Retro is great, as you can talk in depth about the story without worrying too much about spoilers. It brings back memories and is good to hear what others thoughts are.  Not to mention other Podcasts are doing something simliar, like Roleplayers Realm from Gamepro is doing their Pillars of RPGs which show the foundation of RPGs. They also talked about Phantasy star. It's funny how both podcasts managed to do about the same thing. Especially if there isn't much going on in terms of new games coming out.

Quality as usual.  Always look forward to the podcasts. You all seem like a good group of people and is always great to listen to.  Wish you had one every week!  Thanks again for getting this one out.

It was great, though I wish they would have spread out the epilogue a little more. That could have been another good 20 minutes and would tie everything up.

I find they handled the final battle in the movie than she did in the book. Although:

Bellatrix vs Mrs. Weasley should have been more epic, some of the deaths should have been focused on more.  Especially as more of a shock for those who didn't read the book.

Honestly, iOS is alright for games, but I find it hard to grasp me like most PSP/DS RPGs do.  It's more useful for a small diversion although it is nice to have it always on you in the form of your phone and all, but still.

Random Encounters are just not necessary anymore.  The reason they exist is due to technology limitations back in the day. Now it should be enemeies on screen like Tales, Arc Rise Fantasia, etc.

I also agree that FFX battle system was great.  It gets rid of one of my biggest pet peeves in RPGs.  Here are 12 unique and great characters, but hey, you can only use 3 for the entire game at one time.  Almost every time you leave out a majority of the characters, FFX had it right where all your characters are there, the system was good enough to support fighting your entire party.  I wish more would do it like that, or just have a limited number of main characters.

For the record:

Xenogears: A tremendous achievement of storytelling that (much like Eva) ran out of funding and time, resulting in half of an awesome game and half of something... else...

Kingdom Hearts:  I loved the first game because it was you and Donald Duck on a magical adventure.  KH2 had some great gameplay and awesome set-piece moments, but it felt like the series got away from the core roots that made it so whimsical and fun.  As of late, the series has been milked and processed to the point of complete garbage, and I'm not even sure if a third core entry could right the ship.

TWEWY:  That shit is awful.  Seriously, though, the gameplay just baffled me and I had no interest in the main character.

Xenogears: I had no problem with the second disc, as a whole the game was great from start to finish(though I do agree the sewer portion was a little lame), the only thing that pissed me off was that the game ended as Episode 5. While Xenosaga did come out and was overall a good somewhat successor(it had a lame ep 2), it still didn't completely encompass the greatness of the first game.  So unfortunately due to all the licensing and sales, I have to reluctantly refer to Xenogears Perfect Works, have you heard about/read that?

Kingdom Hearts: I think maybe I just like Nomura's style, but I found KH 1/2 to be highly enjoyable.  Birth by sleep as well.  Coded, 358/2, and Chain of Memories were all pretty bad though.  The story did go over the top, but I still enjoyed it. I think when they finally do get to number III, it might end up being alright.  I think they just need to make III then end it with possibly wrapping up every single mystery they have, even if they have to retcon, but there should be a definitive ending. If they make any more it should be a blank slate, and possibly use the disney characters and use their worlds to make original stories(which could go horribly horribly wrong...)

TWEWY: This is by far my favorite DS game, maybe it is the XL you played it on(I played it on lite), but I had absolutely no problems with the combat system.  I found it rather engaging to go back and forth and it kept me in battles more than most other RPG battle system. It's basically I had to pay attention or I would die.  The setting of the game was great, I'll admit Neku was a little whiny at the beginning but after seeing what is really going on and after all the plot twists, it was rather a unique and amazing story that isn't really seen that much.

It's a shame that the more unique titles like Mirror's Edge get cast aside and not even a fair chance is given.

Wait... what? Before that game's release, I heard nothing but how it was going to revolutionize gaming and it was going to be the greatest game of all time! But at it's release, I heard nothing but how completely broken the control system was and how boring the gameplay was, and mostly by the same people. I've never played it, so I can't seriously comment, but it sounds like it bombed because it had serious problems. Funny though, it got remade for iPhone/iPad, and it's one of the most popular/well-liked games on the system.

So I really don't follow you: it's a game that got lots of recognition, was deemed flawed, then re-released with a different control scheme, and became a hit. How the HELL does that translate to "not even a fair chance is given"?

Broken Control system?  Everything about the game was great.  Some people got motion sickness from it, but that's about it.  It's one of the more original and entertaining games this gen.

I meant original games in general, but Mirror's Edge was considered a flop when it came out, and it fell below their predictions and the series was pretty much cast aside in which we lost hope of a sequel.  Only recently it's been shown that they are interested in a sequel, this doesn't happen for a lot of the more unique games out there.  Games like Demon Soul's lucked out because it exceeded expectations.  It will be curious to see how a game like Catherine will fair.

But to your question, you answered your own question within your post. You haven't played the game, why is that? Why did you not give it a fair chance? Is it because the controls are apparently broken(which they weren't, I owned it day 1 on the PS3)?

Also the iOS version is nowhere near the normal version, and of course people will buy it for that seeing as the investment is only like $5 compared to $60  I just checked and it's only $.99 now.

The original Grandia

Breath of Fire(any except DQ)

Dragon Force

Shining of the Holy Ark

Albert Odyssey

Tales of Destiny

I'd love to see the SaGa 3 DS remake make it to the states... though that will never happen.

I'm sure there are a ton more, but I will leave it at that for now.

Turned base battles are good, as long as it's a good system.  I don't see a game like Persona being anything but turned based.  However they should just banish random encounters altogether if they do a turn-based system.

I don't feel turned based games will truly die.  If they do, then it will be a sad sad day.
