in a moment of weakness today, I attempted to sell atelier escha and logy to escape the responsibility of having to finish it even though I'm clearly near the end. LoL

my plan was foiled however when the dude gave me the game back and said to give it to him when I was through with it!!!

I've no excuse now! On to assignment 8 I suppose.

Terranigma this weekend is all sorts of awesome! Difficulty spike coupled with lost village full of zombies = AWESOME in klyde's book.

Something about that desert town and zombies got me thinking about a suggestion Dice made to me a little ways back around christmas about giving Red Dead Redemption a shot..... I know nothing about the game but its on my mind now thanks to Terranigma this weekend.

One more night left of the retro gaming weekend for me and then I think its back to Escha and Logy. I need to kill that game and move on before I lose interest entirely.

Battle Princess Arcadia looks good!

As mentioned, I too was looking forward to BPA. However, after browsing some initial impressions of the import (after reading Tiamat's post) I'm getting scared its gonna be another pretty looking dud of a game. Pretty enough to sucker me in day 1 of course...

last week was BIG for me!! After finishing Bastion and Child of Light, I was able to comfortably move into Drakengard 3 this week.

without echoing myself and most every review on the internet, I'll simply say that I would be glowing about my Drakengard experience if it were not for the inexcusable mechanical wonkiness.... I may wait for a patch or update to resume play.

I also gave some more time to Escha and Logy this week. I am happy to report, mid way on year three, I am finally somewhat intrigued.

And finally, Terranigma. Last weekend didn't really provide too much time for play but I did restore human life to the world. I am stoked to get back to it this weekend as I am sort of at loss in regards of what to expect.


- Zero is an absolute joy in Drakengard. Depending on what they do with her throughout the rest of the game, I might so far as to say she is the running for another all time fav protag of mine.

- I loved the weird illustration of the food chain post the snowy mountain dungeon in terranigma.

so how long does it typically take them to get updates and patches out for games? I never paid attention to such things in the past but I am seriously considering putting this game on hold until it runs a bit smoother.

after about a dozen missions, I finally played 1 side mission last night that ran smooth. it was MARVELOUS!!!! I actually didn't realize just how bad the game was running until I experienced that.

This whole thing got me thinking, if in fact the SE France twitter account is correct, could this be SE coming to terms after Bravely Default sold well that hey, we could actually make money off of this?

Nier is totally on deck. You guys convinced me a month or two ago. The title is sitting on my shelf right now actually.... but if I wasn't completely sold on it before, playing Drakengard 3 has me intrigued enough to explore the franchise further beyond this title.

Now mind you we are talking about backlog here. As such, it may be this time next year that I finally get to it. LoL

I don't know how I feel about this game so far.

As someone with no Nier or Drakengard experience, I went into this without expectation. I am really pleased in some respects. But in the ways this game is flawed thus far, it is seriously hard to swallow.

The music, characters and mood are so unique and brutal its hard not to appreciate. They did a fine job of making dark, gruesome and provocative very artsy and beautiful at the same time here. For that reason alone I can safely say I like the title.

There are some real nice conveniences in the title I appreciate as well. The ability to quickly return and replay just about any segment of the missions, coupled with a nice timeline and story summary are things I wish more highly story driven and cinematic experiences would do. Its super accessible to revisiit, rewatch/replay anything.

However, my praise upon initial impression ends there.

The camera, control and framerate in this game is freaking atrocious. Screen tears, stutter, poor lock on and wonky-as-sin-camera make for a mechanically rough ride. Now, I'm not saying it is unplayable. I feel more or less like I am picking up and trying to play a really dated early ps2 hack and slash that was well received back in the day.... Good but very jarring to try and adjust to due to the dated and aged nuts and bolts, if you will.

Bad qualities aside, its refreshing to have something this unique in my hands at the moment.... I just wish it were a bit smoother!! LoL

- It plays more or less like I had hoped Lightning Returns would have. This is a good thing in my book.
- I'm very intrigued by what they (hopefully) reveal to be Zero's motivations as the plot unfolds. Thus far she has the potential to be a real memorable character for me.
-I have now seen a baby dragon pee/crap upon getting yelled at.... and roll around in it. I feel like a more complete human being now.

Well put sir, I concur. I think the closest I felt a CH title has come to making the most of its various mechanics has been the latter Neptunia titles. While crafting items seemed damn near optional it never really felt obtuse or overwhelming. Well, I can't really speak for V (didn't play through it) but MK2 made exploring and understanding the various mechanics functionally worthwhile.

One useless mechanic I LOVED in Neptunia was the ability to photoshop yourself a custom palette for your transformation outfit. While not functionally necessary to the game at all, personally, I thoroughly enjoyed sporting a Rei Ayanami plug suit whilst transformed in battle most of the time.

As with Agarest Wars 2, Mugen Souls Z is learning from its past mistakes.  Are they perfect?  Nope.  Agarest 2 still suffered from severe difficulty spikes and repetitive grinding.  And Mugen Souls Z could still potentially suffer from some stuff that wasn't quite smoothed over.  A common complaint of Compile Heart games is that they're amusing at first, but drag out too long; kinda like trying to use one smear of peanut butter for an entire loaf of bread, so I'm watching out for taht.  Agarest 2 adn Mugen Z are certainly not Editor's Choice "valedictorian" material, but potentially "most improved student" material.  They're a far cry from the drek that !F/Compile Heart used to be.  Kinda like how Hyundai cars were tin cans back in the 80s and are now some of the best made, most reliable cars on the road.  

As for Eiyuu Senki, I'm again glad to read that Fruit Bat is a good localizer, though I'm curious if the sanitizing of its eroge components hinders the storyline or can it survive without them?  

Agarest 2 may very well be my favorite game I did not finish! LoL

It was for the very reasons you touched upon here. Difficulty spikes and length one could not foresee. The first stretch of that game is so easy you'd swear that it is ok for you to not quite get it. However, if you up the difficulty, 25-30 hours in and you are blindsided with such longwinded battles it leaves you wishing you played on "easy" if for no other reason than to speed things along.

Thing was, up until it became brutally hard and a battle of trying to stay interested in the wake of the repetition, it was awesome to me.

That is why I am SURE CH/Idea Factory will have a real winner on their hands someday. They have, in their various titles, excelled and dazzled me in most respects.... sadly however none of these qualities are consistently present in a single title as of yet, and nearly all their excellent efforts are overshadowed by more game-breaking flaws that completely snuff out the fun factor in spite of what each game does right.

I have been fan for years and support these weird niche games but for the time being I need a break.

Certainly looks like it has the potential to be something I could really love.... but then again so did Mugen Souls.

For what it's worth, Mugen Souls Z, so far, seems to fix/smooth over the mistakes Mugen Souls made.  I'm enjoying that one a lot more. 

As for Eiyuu Senki, I'm not familiar with Fruit Bat's localization work.  All I know is what I read from Andrew's 99 Spirits review and he said they localized it very well.  So that's promising at least, that the game in the hands of a competent localizer and not something like O~3 Entertainment's botched translation of Chaos Wars for PS2. 

I actually just got through reading your preview report on Z, Din. Good stuff.

I am real happy to hear Compile Hearts tightened things up. I still firmly believe they will have an utter stroke of JRPG-Awesome-ness someday and perhaps that day is drawing near.

However, even if it were the Compile Hearts title I have been waiting all of the PS3/360 era for I don't know if I can't play it right now. I just simply am burnt out on the formula ATM. Sometime after Disgaea D2 I just lost the taste for that NIS flavor, be it a Nippon Ichi gig or CH/Idea Factory. Something akin to over-eating your favorite food even after you've had your fill of it you might say.

I need me some darker toned, more thought provoking material before I return to the light hearted anime fair. I still have Neptunia Victory and Guided Fate paradox in my back pocket as well.... thing is, between NIS and Namco Bandai for the past year or two I reallly need some SMT, Drakengard, SHadow Hearts, Lost Odyssey and maybe even Dark Souls in my life right now.

EDIT: I'm even having a real hard time getting through the last stretch of Atelier E&L which I was really looking forward too. This happened to me before and it was Persona 2 (per your suggestion if I recall Din) that proved the perfect fit for me.

I finally finished Bastion after nickel and diming it 1 shard and core at time for the last few weeks. Unfortunately I did so the other day while retarded tired (post 30 some hours without food or sleep). So while I enjoyed the ending, I think I may have been too delirious to understand the choices I was making.

Bastion was another example of short-winded and easy to digest bliss. The pick up and play ease of this game was just awesome. I would strongly to suggest this title to anyone with a busy schedule. There were days I literally couldn't find the time to play more than 20 minutes and still felt accomplished.

The other neat part of this beautiful little package was that I really could find no blaring fault with it. Music, Art direction, Gameplay and even the light story elements were all awesome and a perfect fit.

Bastion may not have been epic but very rarely can I say I feel a title did   everything right. In Bastion's case however, I can at the very least, say it did nothing wrong.

I need to discover more games like this.

*Dualing Pistols + War Machete = best gameplay/fun factor (for me)
* Bastion wins my newly created, BEST NARRATION IN A GAME EVER award.
*Never one to replay games, I am HIGHLY tempted to have another go at Bastion. If for no other reason than to see the effect alternate choices could have made on the ending. Couple the appeal of replay with the length of the journey and I can easily see myself going back and giving this another run. A true rarity for this Klyde.

Between finishing this and Child of Light this week, I feel ready for Drakengard 3! This will be my very first Drakengard experience. I am pumped to have at something with a bit more serious a tone then what I've been indulging for quite a while.

Started up Child of Light last night. Beautiful game, as expected. Music is great, too. It's been a LONG time since I've played a turn-based rpg so it's going to take a little time to get back in the groove.

What is real cool about Child of Light is how variable the difficulty and pace of battles can be. I got my feet wet with Normal setting/battle speed 3 and the second I found myself daydreaming and spamming attack I went and upped it to hard and battle speed 4. Totally kept me engaged and on my toes right up on through the finale!

I know you always mention how you have a hard time finding opportunities for long gaming sessions Grim, I sympathize with you. In that respect I think you'll find CoL very pleasing. Its another fine example (like Bastion) where I was able to feel accomplished with an hour or two of game time.

Now I suppose it is back to some atelier E&L before RETRO GAMING WEEKEND COMMENCES!!! Tee-hee... Terranigma here I come!

I appreciate all the wonderful info.

It sounds like a mixed bag of things I really like, and things I really hate to be honest. Could go either way.

In any event, I'm sold on giving Souls 1 a shot considering the price of it at this point.

The no music thing has me a bit put off. It really got on my nerves that there was no music for Dragons Dogma. I keep an open mind however that, perhaps I will feel differently about it with Souls.

I honestly think I would have been singing the praise of Demon's to this day had it not been for having to pull a re-start. I literally could not progress due to my character coupled with where I saved. As I said, I like "difficult" when I know that (with enough effort) I can succeed. That WAS NOT the case with my demons save file I had to abandon.  On that note...

I wouldnt be afraid of screwing up the progression in Dark however, the game is super flexible and allows for all kinds of playstyles. Upgrading equipment is much more crucial than placing points on stats and it's very clear cut which stats will be better for your chosen playstyle.

^^ That was my primary concern/turn off. So I greatly appreciate hearing that holy! Thanks for the advice.
