766  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Fire Emblem 3DS on: January 24, 2013, 01:10:38 PM
I think I'm finally going to buy a 3DS when this game comes out. I love Fire Emblem and this game looks SO much better than the last few entries. Love the series and simply must be able to play this game on launch day haha. Liz's preview convinced me. Just have to figure out whether to buy a standard 3DS or an XL (leaning standard since my brother has the XL and not only is it too big imo, but it makes the older DS games look a little fuzzy because they weren't meant to be on a screen that big). Am I wrong about that?

I had the original 3ds first.... I feel the XL is a MAJOR step up... both from a visual and ergonomic standpoint... also, I detect no fuzziness on any of my DS games (a concern of mine when I was purchasing as well)....

I am knee-deep in Ni No right now myself and loving it!!... I was gonna start this thread myself but sort of figured I'd leave that to someone else since I just had the "xbox before ni no" thread-LoL

All I can say thus far is that in my humble opinion... THIS IS what more JRPGs should have evolved to be.... as much as I enjoy the strange gammut of niche titles that have come down the JRPG pipe in recent years, this is the classic formula evolved correctly in my eyes...

I don't feel comfortable saying one way or the other yet (I'm only at about 5.5 hours in) but I'm pleased in every regard so far.....

And from someone who doesn't care for Ghibli (oddly enough.....) this is, without a doubt, the prettiest JRPG I've seen in years.....

By the way.... the "pee-pee time" girl threw me off..... i thought for sure there was some relevance to that randomness.... I went straight to her when I needed some enthusiasm for the king (i turned off that star indicator thing right from the door)....

Finally finished steins gate.... wow... best narrative about/involving time travel I have seen in ages (possibly my favorite) ... brilliant series. I would like to say more but that really sums it up for me.... if you were amongst the few who didn't see this one (such as myself) don't think, just go watch :)
769  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Wind Waker U on: January 23, 2013, 11:36:32 AM
This is actually pretty cool news to me seeing as how I evaded every zelda entry since OoT.... I was hard pressed to choose between indulging WW or TP recently and jumped on TP.... glad I did as this would certainly be how I would want to play WW (obviously)....
770  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: New Xenoblade? on: January 23, 2013, 11:33:06 AM
damn.... just finally got my library up to date with each current and past gen system.... thought I could hold off on a wii u for awhile.... doesn't appear as though I'll be able to suppress my appetite for this though...

After pouring over as much Ni No Kuni in the last 24 hours as humanely possible, and now waking up and seeing this...coupled with the rest of the gems on the way this year..... well, I'm calling it right here... I predict a revived wave of enthusiasm for JRPG's on par with the ff7/32bit era by the end of 2013
771  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: The NEW Game Journal on: January 21, 2013, 03:51:45 PM
So I'm currently going through some games that I have already beaten in order to platinum them in an attempt to keep myself from buying too much DLC while I try and save some money up. Just finished up with the Record of Agarest War trilogy. Got complete save files for all three also...except for Zero where I am missing one CG from third gen digest mode. I have no intentions of ever going back for that, but it is slightly annoying. >.>

Not sure what game I'm going to go after next. Maybe Tales of Graces f. I'm really not looking forward to playing through that storyline again though. Gameplay for th game is great, but I just cannot care about half the cast. >.>

Kudos to you sir.... if I were to entertain the idea of 100 percent-ing anything in my library I can  say, with certainty,  that the Agarest games would not be my first picks. I love agarest 2 but there is NO WAY IN HELL i would have the patience to trump Agarest 1 or Zero completionist style. Nice work :)
772  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: xbox exclusive that won't distract me from Ni No Kuni.... on: January 21, 2013, 01:49:05 PM
Well, I thought it only fair now to share the results.....Because of this thread and RPGfan reviews, my xbox library now looks like this...

Disc Based:
Blue Dragon
Magna Carta 2
Lost Odyssey
Last Remnant (sorry Aeolus.... i can't do games on my pc)
Infinite Undiscovery
Tales of Vesperia

XBLA:
Bastion
Braid
Dust: An Elysian Tale

On the way from Gamely (once I finish Zone of the Enders HD)
Fallout 3

And for the win..... currently playing, for my first Xbox game, with confidence that it will not inhibit my Ni-No time in any way...... DUST AN ELYSIAN TALE!! Game is freakin' great!!!! Its like a less pretty version of Odin Sphere with better gameplay (not that it looks bad by any stretch)....

The only regret?? Braid (ironically, the only thing that you guys didn't suggest-LoL).....Braid looks nice.... I love the concept.... but it is frustrating as sin in the sense that I can see solutions to puzzles but cannot execute them due to the horrid control.... I just can't time jumps and things right at all... terribly agrivating..

Thanks again everyone :) I am uber-pleased this issue has been layed to rest for me.

773  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Project X Zone on: January 21, 2013, 01:38:04 PM
this is actually the first cross-universe title that ever looked appealing to me... never thought it would see the light of day in NA though.... this is, without a doubt, the most shocking localization news I've heard in some time. i hope this is a sign of future trends.... pleased klyde is, indeed :)
774  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: General Leo & Final Fantasy VI on: January 21, 2013, 01:27:58 PM
wow..... if I was 10 years old again I can easily see me sacrificing a chunk of my summer vacation to do that... i became leo obsessed after renting ff3 at blockbuster only to find the good general playable on someones save slot-LoL

this was beyond neat... how the hell anyone ever figured that out though is both astonishing and a bit sad....
775  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: The NEW Game Journal on: January 20, 2013, 05:19:10 PM
talking emulation makes me nervous as I don't know what is kosher and what is not.... but if anyone wants to know how I've gotten around A TON of emulator/rom-related bugginess (and increased the joy of playing via such methods....) just pm' me..... don't get your hopes up too much though. my method does require some elbow work as well as hardware and is limited to genesis, super famicom, GBC and GBA games but has proven totally worth it in the end as far as I am concerned.

In other news, (and speaking of stuff that never saw the light of day outside of japan) I finally polished off Seiken Densetsu 3 two days ago! Woo- hoo!!! That one has plagued me since I was like 10 years old and tried to play it couch co-op with a buddy of mine..... we both decided deciphering the game via hard copy translation was more trouble than it was worth.... It was the first import title I ever bought.... I'll never forget how excited I was ordering that, Dragon Ball Z hyper dimension and Star Ocean with a super famicom converter for christmas.... good times... good times.....
776  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: xbox exclusive that won't distract me from Ni No Kuni.... on: January 20, 2013, 12:30:36 PM
I have an allergy to shellfish, so I sort of get how you feel. Clams, shrimp, lobster, (real) crab, and scallops all cause me to have breathing trouble when I eat them, and that's like one scallop or a single shrimp. I used to eat fresh crab like it was going out of business, stuff was amazing. Sad times now...

Dude, don't even get me started about the Ni No Kuni itch....I thought it came out last tuesday. I scheduled the entire week, work gym and free time, around this game. I gave items in FFXI away for the week, lend out gil, spent all my excess cash in game....I was prepped for this week. I get to lamestop to pick it up and receive the bad news.....I nearly flipped my shit. When I left, some beggar asked me for change, and I told him, and I quote "Fuck off, I don't have any fucking money for your broke drunk ass, go get a fucking job you bum!". I still don't feel bad about it, but damn if I think I was extreme about it.

This game...it has driven me mad.

Man, I sympathize! The SAME exact scenario (minus the beggar) occurred for me when Catherine came out... I was so upset I started trying to hunt down a store that broke the street date for the game-LoL

I can't do shellfish either..... bums me out a bit.... but the absolute worst for me is cocoa... I used to be a chocoholic... even a pinch of the stuff now is like shooting a cannon through my central nervous system.... I can't even play games for days if I have it.... well I can, I just hate them... and everything else about llife for a good 3 or 4 days... Doctors can't really tell me why this happens to me with cocoa as it isn't a typical allergy and claim genuine cocoa allergies are relatively non-existent anyhow...  Everything else I can't have is a result of malabsorbtion problems with your typical IBS symptoms, however wth me it also results in horrible edema that (if left unchecked) becomes pulmonary pretty quick for me... I take a daily dose of 160mg of a loop diuretic..... furesimide actually.... that is twice the dose of my 89 year old grandmother (how sad is that!)
Dust definitely sounds like it would fit the bill in your scenario.

Thanks dincrest, your words carry weight with me friend! I tried Bastion last night along with Braid (a client of mine kept telling me braid was a "must".... I would argue otherwise.....), today I am going to give Dust a whirl :)

Tomorrow I'll give the "final report" on my xbox status and lay the issue to rest... I feel I owe you all some closure on this thread seeing as how so much advice was given as well as patience exercised.
777  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: xbox exclusive that won't distract me from Ni No Kuni.... on: January 19, 2013, 07:02:56 PM
Fuck you, ya skinny bastard.

I'm sorry, that was the ni no kuni itch talking.

Being skinny through the means that I am comes at a price I am afraid... I'm hyper to a fault and you will always have an edge on me D..... that is, I am quite certain you can digest chocolate and corn as well as a variety of different breads/pastries and confections.... probably dairy and soy too...and I bet you can have fruit.... I you see.... cannot :(...

You, however, are forgiven just cause I typically enjoy your posts/replies -LoL....

It is understandable though as Ni No seems to have us all a bit on edge as of late.... doing and saying strange things... hell, I even rescheduled everything this week to clear up as much time as possible on tuesday...

Ni no aside though, I sure seem to be facilitating the dropping of the F-bomb in this here thread..... i'd best watch myself... i like it here.... wouldn't want to get dubbed a "troublemaker"-LoL

EDIT: Please note my over-use of "LoL" in this thread.... I've thoroughly enjoyed it, and am walking away XBLA enlightened as a result :) Thanks folks
778  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: xbox exclusive that won't distract me from Ni No Kuni.... on: January 19, 2013, 03:25:52 PM
I fucking hate these threads. Just look at a list of reviews and make up your own damn mind.

I recommend Fallout 3

One of the best games ever. But he won't get it.

Ouch, I feel as though I struck a chord...LoL... Sorry Yoda... Let me clear the water so to speak...

Mickeymac more or less summed up a large portion of my general problem...
@Yoda - sometimes that's easier said than done. I know personally I can never decide what to play, hence why I have over 800 unbeaten games. :(

But the real meat and potatos of the situation are that no reviews are ever written with the idea that game selection is based on the fact that you don't want a game to clash with another particular title or become too engrossing.... if each review had a "clash with Ni No score" I wouldn't have started the thread.... Also, I mentioned in the original post that I already began filling the xbox library based the on the RPGFan reviews to further drive home the point that I was looking for suggestions outside the realm of those, more tailored to my current and particular plight.

Lastly, in regard to fallout 3.... it could very well be, by every objective measure, the best game ever....but you clearly know my tastes Mr. Yoda... and as such, you know that even if that were the case (fallout 3 being a title with no equal) I would probably take the next shitty compile hearts over it due to the fact that it just is not my cup of tea.... but the real deal breaker is that it is not an xbox exclusive, which is what I am looking for....

However.... your passionate post with such certainty that I will never try it has swayed me....I think I will gamefly it (fallout3) for the PS3 just to entertain to possibility of something great.... stranger things have happened.... I swore I could never stand sentient animal/ anthropomorphic MC's or platformers and discovered a love for Ratchet and Clank that changed my mind on both accounts (thanks to the suggestions of fellow RPGfan members)..... So I will keep an open mind :)

It's not an rpg, but shadow complex is a good quickie to occupy yourself for a few days. Dust works too, as does bastion.

Or be like me and occupy extra free time at the gym to make up for the inevitable 4 days you will miss playing this.

Thanks! The overwhleming suggestion of XBLA titles has settled me on them for the time being!... The Gym suggestion though, in all honesty, is probably the best guidance of all!! LOL.... excpet for the fact that I already compulsively run 8-12 miles a day.... I have for years, without taking even one day off... I can't "not run" or I become cranky as sin..... I run if I'm sick, happy, sad, healthy and will do so if it is sunny, raining, snowing or otherwise.... There is no day that is bad so long as I get a good run in :)
779  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: xbox exclusive that won't distract me from Ni No Kuni.... on: January 18, 2013, 06:55:18 PM
Why not load up on some XBLA games like Shadow Complex? It should be a quick and dirty timewaster for the next two days or so.

Also, for the love of god do not get the 360 version of The Last Remnant. The PC version is vastly superior and cheaper to get to boot.

I like the XBLA idea.... shadow complex you say??? Any others? I like the way you think aeolus!
I have to admit, I think Blue Dragon might be the biggest conflict, I'd go so far as to say it's probably the most similar game on the Xbox to Ni No Kuni despite the completely different battle systems. As much of a time hog as Fallout 3 is at least it's a very different type of game.

Agreed, I just know I want Blue Dragon if for no other reason than the nostalgia factor of playing something with art by my. toriyama..... blue dragon will however wait til post ni no for me.
780  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Atelier Ayesha on: January 18, 2013, 02:06:55 PM

I pre-ordered yesterday.  I don't know why I'm excited for this given my extremely neutral feelings for the Arland series... Hope they pack an artbook, Hidari is a nice artist.

The art direction is the primary appeal of these games for me... most other aspects actually frustrate me (time limits, micro managing items and ingredients taking precedence over exploration and combat, et cetera.....)

As far as the audio goes, it is a slight bummer..... I do enjoy a lot of my games with original japanese audio, but its not a large enough issue for me to really lose sleep over.

As for the mechanics here vs. arland I'm gonna steal a reply from over at gamefaqs that pretty much summarizes what I've read thus far

This is like start of a new series, IMO there are both upgrades and downgrades

The good:
- new synth system is very easy to use
- more items can be stacked (saves lots of searching)
- the workshop is set up in 4 places across the map
- dungeons are also points on the map (you can skip floors)
- just about everything can be duplicated at wholesale.

The bad:
- lack of those 2D portraits when people are speaking (3D doesn't show emotion well)
- not enough playable/side characters for their interactions
- the new positioning (walking around the battlefield) doesn't have much use
- can't really take full advantage of the new synth system until lv45

The ugly:
- no central place for front quests, you have to find ppl on your own (some stands at like edge of a cliff)
- there is no central place to check what ppl are asking for either.
- weapon/armour skins have to be farmed from bosses

Don't worry about the 3 year part... in this game time is a lot more abundant.
The main quest finish at around end of 2nd year, beginning of 3rd on first play. That leaves me around a year goofing off and fight optional bosses and look for character events.
