who decided that there shouldn't be a pause button

I'd like to ask how you expect there to be a pause button in an online game?  Is the system just supposed to pause every player's game all at the same time?

And Automaps are pointless in Demon's Souls, it's almost all straight paths.  Maps would also detract from the tension of the levels, which is a HUGE part of why DS was a good game to begin with.

i'd like to add that a pause button would ruin the tension and joy of victory of every boss battle. if i could've paused during flame lurker beating him would've been a lot easier cause i found that i'd get over zealous half way though the fight go berserker rage and die. if i could have paused and took a breather to relieve anxiety it'd been quicker. the victories wouldn't have felt as sweet though.

after thinking it over i think this is the system seller i've been waiting for. i'm getting a wii instead of a wii u cause there are some game cube games i wanna play too, namely skies of arcadia.

Nintendo has already started removing Gamecube support from the Wii.  Be very careful about which model you get.

It MAY be easiest to buy used, but an easy way to tell: If the system is set up vertically on the box then it has GC support. If it's horizontal then it lacks GC support.

Similarly, I think the Mario Kart bundles are guaranteed to have GC support as well as the red Mario ones if you can find them, whereas the non-red NSMB bundles lack it I believe.

thanks for the heads up i'd've been so pissed had i got one without and had to go through the hassle of trying to trade up or return.

I think they change depending on a system's age. Admittedly they'd probably be more lenient with Vita than prior platforms just because it's THAT much more important to get support with tablets and smart phones a very plausible threat and Nintendo in a position to curbstomp them like everyone else prior, but the PS2 got a lot of stuff really late on like Chulip that's hard to image making it in the earlier years, and I think it was mentioned somewhere SCEA just doesn't care anymore about approval on the PSP, they're not even charging royalties according to an NISA interview.

Now that is certainly interesting.I wonder how long NIS takes advantage of this.

i've been curious about this title i thought it sounded pretty good. what sort of battle system is in this again?

Its a strategy RPG in which you move, attack, heal or defend based on your movement bar.You control these mini-mechas each with distinct abilities and strengths. The combat shifts between land and air combat depending on what kind of boss fight you have.

However the bread and butter from Sakura Wars comes from socializing and spending time with the characters in the game. The stronger your relationship becomes, the more battle bonuses will be granted to your companions during battle.

So it has some Valkyria Chronicles elements, some Persona 3 ideas and the music is a mix of jazz, some J-pop and some orchestral at the end.

i hope that i can still find a copy. should've bought the new copy when i had the chance.
201  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: What are your favorite innovations in RPGs? on: December 04, 2011, 06:52:12 PM
That comment you made about shifting turn based to real time combat really antagonizes me. I am sick of the notion that real time combat systems are a replacement of evolution of turn based ones.Turn based combat has the potential to be incredibly strategic and tactical. It's a genre difference.

Same here. First witnessed when Bioware replaced genius battle system from GoldBox AD&D games with their pausable/realtime combat in Baldur`s Gate. It was not bad, but a far cry from total control and real tactics of SSI titles. Ok I`m a die-hard TB fan, but don`t mind a well done Action RPG - as long as it doesn`t ask me to control multiple party members at the same time without any pause button. How on earth are you supposed to compete against computer juggling all that? (Ok, Korean Starcrafters might, but thats way outta my league)

I just find that Turn Based combat can be dry.  Only a few games use it super well.  Grandia II, LoH to some extent, FFX (especially in terms of speed), and the occasional tactics game (I'm actually not a big fan of VC).  I consider real-time a bit of innovation, or at the very least a logical next step to some extent.

Consider it a personal taste for active time combat, than a poo-poo to turn-based.

i kinda feel like the same as Dice. when i read the topic, AB systems came to mind. now that's not so say i don't like TB cause i really do. i've said it on other threads, i think that strategy is required for both to be engaging. i think ffXIII could've used an AB system to their credit if the strategy was there. i mean that's what kept me going through SO games even though the characters are obnoxious.

i really liked the combat VC i thought that semi real time was pretty innovative before demon souls that was the last game i beat.

i may be a little biased, i love strategy games. i miss the old games like pools of radiance, curse of the azure bonds based on AD&D rules that shit was cool.

i think one innovation that i know keeps me busy is customizing characters. if i'm gonna be starring at something for hours i'd like it to look nice. i also really liked push turns in nocturne it definitely helped keep random battles from getting tedious. i think my favorite innovation though is autosave one at the begining of a dungeon and one before the boss fights is almost mandatory.

If you can go in the Tomb of the Giants with a Dragon Slayer Bow and a Divine Axe it can also help you a lot. I wish you the best of luck if you want to get the Large Divine Ember though.

Ha.  You pretty much have to suicide for that Ember.  I got one of them down once and I was proud of myself for that.

that's how i got it. i jumped down, rolled around, picked it up and died immediately after.

for all the hype this got i'm so so glad it's coming to NA. between xenoblade and skyward sword i will actually have some firm reasons to get a wii aside from paper mario and the like. the best part is i'll be back to work so i'll be able to afford the black wii i've had my eye on. worst part is i'll be back to work so i won't be able to play it as much.

i wonder if it'd be worth the wait for wiiU?

204  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Getting psyched for Sakura Wars ~So Long, My Love~ on: December 02, 2011, 09:02:40 PM
It's a strategy RPG, somewhat akin to a less evolved version of Valkyria Chronicles actually.

i'm a total sucker for strategy rpgs and valkiria chronicles happens to be the last one i beat so i'm even more sold on it now.

206  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Merged Final Fantasy XIII-2 Thread on: November 30, 2011, 09:44:44 PM
read this thread from beginning to end today. quite a few lol's were had.

when i think of ff13 i think of crystal pepsi or coke two. it might've been more palatable had it not been associated with the brand. i think of dragon age one and two as well.

i guess for me, i think i like what i think they were trying to do but i'm not real happy with the result. the biggest disconnect for me was the battle system. i thought i'd like the faster pace. i thought that might make it more engaging. it didn't really have that effect on me though. when i first heard about it i was under the impression that it wasn't going to be as big of a departure from series. i figured it'd be like ff12, 10 or 10-2 in that if they messed around with things it'd still be tolerable. those were my only points of comparison. i kinda feel like they were trying to get an actiony feel from a menu based system. for a franchise that was built on turn based that frenetic pace just didn't sit right. i felt like i was pushing buttons fast for very little control and really the same old strategy every time. it didn't do anything for me.
the story and characters would've had to do overtime to make up for game play i felt was lacking depth. but the story asks me to suspend disbelief too much in the sense that the tropes were laid on so thick i didn't really relate to any one of them. that and the fact the story just kept pushing you along into battle after battle on a system that wasn't super engaging kinda did me in early. by the time i got to gran pulse i didn't really care anymore. the linear dungeons and lack of towns/shops and exploration was just further alienation from franchise staples.

now all that said i can't really imagine 13-2 being any better without an amazing overhaul and i really can't see that happening. i'll wait for 15 and hope for the best.

207  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Dark Souls on: November 29, 2011, 11:53:23 AM
I'm almost done! Only 3 more areas to go. I think I enjoyed Demon's Soul more because it was the first time I ever played a game like this. Dark Souls does do a lot of things better, but I'm finding myself just wanting to get it over with. Maybe the fact that I went from Demon's Soul straight to this had something to do with it.

i did the same thing and i kinda feel the same way. i'm not as far as you i think so i'm not as eager to finish. i think that i like demon's souls more in some aspects and dark souls more in others. i don't think i've been as nervous about bosses in dark souls as much. i think the flame lurker was my favorite in the series so far because it was difficult but if you were smart and vigilant you could beat it by yourself. flame lurker and king alant were the only enemies i had phantoms help with and mostly they died. in dark souls it's easier to get humanity to be alive and summon phantoms. the phantoms i've summoned have destroyed the bosses in seconds. i just think demons souls had a tighter balance to it. i like the bonfire set up in dark souls more. that reminds me, i wonder if they took the giants that were supposed to be in the broken arch stone in demon's souls and just added it to dark souls.
208  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Dark Souls on: November 29, 2011, 11:11:31 AM
the spots i noticed the change in AI was mostly in the undead burg. enemies don't see you coming from as far away as they did and they stay put till your closer. the positions of enemies changed a bit too. it probably is a lot easier for beginners now. i kinda liked the way it was. the one enemy change that i like is the crossbowmen above the minotaur are moved to the side of the ladder so the one doesn't hit you with a sword every time you get to the top anymore, that was annoying. but now they can't see you that well so they're dead before they shoot/swing at you. i sorta feel it's too nerfed.

i killed lautrec and smough over the weekend. i can't think of an npc killing i've enjoyed as much.
209  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: My goal starting November: beat 1 RPG a month on: November 24, 2011, 12:37:38 PM
i don't think i could finish one rpg a month if i tried. even though i don't have a wife or kids during the summer months when i get done with work i have a couple hours before i fall asleep, so i don't make much headway in games. i work as a bike mechanic so i have a few fortunate months in the winter off while the season is slow. i'm slowly busting my way though dark souls. i'll probably be playing dark souls till febuary. i hope i'm closed to finished by then so i can focus on kingdoms of amalur. i try to stick to one thing at a time unless i'm super frustrated.
i have a pretty big backlog. wild arms is on the stack. i missed a lot of the ps1 era. the only ps1 games i remember playing before owning a ps2 was chrono cross, metal gear solid and FF7. none of which have i finished which is just sad. i think i owe it to myself to take a break from new games some time soon.
210  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ninokuni (Ghibli + Level 5 RPG) going PS3 on: November 24, 2011, 11:40:09 AM
it looks like it's one part turn based, one part real time. if that's the case i hope it's done right. i really like action based combat when it's not just hack and slash till dead. by the same token i like a turn based as long as there is some involved strategy going on. either way, for me strategy is the make or break element of this game.
