of Amalur to heal the wounds and she has given me Dark Souls which I am now happily breaking into.
Such a fun, challenging title that really demands you keep your wits about you. I have moments I feel so badass getting those counters right, but then the next scrap my timing's totally off and I get my ass lain out. The worst. Better go retrieve my souls! NOPE! Laid out. *face palm*
*rinse*
*repeat*
Totally going to enjoy this grind. I'm running with a barbarian who seems pretty solid so far. Really wish I had taken down the Asylum Demon in the first place. I was making good headway, got about halfway, then got sloppy, dangit. Just didn't have the patience after the fifth try.

... I'd have to go with... uh... Tetra from Windwaker, if she actually had real people proportions and didn't look like a 12 year old... Come on now, you can be honest. This is a safe place. *super subtle wink* ...awkward... And yeah, I remember that manga marriage thing too at one point. Weird folk about.

I should be kicking around after rehearsal tonight to join the ruckus!

Is no one else a sniper? I love being a sniper/biotic combo and pick off the distant enemies while Garrus and James/Javik do the dirty work up close (for some reason Garrus never uses his sniper rifle).
Vanguard sniper, right here. I pick at them from a distance then switch to a shotty or pistol when I need to close.

Matoya. Her magic brooms would take care of shit and we could travel the countryside. Best ladyfriend evar. In slightly more seriousness, but not really, I'd have to go with... uh... Tetra from Windwaker, if she actually had real people proportions and didn't look like a 12 year old - more like this. I dunno', girl had some spunk, a sense of adventure, and could certainly handle herself, but could eventually recognize when she needed a little help as well. Also had a soft spot for Aeris. She was just a kind-hearted gal. Dunno' if I'd enjoy Sephiroth as her stalker, though...

Haha, when it's me playing, the infiltrator's gonna be terrible. It'll be hard not to go GUNS BLAZING - or in my case, biotics flaring. ;)
Evidence of this has been seen. We lost a Liz many a time haha. Also had a few Agent D drops too ^_~ hahaha
