Well I got the constant PC crashes to go away with some help from the internet (i could find no helpful advice from any official forum though) and I have had a chance to play some more.

Great story and exploration.  I love just wandering around and finding stuff in nooks and crannies.   I like the War Room concept aswell, reminds me of the Suikoden base.  I wish more games would add a Strategic layer.  Tactics Ogre or Fire Emblem where your long term choices have effects.

On the down side I still think the combat is atrocious.   I see they have removed the Tactics options, dumbed down character growth and skill trees.  In any serious fight im having trouble getting the characters to do what i want and its frustrating.   I actually think Dragon Age 2 for all its faults had a better combat system. 

I'm going to reduce the difficulty to normal and see if i get on better with real time battles, play as an action game.   Are most people playing this on PS4?

Heard some of the music which sounded great and I like these old school dungeon crawlers so will put this on the radar.   At the minute though there's too much else coming out at the same time!

This came out today here in the UK and I picked it up on PC.   Unfortunately first impressions are a bit disappointing.   Im playing as a dual wielding rogue and the combat feels like I'm playing an action game.  I have to  move around in real time and keep my mouse cursor on an enemy to hit them?   Feels even more gamey than DA2, and quite fiddly.  I saw the Parry skill on the skill tree, tried it out a bit.   Wondered if the AI is clever enough to use it properly if I'm controlling another character.   Maybe this experience would be better on a console with a gamepad.     Then I had a look at the tactical mode, can see what Rob was saying, it was difficult to see the enemies without loads of scrolling the screen around.   Hopefully i will get used to it with a bit more play as it looks and sounds great.   

Gameplay aside I'm also getting a Crash to desktop during cutscenes (directx related), which looking at the forums seems to be an ongoing issue for lots of folks.   If that turns into a regular crash issue I might have to go back to Jagged Alliance 2 until they patch it.   The joys of pc gaming!

Ive put a few hours into this and yep its great.   A good mix of combat, puzzles and plenty of secrets to find.    Also its quite challenging even on Normal mode..

I have been keeping my eye on this one, but havent picked it up because of the games backlog.

One thing i was very interested in was the co-op aspect as that seemed like a real innovation in an old school style rpg like this.   Will be interested to hear what you guys think in the next podcast.

Prior to E3 i was wishfully thinking that i would love to see another Advance Wars game maybe on Wii U.  I didnt really expect  anything so was plenty pleased when this one was talked about.

Valkyria Chronicles and XCOM influences and made by Intelligent Systems (i love those guys games).   So I will definately be keeping an eye on this one.

I'm really hopeful about this one and the other big kickstarters like wasteland2 and tides of numenera.   They have decent budgets can take their time (up to a point) and tell the story they want to without publisher interference.   The Baldurs Gate influence is there but thats not a bad thing since that was one of the greatest rpgs ever..

Im really looking forward to the story side of these games aswell.   Much as i love Jrpgs they tend to be infested with anime tropes and generic storylines that i end up playing them for the gameplay in spite of the story.

I ended up finishing act V on one of the lower difficulties (expert) i think and then Adventure Mode unlocks for all your characters. great stuff.

Like everyone one else am finding it a lot of fun.  It will keep me popping back to the game every now and then for a hack and slash fest and a bit of co-op, whereas before the expansion i hadnt played it at all for months.  so well done to Blizzard for a really good expansion.

Ive got my eye on the Chaos Reborn kickstarter at the minute.   I loved the original game back in 1985, it was an awesome hotseat multiplayer turn based strategy.  This remake looks like its gonna have the classic turn based battles with more single player Rpg elements so a bit like a hybrid Strategy RPG.  The creator Julian Gollop has made some of my favourite games over the years (Chaos, Rebelstar, Laser Squad, the Original XCOM, Ghost Recon Shadow Wars on the 3DS) so I'm super confident when he finishes it will be worth the wait.

The HP decrease upon death is a holdover from Demon's Souls.  I'm happy it returned, personally, since it really teaches you not to take risks.  If you're worried, you can get a Ring of Binding which stops your HP from decreasing below 75%, which should be enough for most things in a normal game, really.  I don't remember where I got it, but it was pretty early on.

My problem with it is when I am ready to try the boss, if it takes me a lot of attempts to kill him, it gets harder and harder with each death.   Im not really taking dumb risks, im having an attempt on a boss maybe trying different tactics in order to learn what works.   Also part of the problem is that im no pro at DS :) and i dont use guides as I think that spoils the essence of the game. 

I got to my first boss yesterday the Last Giant, Ive had about 10 attempts and come close but havent killed him yet.  Keep getting stepped on!  He does seem an easy boss, i just keep making 1 mistake and thats usually enough to kill me.

Having said the above i did get the white co-op stone and I think that is the answer.  I put my sign down as a hollow (with 50%  health cap) and helped out a couple of players to clear the level.   Its a good way of sharpening the skills and at the end when i was sent back I was a human again with some nice souls gained.   So if my repeated failures at killing the boss knock my health down too much, i'll do some jolly cooperation to become human without needing loads of effigies.   

I've always played offline before as i despise pvp, but i found the co-op really fun, so i would recommend it to anyone having trouble like me.

You know you are playing Dark Souls when you die in the tutorial section :)

The postie delivered my copy yesterday.  I was feeling quite confident after finally completing Dark Souls 1 a couple of weekends ago but i am finding it hard going atm.   I'm not really sure why, but enemy AI does seem more aggressive and they seem to move faster. 

My biggest concern is the losing of health when you die.  Mine went down to about 50%, so 1 mistake was fatal.  Its hard to get very far in that state and I really dont like this design choice.  Death is punishment enough.   How common are those effigy items?  Reckon i might need a load of them.
