Good God this thread, in the last few days, has left me wanting to play Star Ocean 2 (again), Star Ocean 4 (for the first time), Rogue Galaxy, Shadow Hearts, Tales of Eternia, Tales of Xilia and Arc the Lad.... I feel like I have gaming-ADD now.

Let me just make a brief statement in case anyone mis-read me. I have no argument against Symphonia (or Lloyd). My bias in this case is purely a matter of subjective and personal taste. After giving it a shot, I can't even say it aged THAT badly. It just doesn't change the fact Symphonia is not my preferred Tales flavor.

Ironically though, it was Destiny that was part of my teens and high school career, introducing me to the series. And now that a few of you have brought up that Symphonia was "the one" for all of you, it makes me wonder how much of an impact that has on my/our experience of the titles in question.

One thing is for certain the nostalgia factor runs DEEP within us perceptually. I see that more clearly than ever in the last year having replayed Chrono Trigger, FFIV, Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire 3 and Seiken Densetsu 3. Aged or not, those games grant an unrivaled experience for me. Eternia/Destiny can  (and soon will) be added to the list. If that is Symphonia for other Tales' fans than I have no question as from where the "love" stems.

The moral of the story is this, Nostalgia+Great Game=Gaming Bliss. The end.

Good!  It'd be awful if you had to deal with it.  It's not a big deal, just stinky.

I still love Symphonia, but I played it in the height of my high school life and get those "those were the days" feels.  It's definitely aged badly though.  The glitz I remembered isn't there or it's more of a...dull...glisten?  Anyways.

I think I'm gonna attack Tales of Graces again this Summer.  That game is everything I'd want from a gameplay-oriented title.

I totally understand that "those were the days" type of feelings. Actually that is precisely what I feel when I play older ps1 and SNES titles. Eternia drips with that type of nostalgia in my case. Symphonia on the other hand was post high school for me during a period of time when I was trying to escape the realities of adulthood through screwing off and ingesting chemicals while doing a bunch of other unsavory things. I learned A LOT of lessons and had a great deal of good times post high school/pre-adult-hood but it is NOT a time I care to revisit emotionally or in any other sense.

Now as for Graces F, I couldn't agree more. I might be so bold as to say it was the most enjoyable battle system of the last gen that I have yet to experience. Gameplay aside I adored the cast. Pascal, Hubert and Richard in particular. I would like to give it another run-through sometime in the distant future but summer tales for me will  probably be a Jude play-through of Xilia prior to Xilia 2 if I find the time since I only did Milla.

Its funny how when I play a Tales game that I like as much as I did Vesperia or Graces I almost "forget" that other franchises and games exist that I also want to get to eventually.

Can the Dualshock 3 sync allow the right stick to be used as a replacement for the PSP's D-Pad? If so, I REALLY might consider this.

I've never played any game that replaces the D-Pad with the right stick. The left stick seems to work in place of the D Pad on everything I play. For some odd reason though it doesn't work on the main PSP menu, only the games, when I use my gold dualshock (pictured). Yet when I sync my other Dualshock (black) the analog function seems to work both in game AND on the main menu.... I have no freakin' clue as to why this is.

Well I landed myself a CE of Symphonia and curiosity bested me... Had to give both Symphonia and Eternia a test run to decide which I wanted to play next (after Dice's kind help in narrowing down to the two).

Now the entire matter is silly on my end given the fact that I'm not ready to start either yet, but it was something I needed to lay to rest for my own peace of mind.

Anyhow, Eternia is the winner for me by a long shot.

As I mentioned, I played Symphonia through almost a decade ago and I claimed to have all but forgotten it. Well a few hours of gameplay was plenty to jog my memory... Not that I think its bad, nor do I hate it or anything but its just an uncomfortable bridge between the old tales that I loved as a kid (2d hand drawn) and the newer tales (ps3/xbox). In particular (being the shallow fool that I am) the character models really bother me. If this were say the only Tales game available, I'd probably be really into it. However, with other options on the table I am going to heed Dice's advice and just keep this one in my back pocket for a future re-play-through someday.

Ultimately, Tales games really come down to the casts for me. And I suppose I'm gonna be the odd man out when I say I just didn't care for the cast in Symphonia. Lloyd in particular I remember bugging me the whole game.

My reasoning is silly and superficial I know.... But none-the-less, all it took with Eternia was a brief beginning hour and a "volt glitch check" to see plain as day that I will utterly LOVE this game. And for the record (Dice), I am happy to report that I am indeed VOLT GLITCH FREE!! LoL

Thank you again Dice for leading me to a solid decision on the matter.

listing over!

this copy of Xeno is no longer up for grabs. Keep your eyes peeled for another in the future as I seem to compulsively buy and re-sell this game... LoL

There ya go Holy! I hope those pics suffice.

I Pm'ed you about shipping arrangements... we can talk further about that.

Lastly I want to make sure you know EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE GETTING!!!! so let me make a few points perfectly clear at the risk of sabatoging a sale here in the interest of honesty...

A.In case you still can't tell, the box IS NOT in good condition. It is acceptable but banged up (not destroyed).
B. I am a HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY smoker. If the scent of smoke bothers you do not purchase my items.
C. All contents of the collectors edition have seen wear and tear due to shelf display. While nothing is in poor condition. It is by no means perfect and is repackaged.

Long story short this is not a pristine copy. If that is a concern DO NOT BUY. It is however a good deal with the extras, so if content outweighs item quality for you then it is something to consider.

You're making me want to hurry up and get through the Interlude, Klyde. Luckily none of it seems all that difficult aside from initially being underlevelled.

I actually died quite a few times during the interlude..... those damned demon doors... *shudder*... totally unfair

That unexpected and sharp 16-bit era difficult spike in battles is part of what I like though. Makes you really feel as though you'd best be prepared by way of your inventory because an any point you can encounter a monster-in-a-box that can and will simultaneously petrify, poison, silence and cast doom on all of your party members. No cure-all type items??? GAME OVER KID!!! LoL
655  Media / Game Journals / Re: A Game Journal Reborn on: February 27, 2014, 06:27:27 PM
Yeah, that's what I've been doing to.

Also trying to decide to go with Tactics Ogre, The 3rd Birthday, Persona 1, or Growlanser IV on my PSP next (I kinda want to save TO for pallet cleaning purposes but it IS a really good game; and I do have the PSX version to play through as well).

I was really loving Growlanser IV when it came out. I put it down because I was trying to juggle too many games and totally need to give that some proper attention (someday).

Soooooo is anyone here familiar with FF4 The After Years? In particular, chapter progression... finish Ceodore and now I have the option of quite a few characters. Is there a "correct" or "best" order? Does it matter....?

Also just an aside... FF IV TaY officially wins "the best FF character portrait pics ever" award by my standards, as well as 2-d spritework in an FF game. Lovely, just lovely. I will most likely express this multiple times in this journal as I update my progress until someone points it out as annoying.

GameCube also had Skies of Arcadia Legends and Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door along with the two Baten Kaitos games.

I have had Skies of Arcadia for the Gamecube on the shelf for over a year now. Every time I finish a game and think about playing it I go "naaahhhh, they are gonna announce the HD re-release any day now, I know it!!".... I'm beginning to think I'm wrong.

*four pages of gender debates*

My god. What have I done.

I just rewound to two nites ago when I posted about a Zelda, Metroid crossover and had the same feeling... You may have helped light the fuse Aeolus but I made the bomb, so I can't let you shoulder the blame all by your lonesome.

I will now contribute my great and grand wisdom and feelings on all that was discussed.

Samus is still cool to me ( I have never played Other M) as are feminists and I am NOT a stoner!! LoL

Truth be told, even many moons ago, whilst heavily drug addled and knee deep in addiction I didn't like Marijuana. Always made everything feel a lot more difficult then it really was for me.

*Phew* Now that we got that out of the way.....

I completeted Ceodores chapter in FF4 TAY and STILL have the "Tales" itch despite having enjoyed TAY quite a bit. The chapter division of TAY however makes it easy for me to entertain the idea of putting it down and picking it back up and as such, I'm amusing the idea of playing yet another Tales game intsead.

After consulting the official authority on the subject last night (Dice) I'm feeling really compelled to play Eternia or Symphonia. I'm leaning toward eternia but also have the beat on a Symphonia collectors edition that I could possibly have a chance at grabbing. If I get the CE I know I won't be able to contain my excitement and will have to tear into it-LoL

I'm getting sick of paying attention to new releases. They confuse the S**T out of me in  terms of what I really want to play.

In other news. I beat Flame Mammoth in megaman x.... I actually did so about a week ago and can't remember if I announced my joy. Beating mega man bosses is BIG for me.
658  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tales of PlayStation(s) revealed on: February 26, 2014, 06:54:06 PM
Wow Dice, that is an awesome and thorough response! Super quick too!!

I would be playing like this http://www.rpgfan.com/boards/index.php?topic=13632.0 (My ultimate PSP experience post) if I chose Eternia.

So it is indeed down to Symphonia or Eternia next for me as far as the Tales games go. I'm really thinking Eternia might be the winner here for me. What you said about the world map REALLY has me intrigued, and I already own it (big plus).

Thank you again for your help. I feel like your tastes are extremely similar to my own and your favoring Eternia as you do makes this all the easier for me.
659  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: South Park: The RPG on: February 26, 2014, 06:46:27 PM
Just got around to watching the most recent 13 minute preview of the games start. I can't believe how appealing this is becoming to me with absolutely no "South Park love" in my bones... It reminds me of a more perverse Earthbound.
660  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tales of PlayStation(s) revealed on: February 26, 2014, 06:11:57 PM
Dice, give it to me straight here.... I need your honest answer, being the tales girl.

While I'm sort of considering going backsies on my "waiting on symphonia" stance, I still know there are way too many tales games i want to get to.

I'm sort of just falling prey to the new release excitement, and as I expressed weeks ago here I really want to get to Eternia, Destiny and Phantasia.

So my question to you specifically, although I would love anyone elses input as well, is which out of those 4 (Eternia, Destiny, Phantasia and Symphonia HD) would you suggest looking into first. I really love old hand drawn art and spritework which is part of the reason I was/am leaning toward Eternia, Destiny or Phantasia but am also feeling REALLY compelled at the moment to just say screw it and check out Symphonia.

I know you (Dice) have mentioned Eternia as your unsuspected favorite and that really sways me. But I am curious how you feel it holds up to or trumps the others.

EDIT: I must say part of the Symphonia appeal to me is superficial. I didn't know you get costumes for having Xilia and Graces save data. I love costumes... this may be a decieving my senses a bit and luring me into the wrong choice...
