181  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Games that are like RPGs but are not on: May 19, 2012, 10:57:08 AM
So, I normally play nothing but various types of RPGs, and heavily into narrative-driven RPGs (so a lot of JRPGs and WRPGs that are less sandbox and more playing out a narrative like Mass Effect and Dragon Age).

Although not termed an RPG by most, I also enjoyed Assassin's Creed very much, due to the narrative and being able to play out Desmond's and Enzio's roles (the first one wasn't subtitled so I never played it). I enjoyed the first few Silent Hills as well.

I tried Metal Gear but for some reason couldn't really get into it. Maybe unless is futuristic sci-fi, I am not really interested in the military.

So are there any other non-RPGs like A.C. that I might enjoy?

Restrictions:
1) Cannot be on the PS3 (don't have it, don't plan to get one) or PC (my husband is always glued to it)
2) I would prefer a more historical / fantasy setting.
3) I suck at fast games and would prefer something more relaxing than having frantic button mashing
182  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Kingdoms of Amalur on: May 19, 2012, 10:51:04 AM
There is something freakin' wrong with me...... So I put a few in on Amalur in hopes of deciding what my next current gen play-through is gonna be.... and I have to say this game is great. In fact I can't honestly point out anything specific I don't like aside from the very limitted options in the character editor.... Thing is I STILL DON'T LIKE IT!!!

I just can't get into WRPGS... I try, I really do.... I like this title and want to "want to" play it..... but in a few minutes I get horribly bored and my mind drifts to finishing backlogged JRPGS....

As some of you may know, whom have noticed some of my posts in the past, I really don't usually dig anything but JRPGs... But this is a perfect example of the madness that is Klyde.... a perfectly good game.... one I myself can't even complain about... and I just CAN'T for the life of me figure out why I'm turned off by it.... I love the visuals, I enjoy the gameplay, and while I can't say much about the soundtrack that really doesn't prove gamebreaking in any sense.... I don't know what the hell my problem is....

All I know as I'm gonna give Dragons Dogma a go and if that doesn't do it for me I give up on these styled RPG's altogeather...

I guess I've just become far too set in my ways when it comes to what I enjoy in gaming... and it pisses me off....

Sorry to rant for a moment, but this week has been gaming hell for me..... I sampled a ton of non-jrpgs this week only to run into the same problem every time.... games I'm sure I'll love, that I do in fact find very well done.... and I just don't feel that "magic" that keeps me playing.... in fact I don't even find them capable of holding my attention long enough figure out whats going on.....

I suppose I shouldn't be frustrated by the fact that I know what I like but every so often I look at everything else I'm missing out on in the world of gaming by being so selective and think I should dip my toes into some other genres... I should stop doing this I think as it is proving highly distressing for me right now....

I'm selective too and I had trouble getting into this game. I think the problem for me is that I prefer games that have a big sweeping narrative (so JRPGs for the most part, Dragon Age and Mass Effect of the WRPGs, even Assassin's Creed). I don't seem to do so well with sandbox type games where you are let loose in some world and just explore. I watched my husband play Skyrim and had no interest. I tried Amalur for awhile and just got bored - no connection to the story or the character.

Xenoblade if you have the Wii - loads of exploring, quests and just finding all sorts of cool stuff.

Oh fuck yes thank you Kings

Stupid Canucks. Why must you coast and sleep in the playoffs?

I'll give it a try, although my reflexes have never been top notch. I do like DragonAge/Mass Effect as a mage/biotic because I can pause the screen while "choosing a spell" aka looking for enemies and aiming better at them while the screen is paused.  :)

So is this more like Mass Effect/Dragon Age or like Skyrim? (I like one, but not the other)

I do get that they want to make sure more new games sell as opposed to used games. I didn't have a problem with some bonus content for new game buyers or if its just some cosmetic crap that doesn't make a real difference in game (outfits? special steeds? a new weapon?).

The problem starts to occur if:

1) its changing to preorder or special edition buyers - only those who can drop a lot of $$$ on a game they don't even know is good yet.  Yes, its nice to get a preorder or special edition bonus of some sort, but DLC content starts to feel tacky. The company doesn't get better sales if its preorder vs new.

2) It is something that would have contributed greatly to the game *cough* ending *cough*

3) Or if I am left with the feeling that after I shelled out $60 or so, I don't have the full game. Because that is what I am paying for right? DLC later on to add to an existing full game? No problem with that.

You're welcome  :)

This is a great resource for a lot of Xenoblade stuff actually.

I try to not trade my collectables and if possible, keep as many random items as possible. You won't need more than 10 of any one item for sidequests, although some collectables can be given as gifts amongst party members for increased affinity.

Also... someone here's been romancing Garrus. Besides me that is. :P

Who WOULDN"T want to romance Garrus? <3
193  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Persona 3 portable on: April 08, 2012, 11:25:43 AM
If you get them all, you get a discount in the compendium in new game plus, right? (Can't remember anymore)

Anyways, other than that, there is no reason to try fuse everything in one go. If you need a lower level demon (for a special fusion recipe or one of Elizabeth's challenges) you can always fuse two of the same type to get a lower level of that type.

Or you know, doesn't make much sense.

You CAN keep going until it won't let you go any further. Its usually approx 20 floors per moon or two boss floors (plus 5 floors of weak monsters after the second boss floor).
