Media / Single-Player RPGs / The Suikoden games (opinion thread)

Currently I have Suikoden 1,3,4,5 but I haven't completed any of them and actually haven't even played 3 or 4 yet. (only reason I got 4 was so that I would have the complete main series if I decided to get 2). Anyway most people say the 2nd game is the best followed by the 1st and the 5th was a comeback with the 4th game in the series being the worst. I don't know much about 3 but anyway Why is this? I would like to read some opinions on why people think which games are best from best to worst order and why (without spoilers) that is. From things that are unique to RPG's like the first game having a base where all the people who joined the liberation army chill. (I thought that was really cool and unique building an army and also not all characters fight some are just support characters. Another example could possibly the whole rune system. Just things in each game that gamers felt the developers made good and original choices compared to others that might have been just down right dumb. Besides everyones opinions on the games some sample questions could be why is the 4th game the worst? Why do people consider the 5th game a comeback and so on and so forth. Please make the responses neat and in this format
Suikoden: reasons explaining why liked the game and what made it stand out and different compared to the others
Suikoden II: Same as above
Suikoden III: Same as above
Suikoden IV: Same as above
Suikoden V: Same as above
PS: Try not and get to in depth story wise and also please list favorite first and go down from their also main games only not side stories or any games that aren't numbered
Really interested in reading some of these responses thanks

Another question basically I attached a fire rune to the character luc but for some reason under rune there isn't a fire spell. He's in the back row and can't attack does he need to be in the front, and if so does that mean when he attacks regularly there will be additional damage with fire because like I said it's not showing up under rune and I thought rune was basically magic

Yeah I forgot I made this topic. Anyway, do runes run out? what's the number next to them and why do they go down? also during battle once in a while the rune command is still blacked out even though a character has it equipped....doesn't really make sense

Ok so whats the deal with runes? I just don't understand them and the game doesn't really explain them. I'm not that far into the game (about 3 hours into the first game) but how do you use them? Do you just attach them to weapons? Are their different types? How do you use them? help please and thanks

But how could you tell what is what? For example under the main character under Rune it says soul eater in the first box the second box says deadly fingertips with a 3 all the way to the right and when I press X on the character it makes a sound that sounds like a duck. Under items under some characters I have a thunder rune piece and a wind rune piece but I can't use them at a blacksmith. What the heck is up with that? Does the game explain runes later on or no? I'm only about 3 hours in by the way

So after I completed Grandia 2 I decided to move onto Suikoden (the first game) to complete. I'm having trouble understanding what runes are/do and whats the point of attaching them to a weapon. Also I understand their are different types of runes? Please explain thanks

Poopy. I'm about 23 hours in and the game really hasn't picked up. I thought the story would be better because people tend to comment on how great the series is. I have the 3rd game as well haven't played it yet. I know the Grandia games are also suppose to be about gameplay mainly the battle system. The way characters learn magic and skills is pretty interesting and not bad I'll give it that. The battle system is good but not a huge gameplay difference compared to other games. I'd probably pick this over a traditional turn based battle system if this battle system was in more game series and was a mainstay. But if it was I'd also play traditional turn based RPG's. It's not amazing or totally new to differentiate itself from other RPG's with similar battle systems. Whats the big hype about the series?

I read parts of that topic already. Also I'm currently playing a bunch of games. I know the Fable games aren't big on story but the gameplay is fun and around here people say the 2nd one is the worst one. I thought the 3rd one was interesting because the player becomes a king later on in the game. Whats so great about the 2nd game

I have a Gamestop giftcard that I don't really know what to do with. I was gonna save it for when Final Fantasy XIII-2 comes out butI'm not too sure. I might just pick up Fable III and Mass Effect for Xbox 360 because they're both pretty cheap and not bad games. I had Fable III but sold it before I finished it. I have Fable The Lost Chapters on PC and I thought Fable III was a pretty fun game but I never played the second game. I have Mass Effect for PC but it doesn't run well so I was gonna get the Xbox 360 version to try it out. How is it also how does Fable II compare with the other games in the series. On another note how are the two new Pokemon games for DS any good or not thanks

Yeah that part at disc 2 or whatever. I read and searched a lot into the problem. I tried that opening up and closing the disc tray maybe 4 different tries didn't work though. How many tries did it take to work just wondering
