1  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: OK... another teaser site... on: August 14, 2009, 01:41:02 PM
The newest update makes me think this is more PSO/U-related than anything else. The sillouhettes are just too futuristic to be anything else... :(

2  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: What Classic RPG(s) You Would Want Remade Or Recieve A Sequel? on: June 20, 2009, 10:31:20 AM
Remakes of Shining Force II, III, Shining in the Darkness and Shining the Holy Ark would be nice, as would Phantasy Star IV. Steal Princess should fill the Landstalker-shaped hole in my life for now!

I would love to see Panzer Dragoon Saga with current-gen graphics, either a remake or a new title.

Shining Force IV, possibly using the Valkyria Chronicles engine would be lovely, too.

The title I was after (FF VII) actually appeared in the European PS Store anyway, so it's kinda a moot point, now! But it's still good to know that I can almost certainly run anything I download!

Anyone know which version of FF VII it is? I seem to remember at the time that you guys over the pond didn't get Emerald and Ruby Weapons in you version, but us Brit-landers did, but it was corrected for the US Greatest Hits release...
4  The Rest / The Helper Monkey / Extra-regional PSN account advice on: June 04, 2009, 05:03:21 AM
So, I've set up my US PSN account on my English PS3 and I can get into the US PS Store, but there are a couple of things I wanted to know:

Firstly, can I add my debit card to pay for things if, a) it isn't tied to a US address, and, b) is already tied to my UK account?

Secondly, if I were to purchase a PSX title from the US PS Store, would I be able to play it on my PAL machine?

Cheers for any help! I don't really fancy forking out $10 for a game I can't play! :)
5  The Rest / The Helper Monkey / Upgrade advice! on: March 30, 2009, 05:36:10 AM
OK, so here's my current specs:

CPU: Athlon 64 X2 dual core 4400+ 2.21 GHz
GFX: GeForce 8800 GT
RAM: 4x1GB sticks
O/S: Vista Ultimate 64-BIT

So what should I pump some money into? According to Vista itself, the CPU could do with an upgrade, as it only scores 5 on the Vista Experience Rating. This is also backed up by Last Remnant. While I was playing it, the CPU meter read 99-100% the whole time!

My other concern is that my GFX card may be starting to show it's age. It's served me well up until now, but it's beginning to look dangerously close to minimum spec for the most recent games (Last Remnant, Street Fighter IV, etc.)...

I've got about 150-ish to splurge on it, so suggestions, please, ladies and gentles!
6  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Battlestar Galactica Season 4.5 on: February 01, 2009, 12:16:55 PM
C'mon guys, I think they've been trying to make it obvious that Ellen is an older model six... The way she uses her sexuality to exploit Galactica's menfolk, the way she has her own agenda, the way when she was first introduced she simply 'appeared' on a colonial ship with no indication of where she came from... Basically, no, I don't think she's the final Cylon, but I think she is definitely a Cylon (and have suspected so ever since she was introduced!).

As for who the final actually is, I'd guess at either
Starbuck, Roslin or Baltar. Starbuck and Baltar both died and returned to life (Gaius in the mini-series, when he miraculously survived a nuclear strike and Kara's crash on Earth); Roslin and Starbuck have both been following the signal back to Earth; Baltar and Roslin have both been able to 'project' and share in (network with?) Cylon visions (the ones involving Hera); Baltar has always instinctively known if someone is a Cylon (albeit with the voices in his head telling him, but he 'knew' about D'Anna, Tori and Sharon).

As for how the final episodes are going, I'm enjoying them so far. I just hope this isn't the end of Adama yet!

Don't forget, we've had the new Castlevania this year, too!

But I'm going with the Fallout 3/Valkyria Chronicles/Persona 4 contest, with VC just squeezing it...

Eresh herself isn't that great, you already have Zerase to fulfil your magical needs. My final team comprised of the Prince, Lyon, Kyle, Killey, Zerase and Belcoot. To be honest, Belcoot didn't do an awful lot, mere cannon fodder, the real damage came from Zerase's Star Rune and Lyon & the Prince's combo, Creation at level four. Kyle was on healing duty with a Shield Rune and Killey blasting away with Rage and Thunder Runes. Battlefield cast in the first round increased magical damage to stupid levels!

But yeah, three rounds and it was over!

I literally just finished Suikoden V for the first time. Pretty pleased with how it finished, got the 'Lym' ending (all 108 stars, chose to stay and help rebuild). Only issue with it is how damned easy the endgame is, provided you do the Eresh sub-quest as soon as you can (my team of choice didn't level up for the final 15 hours of the game!!!). I mean, taking out the final boss in 3 rounds is pretty lame...
11  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Traditional Strategy & Action on: November 28, 2008, 06:57:35 AM
Strategy RPGs differ from standard ones in the way that combat is implemented. To illustrate this, I'll use the example of Shining Force III. This type of game is normally split into two phases, adventuring/exploring and combat. The adventuring sections will see you exploring towns, recruiting characters, managing your team and purchasing items/equipment, whereas, the combat section sees your team arrayed against the enemy team on a battlefield. Each character gets to move one by one. Each turn generally consists of a movement and an action.

Here are a few pics to help:

This is exploration, walking around a town. Although, sometimes this phase can be reduced to a simple menu listing all the locations in the town, with no actual walking from place to place (See the Front Mission or Final Fantasy Tactics series for an example of this!)

The top image here shows the movement phase of Shining Force III. Note the flashing, highlighted area that shows where a character can move. The second image shows an action being taken.

As for recommended DS s-RPGs? Advance Wars has gotta be worth a look, and Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon for the GBA is excellent. Both nice, entry level titles with a bit of depth once you get used to the genre!

Hope that helps!

Yay! My copy was here when I woke up this morning! Worked it's way to the top of my 'to play' pil,' to be played just as soon as I finish Suikoden V...
13  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: .....sort of new to rpg's on: November 25, 2008, 12:01:00 AM
You should definitely give the strategy RPG titles a try. Both Mega Drive (Genesis) Shining Force titles are available on the virtual console, and well worth the asking price!

And can't you play Gamecube disks on the Wii? Hunt down Tales of Symphonia. There's not a lot more to say other than that! I would normally suggest Skies of Arcadia Legends, too, but if random battles is what's bugging you, Skies has a ridiculously high encounter rate. Either Fire Emblem on the Wii, GC or GBA might be interesting, if you decide s-RPGs are for you, but they are hard as nails!

PC-wise, pick up the two Knights of the Old Republic titles, or if you fancy KotoR minus Star Wars, try Jade Empire or Mass Effect. And if you are seriously thinking about getting into Wow, spending some quality time with Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos & Frozen Throne wouldn't be a bad idea. They've got enough RPG in them to keep me happy, and they're top-notch RTS games to boot.
14  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Batman: The Brave & The Bold on: November 18, 2008, 09:49:45 AM
I think this one is definitely aimed at the fans, having seen the first episode this weekend. The nods to the old Adam West TV series and the previous 'The Batman' cartoon were welcome, and the use of relatively minor characters kinda reflects this, too.

It'll have to go a very long way to out-do the '90s show, but it's a fair attempt!

I got mine winging it's way to good 'ole Blighty from your neighbour to the north.

Damn being English.

Damn it to Heck.

Mind you, waiting a few days for it to arrive form Canada is better than waiting (read: HOPING!) for a PAL release is better!
