I played Ys vs Sora no Kiseki and Ys Origin today.  A lot.  Ate leftovers.  No gym.  Crazy lazy.  Much Ys.  Very wow.
243  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: RPGFan Member's Game of the Year - 2013 Edition! on: December 14, 2013, 08:55:04 PM
Are you ready for some hideous combinations of colored fonts?  Well if not, I'm sorry.*

2013 GOTY - The Last of Us

I wasn't on board with it's bull**** for the first few hours, but then it comes together and becomes a compelling experience through to the end. Spectacular finish as well.  Makes me more excited to see what Naughty Dog can do on new hardware, presumably the PS4.

Runners-up - Tomb Raider ; Rayman Legends ; Tales of Xillia

My favorite 2013 action-adventure game, platformer, and RPG respectively.  Was impressed with the TR reboot.  Rayman was a delight that got me interested in the rest of the series.  I really enjoyed Xillia's combat wrinkles and cast, I suppose moreso than the rest of the forum.

Not-2013 GOTY - Persona 4

I was Persona-obsessed for the first half of 2013.  Finished Persona 4 twice in five months.  I love the changes made from Persona 3 and I was on board with the story and characters from start to finish.  Unlike some people I appreciated the less grim-dark story.  I am WAY pumped for Persona 5.**

Runners-up - Ys: The Oath in Felghana ; Tales of Vesperia ; Donkey Kong Country Returns

I played these three in 2013 and had a ****ing blast.  Very recommended to fans of one-character action RPGs, group action RPGs, and platformers respectively.

2013 Games I Wish I Could Play - The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds ; Ys: Memories of Celceta

I don't own a 3DS or a Vita and as such I can't play either of those.  It's killing me on the inside.***

2013 Big Bang Mini Award (most underrated or overlooked) - Guacamelee!

Guacamelee is a nifty little metrovania game about masked luchadors with a Mexican Dia de Los Muertos aesthetic and a TRIUMPH among portmanteaus for a title.  It's on PSN and Steam, people, give it a shot.

Biggest Disappointment - Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness

I liked the return to older Disgaea traditions (weapon levels, easier class upgrades, simplified skill levels and skill passing), but D2's story, class variety, stage variety, and endgame content were lacking.  I wish I had just played Disgaea 4 for 30 more hours than indulged in Disgaea D2.

*I'm not sorry.

**I think I was unfriended by some people on FessBork due to my excess enthusiasm.

***Not really, but I am disappointed.

Oh man, I loved DMC1 and DMC3.  When I was in high school (being a very angry white kid indeed) they were two of my absolute favorites.

Devils Never Cry - DMC3 main theme, which I overrate to the status of "all-time video game classic."  Like that DMC4 song, it doesn't get really good until the chorus hits halfway through.

Given how unconventional the name is as a title for...well, anything, I agree with this.
The game's name is never really pronounced through voice over work either, unless you see the japanese characters that demonstrate it's "yeez" over "wise".

If I'm not mistaken, didn't the manual of the first north-american release of Ys mentionned it was pronunced "eece" as in the word "fleece"? It also seems confirmed by the the original writing イース or iisu, which does use a hard "s" pronunciation over a softer "z", so I guess both yeez or wise would be wrong. And since it's in katakana, we can consider that it is only the closest way possible to render the intended pronunciation in Japanese. Hence I think that we can consider "eece" as the official pronunciation, or either way the closest one we can have in English, especially since it was in an official release and that the japanese pronunciation seems to confirm it.
The name Ys is based on a legendary French city that was supposedly lost in the ocean. According to Wikipedia, the proper pronunciation of that city's name is EESS, which I think is the same as what you are saying.
This is correct.  Also, in the opening intro to Ys Origin (which is spoken in French) they use the "eece" pronunciation.

I despise inappropriate apostrophes of all types.  Especially when they're used as incorrect plurals, but also when they're used to misspell Ys.

ARGH EXTRANEOUS APOSTROPHES ARRRRGH

But to address your question, I think there have only been compilations of Ys I+II. Bunches of those. XSEED has put them on sale quite often recently, though. Not hard to get the ones they've put out.
248  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ys (IV) Memories of Celceta on: December 09, 2013, 10:09:56 AM
Six months ago, I owned zero Ys games and hadn't played any of them seriously.  Now I own eight Ys games and have beaten four of them.  New obsession for the latter half of 2013 (first half of 2013 it was Persona 4).

So I've beaten Ys I, Ys II, and The Oath in Felghana on Steam, plus sunk roughly a dozen hours into Ys vs Sora no Kiseki: Alternative Saga.  I own Ys Origin, Ys Seven, Ys: The Ark of Napishtim (PS2), and Ys: Memories of Celceta.  I don't own a Vita, so Celceta will have to wait, but I want to start on either Origin, Seven, or Napishtim soon.  Which do you suggest?

Left field recommendation: If you liked Ys 1 and 2, and want to see what Celceta's origins were, Dawn of Ys is great, and also tends to be ridiculously cheap for a PC Engine game (12-15 dollar range).
Thanks, but no thanks.  I don't own one, and haven't explored PCE/TGX emulation before.  But more on point, I'd rather play the games I already own first.  I'll consider emulating after I've beaten those first three.

I was shocked to find an English version of this in Seoul last weekend.

I was seriously tempted, but it's hard to justify getting a Vita for just one game.
I think in mid or late 2014 I'm going to get a Vita for... like four games.  Including Celceta.

That was one thing I thought was strong about the Dragon Age games.  Magic is given context and is key to the story, as well as being something equally useful and dangerous / risky.  Dragon Age III is probably going to have the legal vs. illegal use of magic as a key plot point.

The Tales series, on the other hand... hasn't been very thorough about its magic systems since... Phantasia.  Maybe ever?

Actually getting a Vita, then playing Ys: Memories of Celceta, Persona 4: Golden, Gravity Rush, and Virtue's Last Reward.  I'm getting a Vita in 2014.  Already saving up for it.
Whatever Persona **** that we get in North America.  Although that's almost certainly 2015.
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Transistor
Child of Light
Cosmic Space Heroine
Project Eternity
Massive Chalice
Bravely Default (though I lack a 3DS....)
inFamous: Second Son (though I lack a PS4....)

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky: Second Chapter

Okay, don't think I can make it this week either.  I'll be out of town until Sunday afternoon and don't want to try on my phone's IRC app.

Well, I bought the Silver Edition.  And I don't have a Vita.  But I have a CD player!

(this Ys music collection is pretty baller, guys)

I would stay away from a list of "best stories in an RPG" because that is SO subjective.  Nobody could agree on anything.  It would only invite controversy.  The thread for that article would break 100 pages in 90 days.

...You should start on the article tomorrow.
255  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ys (IV) Memories of Celceta on: November 24, 2013, 11:25:10 PM
I tried Wanderers from Ys YEARS ago on the SNES and thought it was terrible.  Earlier this year I started Oath in Felghana and really liked it, so much so that I bought Ys Seven and Ys Origin.  I (barely) started those but liked them as well.  I *finally* finished Oath in Felghana this weekend, and I'm around the middle of the Chronicles+ version of Ys I.  I've also put about 12-15 hours into Ys vs. Sora no Kiseki: Alternative Saga.

Question: does character appearance or displayed weapon change at all in Ys Seven or Memories of Celceta?  I really liked completing item sets in Felghana and getting the new looks for Adol.  Anything like that in the two most recent games?

In Ys Seven he does not change appearance except for one scene in an arena fight, but other than that he has the same skin the entire game. His shield and sword change but not the armor. Im not too sure about MoC because I try to avoid reading too much into the games I am anticipating.
OK, that's good.  I like seeing weapons change cosmetically.  I think I got used to that somewhere in between Final Fantasy VII and Dragon Quest VIII and now judge when an RPG doesn't do that.
