The Rest / General Discussions / Resident Evil 5 is "racist"

I edited it myself. As embarrassing as it all ready is, I didn't want to catch hell for not marking spoilers :P
Winback was a lower profile game, and I was only watching my friend play it. I asked him at the time if he noticed what I noticed, to which he replied "I don't see people as being of a different color."
So on the slim chance that someone is actually insisting on killing off black characters, nobody is seeing it that way, which is a good thing.
It's just funny to me personally how I'm always keeping an eye out for the black characters in games to test this damn theory, and then RE5 comes out with NOTHING but black people in it :P If they really are trying to be racist, even I can't help but laugh at the RE5 situation. I am having a hard time staying objective. haha.
edit: I am currently playing F.E.A.R... the point I'm at has a black guy coming in to defuse a bomb. We'll see what happens.

The Rest / General Discussions / Resident Evil 5 is "racist"
|

My dad is black, and I live in a small town full of white people, so I had the following quirk about me as a child. Whenever the token black guy died in a movie, it struck me harder emotionally because the only black person I knew of personally was my own father. Call me crazy, but this is what I've noticed. SHORT LIST OF DEAD BLACK PEOPLE IN VIDEOGAMES -----------------------
Resident Evil 1: Black guy dies to the first zombie in the game.
Resident Evil 2: Black guy cop dies after turning white (zombification).
Metal Gear Solid: Darpa chief dies right away
Metal Gear Solid 2: The only black guy blows up (honorable death at least)
Metal Gear Solid 3 actually speaks directly about Racism, again, honorably.
Winback: Black guy on the squad gets sniped while still on the helicopter, if I recall. --------
I shouldn't notice, but I do. It's racist to notice. Are the jokes about the black guy dying at the start of the movie just a result of people like me keeping a tally, or is there something to it? I've all ready mulled over Resident Evil being racist so I'm not sure what I think of this. At least RE5 won't have one single black person to represent the entire race, only to have him killed. But if my paranoia is correct, then RE5 is almost laughably blatant in it's portrayal of racist sentiment. But, it's not like a videogame can lynch me. I'll buy it, and I'll like it. Mental masturbation.

Media / Miscellaneous Games / Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition

I finished the game yesterday. Now, I liked Red Steel's control scheme, but I think RE4's method is even better. I now have high hopes for future 3rd and first person shooters on the Wii.

The Rest / The Helper Monkey / ATI cards and widescreen monitors
|
on: June 12, 2007, 03:34:31 PM
|
|
I have a widescreen LCD monitor that, in itself, doesn't have any options for scaling while maintaining an aspect ratio.
Basically, I want to play older PC games requiring a 4:3 aspect ratio, and I want black bars to appear on the sides of my widescreen so I don't get a fattened image.
So far, I've found that nVidia cards have had an option to do this for years, yet I can't seem to find an option in the ATI Catalyst control center.
I've got an X800 series ATI GTO2, PCI-e (256mb).
Does anyone know of any software that could perhaps handle this for me? Am I just blind to the option in ATI Catalyst?

The Rest / General Discussions / Pamida had Zanzarah for $5
|
on: June 12, 2007, 01:43:45 PM

|
The population where I live is 2600 or so. We don't have a Wal-mart for 30 miles, but we do have a local Pamida.
I was thinking of going to buy F.E.A.R since I've seen that game almost everywhere I go. I also wanted Mortal Kombat for Wii. I figured these games were old enough to be there.
I go in , and I see Zanzarah: The Hidden Portal for $4.99. This is the foreign fairy pokemon game with the Quake 2 battle system. I couldn't even remember the name of this game a week ago when I tried to remember, and here it was.
I also saw an import of Jump! Superstars for DS. Someone had written "this is a Japanese import. ALL TEXT IN JAPANESE; will work in US DS." I looked for Mortal Kombat and there was an empty space where someone had written "Mortal Kombat Armageddon. Sorry, sold out." Luckily I found a copy hidden elsewhere, but...
When the hell did Pamida get with the program? I heard something about Shopko owning them... are all Shopko's this "in tune?" Is this how the underdogs fight back against Wal-Mart?

The Rest / General Discussions / Why Mario is "cool" and Sonic is not...
|
on: May 08, 2007, 11:20:29 PM

If it were the Friend's cast in Mario Kart, the powerups would be unfamiliar. Mario has a large assortment of power ups that are pretty versatile. I think the same is true for Zelda and Metroid, if not every videogame franchise.
I don't know if that's why Mario has such an aura about him or not though. How many ways can you twist Sonic's rings and loop-de-loops into games without making up a ton of new elements?

Media / Multiplayer RPGs / Starcraft MMO?
|
on: May 08, 2007, 09:16:39 PM

I still wish they would make World of Starcraft. It would be nice to have a sci-fi MMO as well as a fantasy MMO, but given the quality of Blizzard's games, they could make it a bunny fetish MMO and people would still abandon their personal tastes and jump to it. Basically, I agree that another MMORPG would pit them against themselves.
Shattered Galaxy from Nexus basically is an MMORTS verson of Starcraft. I think it's free to play if you're curious as to how such a game would operate. I'd rather not see Starcraft incarnated that way, but again, even if it were Starcraft: Bunnies it would still probably kick ass. I mean that as objectively as possible.

Media / Single-Player RPGs / Bethesda buys the Fallout License

I think this excellent news. Has anyone here played S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl? I haven't finished it yet, and while I'm very pleased with it, I find myself thinking "Man, if only this game were more like Oblivion."
The game has all ready been compared to Oblivion, and given it's success thus far, I really am not surprised that Bethesda would like to get its hands on Fallout.
If you don't know, S.T.A.L.K.E.R is a first person shooter with open ended gameplay and light RPG elements. It feels like Oblivion, only much much smaller and less complex.

Get the DS.
Red Steel and Zelda are must haves for the Wii, reviews be damned.
If you have friends, add Monkey Ball, otherwise Trauma Center. I wouldn' t think going all out will maximize your experience... You don't need much to enjoy your Wii. I play my Wii when I get -urges- if that makes sense. When I play Rogue Galaxy or another RPG it feels more like a focused task that I *must* do, at least when compared to playing something on Wii. I actually haven't beaten any of my Wii games, but Zelda is changing that.
The DS is perfect if you're a busy person. There are the generic portability benefits that apply to the PSP as well, but you can just close the DS and it'll go into sleep mode and won't die on you thanks to its longer battery life. Maybe that applies to the PSP too actually. Nevermind.

Killer7 = most underrated game ever
No More Heroes = definite must buy
I noticed that the main character in No More Heroes is named Travis. I wonder if there is any connection to the Killer7 Travis. Not that I expect a concrete connection... maybe Suda51 just likes the name Travis, or it could be something like the Cids in Final Fantasy.
Final Fantasy has Cids

Aren't there more pop culture or otherwise 'reality-literal' lines in the game too? I thought I heard that somewhere. That's kind of a turn off for me.
I loved it in the Lunar games, but those games didn't take themselves seriously in the first place.

Media / Miscellaneous Games / I'm gonna be broke the rest of this month!

During the RPG drought, I decided to use all of my excess cash to rent an apartment with someone. I allocated my funds away from games yet now there are many that I want.
I'm aiming so far back in the release dates that I feel like a 2nd class citizen.
When I lived at home I bought every half decent release. I bought almost every early DS game (including Ping Pals) just so I could have a hobby. Now I have no money for the high quality games... well, I can afford one here and there, but the gluttonous spending days are fewer and farther between.
