1  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics? on: July 29, 2015, 03:27:24 PM
To answer this question i have to be a bit of a berk and say neither - play the remake of Tactics Ogre instead.

Its got the Game of Thrones like story of FFT with some great gameplay innovations for a turn based game, like the Chariot system which lets you undo a turn if you've messed up and shot and killed one of your party members with a crossbow ...

Really enjoying this one, its the reason I've barely touched Bloodborne.   Interesting story and characters, (be warned there is a lot of reading if you don't like that in your games)  and some great fights.    In fact the tactical combat made me think - shame Dragon Age Inquisition couldn't do a better tactical combat view like this.

All the drama over the backer created limerick is a nonsense.   The changes Obsidian have made do not impact the game play in any way and i think they have handled things in a sensitive and classy way.    Also i have had no problems with bugs or crashes at all, so well done Obsidian.

My main issue with all of these Souls games is the repetition.   I hate the fact that i can be playing for 30-45 mins then die and effectively lose all progress.   If i can open a shortcut up or get to a bonfire/lantern then dying doesn't seem so bad because at least i'm making some progress and that's great.   But if i can't do that then when i die i feel i've just wasted my time.  I never completed Demon's Souls because of the lack of checkpoints and I was glad of the bonfires in DS 1 and 2.   Is Bloodborne checkpoint lite like Demons or more like the Dark Souls series bonfires?   I take it "the kill all the mobs multiple times and they disappear" mechanic is gone from BB aswell?  When i got stuck on a boss i quite liked clearing out all the mobs so it made for easier repeat boss attempts.

Played a few hours with Bloodborne and I see what everyone is saying about the combat.  Of course I dislike it at the moment because I'm so used to the Shield being there (i was never skilled enough to parry much).   Definately a lot to learn, by the end of my session the gun was coming in handy to stop dogs ripping my throat out.

I enjoyed Fire Emblem Awakening and am looking forward to another one.   Having said that i was hoping for some changes to the game mechanics and it doesnt look like much is different with this new one.   My main issues with the series are Permadeath and the lack of interesting battle maps.   Too many battles seem to be about wiping out waves upon waves of enemy reinforcements rather than a specific map objective.   Permadeath is no good if it just results in the player turning off and restarting the map.  It also seems counterproductive in a game where one of the great things is the character relationship building.  Would be better off with a different penalty such as being wounded (and unavailable) for a number of battles.   Also 2016 seems a long way off.
5  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Suikoden 1 and 2 finally coming to psn. on: December 07, 2014, 01:11:40 AM
Suikoden 1 wasn't ever available on the EU PSN, so those of us over here had to create a US account to get hold of it.    I've never played Suikoden 2 or 3 so I like this announcement.

I replayed Suikoden 1 recently and even though it looks very dated some of the concepts in the game like the 1 vs 1 duels and large army battles do add loads of melodrama.

edit: actually not sure if this is coming to EU or not...

Well I got the constant PC crashes to go away with some help from the internet (i could find no helpful advice from any official forum though) and I have had a chance to play some more.

Great story and exploration.  I love just wandering around and finding stuff in nooks and crannies.   I like the War Room concept aswell, reminds me of the Suikoden base.  I wish more games would add a Strategic layer.  Tactics Ogre or Fire Emblem where your long term choices have effects.

On the down side I still think the combat is atrocious.   I see they have removed the Tactics options, dumbed down character growth and skill trees.  In any serious fight im having trouble getting the characters to do what i want and its frustrating.   I actually think Dragon Age 2 for all its faults had a better combat system.

I'm going to reduce the difficulty to normal and see if i get on better with real time battles, play as an action game.   Are most people playing this on PS4?

Heard some of the music which sounded great and I like these old school dungeon crawlers so will put this on the radar.   At the minute though there's too much else coming out at the same time!

This came out today here in the UK and I picked it up on PC.   Unfortunately first impressions are a bit disappointing.   Im playing as a dual wielding rogue and the combat feels like I'm playing an action game.  I have to  move around in real time and keep my mouse cursor on an enemy to hit them?   Feels even more gamey than DA2, and quite fiddly.  I saw the Parry skill on the skill tree, tried it out a bit.   Wondered if the AI is clever enough to use it properly if I'm controlling another character.   Maybe this experience would be better on a console with a gamepad.     Then I had a look at the tactical mode, can see what Rob was saying, it was difficult to see the enemies without loads of scrolling the screen around.   Hopefully i will get used to it with a bit more play as it looks and sounds great.

Gameplay aside I'm also getting a Crash to desktop during cutscenes (directx related), which looking at the forums seems to be an ongoing issue for lots of folks.   If that turns into a regular crash issue I might have to go back to Jagged Alliance 2 until they patch it.   The joys of pc gaming!

Ive put a few hours into this and yep its great.   A good mix of combat, puzzles and plenty of secrets to find.    Also its quite challenging even on Normal mode..

Dont know if i will be able to cope without a shield!

Though a blunderbuss as a replacement does sound pretty cool.

Just read an article on the game systems on Rock Paper Shotgun...Resistance to purchasing it is weakening :)

I have been keeping my eye on this one, but havent picked it up because of the games backlog.

One thing i was very interested in was the co-op aspect as that seemed like a real innovation in an old school style rpg like this.   Will be interested to hear what you guys think in the next podcast.

Prior to E3 i was wishfully thinking that i would love to see another Advance Wars game maybe on Wii U.  I didnt really expect  anything so was plenty pleased when this one was talked about.

Valkyria Chronicles and XCOM influences and made by Intelligent Systems (i love those guys games).   So I will definately be keeping an eye on this one.

I'm really hopeful about this one and the other big kickstarters like wasteland2 and tides of numenera.   They have decent budgets can take their time (up to a point) and tell the story they want to without publisher interference.   The Baldurs Gate influence is there but thats not a bad thing since that was one of the greatest rpgs ever..

Im really looking forward to the story side of these games aswell.   Much as i love Jrpgs they tend to be infested with anime tropes and generic storylines that i end up playing them for the gameplay in spite of the story.

This might be a good reason to pick up a ps4 ...
