Its funny that harboring disdain for item creation was brought up. I thought I was the only JRPG-Fan with a longstanding aversion to all things alchemy.

Or, you could try something like Mana Khemia or Ar tonelico 1/2.  Their systems are a bit older, but they're focused on something other than Alchemy and you can still get to learn if you find the system appealing.

It was actually Ar Tonelico that broke me of the prejudice toward such game mechanics.

I will contend though that, for me personally, a fine line exists between monotony and addiction when it comes to item crafting.  If I can quickly and compulsively sail through menus and throw crap togeather like I am spamming an "attack" option, I tend to enjoy it a wee bit more than say if I really must scour lists and carefully choose ingredients and wait through lengthy "craft" animations.

That said, while I loved Odin Sphere for other reasons, certain gameplay elements of that title got under my skin. Plant growing to pad out my inventory being one my grievances with the title.

Ayesha allows crafting at warp-9 if you so choose although conversely it seems being thoughtful and "picky" is also sometimes necessary (or beneficial) when crafting. The result for me is a craft system that can easily chew up chunks of my time without regret as I watch my alchemy level go up, up and away! LoL

I'm playing Ayesha myself (a little break to play The Last of Us) but I'll get back to it. I'm liking it but so far I feel both Totori and Meruru are better so Klyde, I would try to get back at them when you think about giving them another shot.

Now, changing topics a little, since we're talking about Ayesha, am I the only one that got a little confused about the new syntheses system in Ayesha compared to the Arland games?

That first statement makes me happy. I knew it was common knowledge that Totori and Meruru were leagues beyond Rorona but to hear that, as a fan of the franchise, you appreciate them as being a cut above Ayesha... well that gets me all sorts of excited!

As for the synthesis, I have only Rorona to compare it to. Thus far, I am finding it much more enjoyable. It just feels so much more streamlined and accessible here. My problem with Rorona was that the actual synthesizing felt somehow like a menu-driven chore... and unfortunately that was in fact the vast majority of the gameplay.  Characters, art and atmosphere in all the Atelier titles I have seen are pretty much the main "draw" for me. With Ayesha here the gameplay being as enjoyable as it is makes for a home-run in my book.

I can't really explain why exactly, but I am sucker for all this outfit DLC stuff! In fact I always am... I REALLY loved the alternate outfits in Alice Madness Returns and bought every one of the DLC costumes for Tales of Graces F (even though I don't think I even used some of them...).

This Cloud-get-up bonus non-sense put me over the edge actually. They got me on board for the pre-order.

THAT IS IT!!!

After today I SWEAR to you all, I will NOT ever put Agarest 2 back in my ps3!!! My obsessive compulsive nature bested me yet again this morning and I decided I would give it another crack.... hours I will never get back....

Seriously, I wish one of you guys could punch me in the face anytime I even so much as think of playing this again.

Agarest 2 is not a bad game and that is the problem for me.... there is too much about it I really like but it unfortunately just really does not outweigh how I much I grew to loathe the gameplay.

I think I am gonna go sell it to someone or trade it in to get it off the shelf and out of my mind-LoL

Back to Atelier Ayesha and a world where I know for what reasons and why I am pressing buttons again.

In the realm of Final Fantasy, for me it is Shadow in FFVI when...

Code:
He tries to save the day on the floating continent.

Although I can't believe no listed General Leo and...

Code:
his last stand in Thamasa.

And for the record, I happened to become really addicted to blitzball for awhile. Although admittingly, Tidus himself almost turns me off to the game entirely.

Well I officially cast Agarest 2 into the abyss of games I will never (or at least am not likely to ever) finish. After spending hours to pick up appropriately where I left off in Gen 2, I finally arrived at the conclusion that I CANNOT play this game...

Last year when I played it I was taken by the stellar soundtrack and lovely art. I still am. The plot and writing is without a doubt a cut above for a CH/IF title. But these points just do NOT justify (for me) the disjointed and unituitive mechanics of the gameplay and the inherent monotony of the aforementioned madness. Not with so many other awesome titles on the shelf.

Picking up Agarest again felt too much like work after forcing myself to complete Wild Arms Alter Code F.... gaming should not feel like an obligatory chore.

Moving on, I started Atelier Ayesha finally... a few months ago I blitzed Ni No Kuni in order to be ready to start Ayesha day 1 and got side tracked by persona 2 IS and consequently EP thereafter. I felt I owed to myself to not let the new Atelier trilogy slip into the realm of the "I'll get to it someday" games/ series (of which I have many).

and lastly.... to those playing FF6... you guys have gone and done me in.... I can't take it... As if this week I think I will be re-animating my "Retro-Weekend- gaming-regimen" where on weekends I only indulge 16-bit goodness (or earlier). I can't keep coming to this board and getting jealous of those playing something from that era and still enjoy any current gen stuff-LoL

^^ while I don't believe gaming should feel like an obligatory chore, I do believe in playing JRPGs like its a second job with schedules and whatnot. How else are you going to conquer these epics!!??? Harharharhar!

Sorry to revive this thread but I am doing so with purpose...

After Rorona left a bad taste in my mouth I found it difficult to return to Arland. As such Totori and Meruru (while I understand to be much better) still sit unopened on my shelf.

However, I HATE when a series I appreciate or am interested in gets annual releases and I am left in the dust.. Unable to ride the wave of enthusiasm over siliconera posts and updates because I have fallen behind on the franchise. Thus I decided to, somewhat reluctantly, begin Ayesha this past weekend.

On to the purpose...

For anyone who may have (like myself) appreciated the art style and charm of the atelier series but was on the fence about returning to the franchise until the franchise returned to something a wee bit more "iris" in nature... for me personally... I am shocked at how impressed I am with this game so far.

Explaining what I've found and appreciated about the title would only echo the RPGfan review and well circulated info about the title. All I am truly posting to say is if you have been looking at the new Atelier titles' previews and going "gee, but I never even got to ayesha.... guess I'll pass.." it may be worth rethinking or taking another look.

If nothing else, given its length, it should fit in nicely now right before I become tales-obsessed in August! LoL
773  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: FINAL FANTASY XV, This is a fantasy based on reality. on: June 29, 2013, 10:44:52 PM
I normally avoid even looking into or at game trailers and previews of things I know I'm going to play... I like it to be a surprise. But I could not contain my curious nature as I watched this thread flourish since E3 and gave in.

First I would just like to say that this game looks freakin' stellar to me thus far. Seriously excited, I am... Excited in the way I was when I first saw a chrono trigger add and thought it was a secret of mana sequel!!LoL

But while we are talking outfits and aesthetics and sexuality...

This guy has the most gorgeous features I've ever seen in a male character profile/status pic. Seriously, I might be a heterosexual man but I call like I see it and this guy is "Gavin Rossdale" beautiful in my book. End of discussion.

Thank goodness the "name that weapon" contest has ended....

I don't care about winning much of anything, though for some strange reason I became OBSESSED with that weapon contest for the last week. Every moment online I spent crafting names for submission.... I got to the point where I started submitting entries under different names and e-mail addresses in case they started to think I was looney for submitting (literally) hundreds of names.

So if anyone here subscribes to the prinny bomb newsletter look for the name "Klyde Chroma" in the winners my friends because it WILL BE SO!!! Mwahahahahaa.... also look for the name "Zach Dende" and "Trynn Ark" just in case.....

NOTE: I don't actually think I am gonna win but I feel the false bravado (coupled with the unreasonable volume of my efforts) somehow increases my chances.

Wild Arms Alter Code F.... IS FINISHED!!

That is one loose end from my childhood taken care of!

This also brings me to my final backlog, Agarest War 2. Upon completion of Agarest I will know what it feels to game without the distraction of a backlog. Of course this all depends on if I can pick up mid 2nd generation and figure out what the hell I was doing within that mess of a skill-system. I remember the plot well enough from where I put it down but I recall being relatively "lost" as far as really having a stategic direction as to how I was developing my team. Geeeeee golly I wish I played this one on easy-LoL

Well I hit a crossroads in Wild Arms Alter Code F...

Do I delve into the ridiculous amount of optional content at the end of the game or B-line it to the finish?... Given how lackluster the writing and characters proved to be for me I decided to just move forward on polishing this one off. This however may have proven an ill-decision, as I just made it up to the top of ka dingle and am CLEARLY under-leveled. I enjoy the challenge but am afraid of not being able to complete the game. And here I thought Rudy's gatling raid alone was gonna be enough to snap the game in half... foolish kylde was...foolish
777  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: The NEW Game Journal on: June 22, 2013, 03:34:05 PM
Wild Arms Alter Code F- De La Metalica (or whatever the god forsaken place was called....) included, what is my estimate to be, the single most unfair puzzle in the history of my JRPG career.... anyone who played has to know what I'm talking about.... the end...
778  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Most aesthetic armor you've seen on: June 20, 2013, 06:21:51 PM

Utterly bad-ass!

Thank you again for all the help guys. I got the job. I start ink-suiting my man up this saturday night!!

For anyone wondering what all the fine inspiration you folks provided me yielded....

That is of course just a rough sketch.

Wild Arms ACF: Ok I know the translation is not stellar but I seriously think they completely missed providing any reasonable direction as to how you go about finding the "Evil" guardian. I don't check faqs but I had no choice on that one... Anyone else have that problem or did just completely miss something?

Dust An Elysian Tale: Finally picked this game back up. I don't know how I put it down... so addicting. Just made it to Mudpot. What a beautiful village for such a grotesque name.
780  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: What's the haps? on: June 20, 2013, 06:11:56 PM
What movie should I watch later? Akira or Zodiac? I have never seen either.

I never saw Zodiac and Akira never really "wowed" me... So I vote Zodiac! Then you promptly report back with a review!! -LoL

But seriously, I just read up on it (because I wasn't familiar) and it sounds pretty interesting. That one is totally on my "to check out" list. Thanks Yoda ;)
