Single-Player RPGs / Re: Final Fantasy VIII help

Keep your levels low, use scan and the card ability to transform enemies into cards instead of defeating them (avoids the EXP climb), power up your GFs, draw as much magic of each type as possible, and go nuts.

I... honestly don't get where you picked up that it's somehow brainless. There's a huge depth of gameplay available there. Yes, you can just button-mash and do okay which makes it first-timer friendly one of their stated goals, but it's also god complexity beneath that.

I also thought FF15 had the coolest Shiva in FF

I think FFXV might have my favourite summon designs. Definitely my favourite Ifrit and Titan. Ramuh and Leviathan are traditional, but still good. Shiva's up there, and while I'm conflicted on

I still think it was an excellent departure for them to go on.

Second best Star Wars film after Empire, for me.

FFT is generally a bastion of doing-it-right, though it still has a lot of "women in refrigerators".

Matsuno is generally a more thoughtful and less mainstream-influenced writer, though, so I think that has something to do with it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Japan a very strongly male-centric nation? Like...isn't this style of thinking their norm?

Sadly, yes.

As to some other notions about female vs male roles: The problem doesn't really lie with the "boring" aspect, so much as what "use" the character has. Female characters overtly fall into "love interest" or "inspiration", both of which tend to use the character's gender as an excuse for those tropes. Plus, these aren't really the power fantasies of the player they're what many male writers expect a male player will want out of a female character.

Conversely, thousands of male protagonists exist who are either paper doll templates for the player to imprint upon (most Suikoden heroes, Chrono, etc), or, as @Dice pointed out, the "YEAH JUSTICE!" sort. There are, of course, heroes who don't fall into these tropes, but they tend to have fairly representative motivations. Locke is out for his own ambitions (if we argue that Locke is one of the main protagonists of FFVI), so is Butz, so are Alex and Hiro from Lunar, etc. Rarely do they serve as the foil or companion, and tend to fit the fairly conservative ideas of masculinity classically associated with young men.

I would wager the disparity is less in RPGs than some other genres *cough*fightinggames*cough*, but it's still there and needs smoothing out.

Kinda makes you wonder if they were targeting the anti sjw anti feminist crowd. Or that crowd is part of a larger group im unaware of.

Doubtful. Japan doesn't really have a cultural concept of social justice at this time, especially given that politics tend to be a low-key subject in most media. It's definitely sexist, but I doubt it's meant to be targeted seeing as they provided four very female-gaze eye candy dudes as the main cast. I'd actually say that's a huge step forward for the series, but Cindy is definitely a step back.

Warning, Incoming Rant re: Fanservice

To me, fanservice should be equal opportunity. When Gladio is as exposed, bent over, and taking as many cheesecake shots as Cindy/Cidney, we'll talk about how it's "not an issue".

There's also the larger issue of how women are treated and perceived in society often as sexual objects, in ways men are rarely portrayed and valued. That you could probably take a study of all main-cast female video game characters and arrive at a large majority of them being cheesecake in some way, but could not come near to that number with men, is indicative of a broader problem. We can say "it's just for fans" or "it's just entertainment" or "it's just a game", but it's also part of our cultural heritage, our social experience, and it influences how we perceive ourselves and others. Does sexual objectification in gaming create sexual objectification in real life? No. But it reinforces it.

I think Cindy looks great. I think she's everything my porn brain wants. But I also recognize her as an unhealthy part of gaming given the current state of the industry, its history, and how a large swathe of the male gaming populace treats women as eye candy and service. Just the other day, AtelierHeidi (whom you may know as being married to ProJared if you follow him or the Normal Boots group at all) was harassed and belittled in a gaming store because she asked about D&D books. By no less than three patrons, and then mansplained to by the clerk. I have a ton of female friends who work at similar stores or go to tournaments, etc, and get harassed almost daily, or treated as eye candy, or treated as intruders.

Being dismissive or making excuses for bad, male gaze-pandering decisions is old and awful, and I can't believe people still do it. Cheesecake has its place, but we have to work a lot in the direction of parity and framing to make it okay.

seitan done right > bacon

100 times out of 100

bacon is too greasy anyhow, and has made me sick to my stomach on more than one occasion

I've yet to try seitan. I feel like I would like it. I do enjoy turkey bacon like 100x over pork bacon because it doesn't get greasy. I mean, it's not the same, either, but I know which one I'd prefer to eat.

I think it changes by who cooks something and/or how it's cooked. Pulled chicken with a good BBQ sauce on a bun is up there. So're really nice buffalo wings. I'm also a big fan of the "Shark Fin"-style mushroom soup my local Buddhist Vegetarian place makes (no actual shark fin, obvi).

For drinks, Hong Kong-style cold milk tea, guava or mango juice, or sweet lassi.

Buddy Page added. Basically a friends list page so you can easily contact people.

Recent Topics is now AJAX, so it should update in real time.

Gallery This one we're testing out. May or may not keep it. Useful, I think, to people who want to do things like Game Journals or sell their items (*cough* @Dice and @Dincrest *cough*). If it proves useless or just not a good idea, we'll remove it.

Also, first post in this thread now acts as a changelog, so please check it for updates. :)

Garnet spends like a solid dungeon and change being entirely useless because her cow of a mom got exploded...you call her a strong female, Hidoshi? Cmon...

I'll give you Freya though, and Beatrix to a degree. Eiko is definitely the most fe-meninist of the group though.

Uh, yeah I do. Her entire narrative is about coping with loss and the breaking of illusion. Loss of identity, loss of home, loss of family, and changing who you are and what you care about in radical ways. Strength isn't about not caring or not being vulnerable and shaken. It's about overcoming those things. Flippancy isn't strength.
I'm gonna have to disagree with the Dagger appreciation. I understand she had a MASSIVE level of trauma inflicted upon her in mere moments at one time, but to keep her in the party as a useable character and make her almost entirely useless? No other FF character I can think of pulled something like that. Tidus didn't sit out of the fight against his old man, Noctis doesn't crash and bow out at the end of chapter 1, Sazh didn't give up when his son was turned into a diamond statue in front of him...so how come Garnet goes into full on vegetable mode because her cow fuck mother who was about to kill her just to be a more powerful warmongering dictator ate it because her partner in crime flipped on her? Nope, fuck Garnet.

That's because Tidus and Noctis don't have good writing surrounding their familial relations. Tidus barely emotes about the loss of home or being a stranger in a strange land. Noctis pretty much has generic teen angst about his

and none of it is well-written. Garnet is actually some GOOD writing from the devs, and this attention to humanity one of the key reasons so much of IX is good.

Also, please mark your spoilers.

Japan is notorious for macho bullshit, so yeah. But I really wish we could get the likes of Freyja or Dagger in here. FFIX still has some of the best female characters in the franchise.
