901  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Are turn-based console RPGs officially dead? on: December 11, 2013, 03:26:32 PM
I think in the not so distant future we will see a resurgence of "old school" RPG elements such as turn-based combat, more over world maps, et cetera... Why?... My reasoning, quite simply, is that it has not been a popular trend in home console RPGs for awhile now and sure to be exploited more than it has been eventually. I can really see some of the lesser respected low budget companies moving in this direction as they evolve simply because they already cater to niche markets and they have to know by now enough people want to see it.

Maybe I am just "positive thinking" a bit here because I have believed compile hearts and idea factory was going to start doing "big" things eventually after Agarest 2 (which may have missed the mark so to speak, but sure came A LOT closer than some of their other efforts).

Ultimately though, whether it becomes a "thing" or not, turn based will never die. It can't be THAT difficult in terms of programming to achieve and there will always be an audience.

I wish the watch was a wallet... I need a new wallet...

I am typically a sucker for these things but for nearly 100 bucks I AT LEAST want a figurine. They should of dropped the watch and included the sexy new XIII-3 Lighting Kai Play-arts-whatever figure. That would have been far more tempting.

Ohhhhhhh boy its finally happened!

I see what you did there.

I can also see Chroma tattooing himself slitting his momma's throat for a nickel.

Funny you say that... I have had the inclination to tattoo Shadow on myself for years but ran out of easily accessible spots to do him. I may eventually make him a backdrop to the moogle I tattooed on my left calf someday.

EDIT: An interesting Chroma fact for you guys... From when I was about 9 or 10 until I was 23 I had a dog named Interceptor. I was on my own around 17 and that dog was with me through thick and thin, residency to residency and by my side for the "drug addled maniac years" of my late teens and early twenties. I freakin' loved that dog. Haven't had another pet since. Not even a goldfish.

Well after pouring over all the literature I could get my grubby mits on, watching an 8 hour youtube movie and reviewing multiple more condensed synopsis I feel pretty freakin' "caught up" on all that I missed or had blocked out from my recollection of XIII. I feel comfy moving on to XIII-2.

Why I put such effort into getting back into a franchise that turned me off so bad in the first place is beyond me. Call it a combo of curiosity and lightning appeal I suppose.

What I will say is this. When I am wrong I am wrong, and I have been a XIII nay-sayer since I played through it. But I am changing my stance. I actually feel pretty engaged by the narrative after having viewing/reviewed it in the manner I have. The story contains so much I just didn't get before... mainly because I feel a lot of thematic and meaning goes unsaid or at the very least is open for interpretation. Regardless I can honestly say I am, at the very least, intrigued.

So ultimately I think the problem with XIII (for me personally) boils down to execution and delivery. In other words, it is not so much the content that turned me off (as I initially thought) but more of how it is experienced. So much of what has the potential to be a pretty brilliant and original setting and plot is left to be interpreted as opposed to played.

One thing is for certain. FF13, IMO, is not for the lazy-gamer. And while I don't believe you should really need to "work" to enjoy your games, that is certainly the case here. And it is one instance where I feel as though the effort is worth it.

To summarize my babble... I think I may be a XIII convert at this point. I may actually really like this. If nothing else, I certainly have a greater appreciation for it.

This could be in the running TOTY (thread of the year) in my book.

Of course Dice's pony thread is tough competition.... that was this year right?

"Tarmo" even my nicknames are getting nicknames. :P You guys gotta post about your playthroughs for laughs.

You can count on it!

Guess it's time to shop my head on Sabin.

Alrighty!! Sabin is now officially going to either be be "Agent" or "Dee" for me.... Do you have a preference good sir?
910  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Final Fantasy VI announced for iOS/Android on: December 06, 2013, 04:12:44 PM
Crap, now I kinda want to play FF6 again and name characters of forumers here.

THIS!! A thousand times, THIS!!!

Edgar - Ashton
Sabin - AgentD
Umaro - Kevadu
Gau - Sagacious-T
Relm - Dice
Mog - Starmongoose
Gogo - MeshGearFox
Shadow - Klyde

Hmmm who else for the rest...

That is a stellar list. I want to steal it for my playthrough but I can't/don't feel right about it without the given forum members input. I think I'm going to have to run over to "the haps" and "daily game" and start petitioning for forum members to call characters....

and here I cast you as Relm because of the whole painting thing.

:(

I thought Dice made sense for the gambler.  Also Klyde was super enough to give me a Setzer keychain.

Better yet: Name me how your heart tells you.  I believe in you!

Relm totally makes logical sense for you Dice and your name is befitting of Setzer however, as we have all come to see in the latter FF's, "logic" and "sense" have no role in the FF universe. Additionally something about relm being a child and useless in contrast to other characters disqualifies her as a "Dice" to me.

So by process of elimination, for me you MUST be Terra or Celes. Neither has any defining characteristics that seal the deal for me and so I will  make the call, as any artist might, by measure of aesthetics. Thus you are Terra!!

So far my list is as follows.

Terra/ Dice
Shadow/ Chroma
Locke/ Klutz
Mog/ Starmongoose (will be shortened to either "Tarmo" or "Goose")

EDIT: Now come on people, start calling your favorites for me already so I can flesh this list out! Golly is this exciting for me....

The question is: what could you add to FF6 that wouldn't feel tacked on ?

New sidequests expanding on Shadows character/ After which you get to play as Shadow unmasked and learn the truth of his identity... his last name... is in fact.... CHROMA!!!!!

Doesn't that destroy the magic/mystery?
I mean, if you think a bit about it, you know exactly who Shadow is, but it's nice that those within the game never do (well, except for Strago).

Definitely this.  I thought they provided enough hints in-game without needing to explicitly say it.  However, if it pleases the gentleman,  I shall name "Shadow" to "CHROMA!!!!" my next run through. x)
That actually makes me real happy believe it or not... LoL

Shadow is actually (ironically) my favorite FF character, and possibly in the running for my personal favorite character of all time.

Fair is fair, who do you want to be in my next playthrough Dice? Pictures confirming your naming whilst showing off CHROMA and DICE kicking imperial ass WILL be posted just so you know.. LoL

That actually looks... really cool...

Ok tech savy folk. Tell me how the heck I get this game to play on the big screen. Would Ouya work?
914  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, The Last 13 Days on: December 02, 2013, 06:04:00 PM
FWIW I thought XIII-2 was a great RPG, better than XIII in pretty much every way possible.

Admittedly, FFXIII-1 was not exactly a high bar to clear.

Also, where can I find a quick and dirty synopsis of the plot? SA has been complete bullshit for lurkers these past 2 months (not like this is new) and I don't think I going to continue bothering to follow their LPs anymore (it's murder on my productivity to force myself to rush, rush, rush for a solid month on picking up and following whatever I was following prior to the pay-wall going up in addition to anything new that might have cropped up and looks interesting, only to grind to a screeching halt for the next two months when the pay-wall inevitably goes back up; besides they've run out of Fire Emblem games to LP), and GameFAQs is a goddamn cesspool.

Its not quick and dirty, but if you really want a thorough "feel" of the game whilst digesting the plot I highly suggest checking out the 8 hour "movies" on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=yxMcuzOgVrU

That is the XIII-1 movie.

I was really turned off by the length but it is proving the best refresh-course I've stumbled across.

Now if your still looking for "quick and dirty" for XIII-1, this thread I came across does a pretty good job...

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.408152-Could-some-one-explain-Final-Fantasy-XIII-plot-to-me

Now if I misread you, and you were inquiring about a XIII-2 synopsis, the youtube advice still applies. I myself will be taking the plunge and actually giving it a playthrough I think. While there is other games on my plate I'm more excited about, I have a funny feeling I may really be pleasantly surprised and enjoy it.

Geeeeee golly have I been busy. This time of year I have to make more of those creepy sculptures I occasionally post on here than I can handle. As such I have NOT had ample time to come and correspond with you fine folk.

I haven't posted in the anime journal in like 2 freakin' months... daily game journal in like 2 weeks... hell, I don't think I posted ANYTHING in a week or two. When I'm absent from here, I feel like I am somehow doing something wrong... it makes me feel sad in a strange way I can't really describe. I think this feeling is, in some sense, disordered somehow.

Anyhow I have lots to say dammit!! I just need more time to say it. And, no matter how irrelevant, its important I say it because it is here and only here that I can appropriately express all the irrelevant things that tumble around in my brain.

That is enough inter-personal philosophizing for one post.

I want this shirt.

Now idea how to get it, though.  It's only being sold at Comiket (the website is just for reserving it...) and I'm not exactly going to Comiket.  One of these years I will...but not this year.

It also costs like $63...OK, enough of that silliness.

That shirt is gorgeous but I could never pull it off personally. For a guy who has had his hair purple, red and abrasively bright for years I feel "too loud" when my attire ventures outside the realm of blue jeans and black/grey shirt. I literally own 2 weeks worth of black/grey shirts and jeans and wear the same thing almost daily.
