766  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Screw announcements, let's just release the game (Atelier Totori Plus) on: March 20, 2013, 04:54:24 PM
The first Atelier Iris is somewhat clunky, but it is very charming. I prefer the second one, but I find the trilogy a lot of fun. The third is the weakest when it comes to story, but the battle system is really good.

I have read that grand phantasm stands alone as its own title... and I have also read that it is the conclusion to the iris trilogy (as in part 3, do not play before playing part 1 and 2.... which I loved by the way)  which is it?
767  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Annoying Moments in otherwise Great Games on: March 20, 2013, 04:50:26 PM
there are various types of annoying in rpgs for me..... plot annoying, challenging annoying and mechanically annoying.....

as for plot annoyance....

ffvi: shadow joins group.... i want to level shadow up.... shadow leaves group before I can make enough money to even get his equipment up to date with the rest of my party...

seiken densetsu 3: i love the first half of the game... then i realize the to finish it, I need to literally replay the whole thing in the second half without any story incentive.... anyone who played knows what i mean... for those who didn't.... you literally have to RE-TREK YOUR WAY THROUGH EACH DUNGEON AGAIN AND FIGHT A NEW BOSS WITH NOW PLOT DEVELOPMENT!!!

disgaea 4: your about beat the game, time for post game content!... nah fooled you!!!.... ok for real this time.... ahahahaha got you again!!.... ok, ok,  this time for sure.... AHHHH! No way, you've got more grinding to do and new end boss to wrap your mind around.....

ar tonelico 2: any of the latter levels of the cosmospheres.... i can only take 25-30 minute dialogues about trust and friendship so many times before they get old

challenge and or mechanically annoying.....

Lunar 2: Borgan
FFVI: Phoenix Cave
FFT: a number of different battles....
Persona 2 (currently playing): most of the dungeons I've experienced thus far.... not in terms of enemies or game overs but in figuring out where to go and what to do in a timely fashion
Earthbound: That little sequence of solo-ness-play in Magiccant or whatever the place was called toward the end
Earthbound again.....: Figuring out what to do to beat the final boss
Y's 1: The final boss (took me like 2-3 dozen tries to beat em)
Suikoden 1: The wars.... too chancy... on my 108 star play-through I had to re-load too many times because characters would get offed based purely on the rocks-paper-scissors chance mechanic....
Tales of Graces F: Final light/color puzzle in the desert catacomb dungeon... ROUGH STUFF.....
ni no kuni: derwin's familiar recruiting requests

there is more but those really stand out in my mind for some reason....
768  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Mind 0 is not Persona...er...well...maybe not... on: March 20, 2013, 04:25:50 PM
is it wrong of me to be rather enticed by this....???

while P3 and P4 have been over-done to the point of exhaustion, they have not been thoroughly or successfully ripped off yet... i've got room to digest a persona rip off visually if its done well enough mechanically...

and certainly, some series have clearly lended to others while both standing on their own.... look at tales and star ocean....

not that I think this stands a snowballs chance in hell of becoming anything comparable to persona, as star ocean became  to tales (i think tales came first by a year or so) but then again by the same token it is a wee bit early to rule it out isn't it?
769  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Megami Tensei Topic on: March 19, 2013, 02:19:38 PM

Got Devil Summoner in the mail, it seems I leave myself open for hits a lot when ever I am striking something.

I just purchased a copy this past saturday.... third time I'm buying this game... I will finish it this time!

I don't know why I sort of dodged all the SMT stuff for so long... I can't shake the obsession I have for it now.....

Currently playing P2 IS, I must concur.... I am totally enjoying the weirdness of this title.... the mood is absolutely what is making it such an enjoyable experience.... They can leave demon negotiating in the past though.... unless done in a whole new way, it is my least favorite mechanic of the franchise... I would however appreciate that jazzy jpop sound be retained from p3 and p4 (i loved the soundtracks for those 2)

So much SMT for me to get through.... maybe I should just abandon all my gaming agendas and just play SMT games until xilia comes out-LoL
770  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch on: March 14, 2013, 02:07:12 PM
Well I sat down to finish this last night.... Man, talk about bitter sweet....

This has been one of the most enjoyable RPGs of this gen for me but I feel cheated in that ending..... now I gotta make my way through the post game stuff just because I just can't leave it on that note.....

I think I am going to have to make a gaming schedule for myself to accomodate the post game content on weekends or something (gaming schedules have worked great in the past for me.... I would have never got through Rorona otherwise)......... Persona 2 has my attention now... I am officially  Ni-No'ed out folks......
771  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Megami Tensei Topic on: March 14, 2013, 02:00:04 PM
I've been playing IS on hard as per community suggestion a page or two back.... I like the difficulty thus far...

I love hard games... sometimes I love brutally hard games.... but I like a certain type of difficult you might say.... when the brutality/difficulty is a result of chance/odds or trial and error I hate it.... when difficulty is a matter of requiring thought, preperation and (in RPG's cases) using another battle command other than attack I'm fine with it...

So far in IS, as I said, I like it on hard... but I appreciate the tip as I really can't see me enjoying the necessity to grind for tarot cards much.
772  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Round 5: Secret of Mana vs Kingdom Hearts on: March 14, 2013, 01:54:17 PM
i have no frame of reference here really because my KH experience is very limited.... but I really can't imagine me enjoying a game more than I did Secret of Mana.... I don't think I've replayed any game as many times as I have SOM... the degradation of the series in the sequels that followed the 16bit era is tragic to me...

I remember as a child playing zelda and thirsting for more.... then secret of mana came out and I felt as though I knew from then on exactly what I wanted in a game... to be honest it was THE title that made me realize how much joy I could really derive from gaming, co-op and fantasy.... I also remember when I saw the first screens of chrono trigger and how excited I became at the prospect of a mana sequel... despite the glory that was CT I was still disapointed it was not a mana sequel....

I just replayed both SOM and SD3 within the last year and love them all the same... I want to give kingdom hearts a go later this year with the HD release but I can safely say its not gonna trump mana for me... I would be a fool to take up any title while harboring such expectation...that and well.... I have a real aversion to disney... I really couldn't stand disney, even as a child (my parents told me I would cry as a baby whenever they would try to put on sesame street or disney flicks-LoL)
773  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Megami Tensei Topic on: March 13, 2013, 02:02:25 PM
No, I meant that you should use a FAQ that tells which Persona is best to use in battle at that point in the story, rather than trying to choose a good one through trial and error, because some Persona have better synergy together which will help you learn Fusion spells to end battles quicker and more efficiently.

thank god..... you had me quite scared there... i don't believe in faqs, but if I needed specific persona to finish this then I would have to place my beliefs aside in this case.... I actually immediately went to find a spoiler free guide to persona fusing when I read that and stumbled on an image from persona 2 EP (a character portrait) I really didn't care to see.... thats why I don't like looking for/at guides... its not the info I'm looking for that spoils anything.... its always what you happen to come across in the process that proves problematic...

774  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Megami Tensei Topic on: March 13, 2013, 01:12:06 PM
..... but damn.... the bomb shelter I just suffered through totally ranks as one of the most frustrating dungeons in recent history for me... i spent hours looking for the exit yesterday-LoL...... once again proving my title here appropriate

Is that the one in the basement of a school?  Because if so, I remember that and it's indeed very very terrible.  I hated that dungeon.  Too hard to see shit.

Yep, that would be the one alright....

If you don't like grinding for tarot card (I know I don't), do yourself a favor and use a FAQ to she which demons you should be fusing at specific points in the game to move things along faster. That's what I did with Innocent Sin and it made my play through much smoother and enjoyable.

am I to deduce from that statement that I actually need to fuse specific persona at points to advance in the story? the thought of that is.... frightening.....
775  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch on: March 12, 2013, 04:44:56 PM
I used Mitey all the way through the end of the regular game with no issues at all. Mitey is a pretty solid familiar, especially for one that is given to you from the get go.

I used mitey the whole game as well.... as I mentioned earlier in this thread, the game allows enough freedom to use any familiar you like really... in other words, you don't have to feel restricted to the most battle worthy combatants to (easily) make it through the whole title....  I leveled up and used a ton that were relatively worthless compared to those of my team that were more competent just because I thought they were cool/cute...

The wisp, the cog thing, the zombie, tyke's and a bunch of others all were in my party for good stretches.... mitey and the monkey never left my party from the beginning (love the monkey!!!).....

when times would get tough late game I'd call out my evolved kitty appropriately named Puhr along with a few other choice selections.... keeping two or 3 solid familiars in your group is plenty to allow you to look at the other slots as "just for fun" whilst still keeping the game pretty freakin' easy.....

so in short... my advice.... raise em cause you love em.... raise em because their movement speed and attack rate are fast making the gameplay in battle way more enjoyable.... but don't even bother feeling it necessary to judge them based on their individual statistical prowess unless you REALLY feel the need to make things extremely easy.
776  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: So finished FFXII....onto The Legend of Dragoon on: March 12, 2013, 04:21:46 PM

That said, my opinion on the matter is that LoD is basically Medieval Power Rangers the JRPG.

^^^^

Most appropriate summary of my impression of the title ever..... which also led to me consequentially putting it down and not caring to ever pick it back up loooong ago....

There will only ever be ONE set of power rangers worthy of my praise.... and if said cast doesn't include Jason David Frank playing Tommy Oliver I don't want anything to do with it!!

777  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch on: March 12, 2013, 04:16:51 PM
Before I got the game I was considering trying to platinum it but now that I've seen how long it can take to get some familiars I honrstly won't even try.
If there is one thing I can't put myself throught (for too long) is those infamous drop rates some games have. Luckily you don't need to care about it at all to enjoy the game, I'm just going out of my way to get 2 familiars from the beginning which are considered good for the end game since I learned Mitey gets pret bad pretty soon.

any trophies that rely on purely on odds... and in this case, bad odds... without any degree of real challenge beyond having the patience to deal with the tedium are a real turn off for me too....

I'm starting to think I may never get a platinum....
778  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Megami Tensei Topic on: March 12, 2013, 04:10:33 PM
howlongtobeat.com lists the backlog/incomplete rate for P2 IS at 86 %.... staggering..... now I'm freakin' determined!!

I DECLARE TO YOU ALL NOW! I WILL FINISH THIS GAME BEFORE MOVING ON TO ANY OTHER RPG!!!! That includes any of my backlogs or my beloved hyperdimension V!!

..... but damn.... the bomb shelter I just suffered through totally ranks as one of the most frustrating dungeons in recent history for me... i spent hours looking for the exit yesterday-LoL...... once again proving my title here appropriate

EDIT: Howlongtobeat.com is ridiculous BTW..... almost all of there moderate or median runs (or whatever they call em...) of RPG's look like speed runs to me.... I think I play slow.... I always tend to be very thorough in my RPG's....
779  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch on: March 11, 2013, 07:42:38 PM
I'd just take a night to finish it and forget about the post-game stuff.  It does expand upon Horace a bit and a certain Wizard but if you have a backlog I think time is better served elsewhere unless you really want the trophies.

Oddly enough, I'm about to start up P2:IS as well.

I may actually take tonite and finish it up depending on when I get my tattoo done this evening... in regard to horace I was wondering when they were going finally reveal something about him! now I'm kinda stoked for the post game stuff.... I was going to try to platinum this actually..... that is, until i realized how much familiar recruiting it requires.... SCREW THAT!!

There must be SMT in the air or something.... as for IS i was almost turned off by the first few hours and the horrific gameplay... I'm glad I stuck with it though as it just seems to be getting more and more interesting the further in I get :)
780  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch on: March 11, 2013, 05:55:48 PM
Heh, I was somewhat in the same boat until I decided to test the idea if that's what it took.

On a related note, I'm doing post-game content and trying to get the trophy for unlocking all the merit awards.  It's just not worth it.  So much grinding it's ridiculous.  The alchemy quest is by far the worst and I ran around for 20-30 minutes and fought 3-4 of the required enemy, but never was able to steal the correct item.  It's just bad luck, but annoying none the less.

I think I may do the conductor quests since it leads to a gold and leave it at that.

^^^jealous^^^^

I have been saved in the final dungeon for about 3 days now.... got an Shin Megami Tensei itch and I knew if I finished Ni No right now I wouldn't even bother with the post game stuff in light of wanting to start persona 2 IS..... i think I will be tending to it within the next night or two though...
