16  The Rest / General Discussions / Evolution 2016 on: July 13, 2016, 10:36:34 PM
So I guess I've become the fighting game guy, but Evo this year is almost upon us! The main games this year are, Street Fighter 5, Smash Wiiu, Smash Melee, Pokken Tournament, Guilty Gear Xrd, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat X, Tekken 7 and Killer Instinct.

Some of the storylines for this year include
1. Most of the games have experienced decent growth, barring MKX, UMVC 3 and Guilty Gear Revelator. But Street Fighter 5 has reached the insane number of 5065 entrants this year, and both Smash Wiiu and Smash melee both over 2000 entrants each.

2. A lot of clamor over making recently released characters tournament legal. Both Ibuki and Balrog for SF5 have been out for about 2 weeks and a lot of people claim Akuma in Tekken 7 is too new also. In fact, there was an Ibuki bug discovered and immediately patched where when she does an air throw, she becomes completely invincible for 6 frames while landing. If someone gets far/wins with one of these characters, the blowups will probably be real. It's also a problem in that the newest version of Tekken 7 is arcade only so far and thus, American players have no way to play it currently

3.Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, a series that has been considered by many to be Americas game since very few players outside of the US play it, was won by an international player from Chile last year. Kaneblueriver also seems extremely strong coming into evo this year as he has won a lot of the tournaments leading up to now. Can the US take back the title?

4. Similarly, Sonicfox might be in an even more untouchable situation in Mortal Kombat X. The guy has taken first at almost every major MKX tournament for the year. In fact, he won about 100 grand in the span of a week or so at some point. Though to be fair, one of them was the major international tournament for the game, sponsered by Esports League and Netherrealm themselves. Actually come to think of it, he's been the champion for ESL pro league in MKX for 3 seasons running, I'm not sure that's ever happened in any game.

5. Pokken tournament was the subject of a lot of mockery and outrage when it was first announced to be one of the main games for evo this year. But the results have been a surprisingly large amount of entrants and interest. I've actually watched some of the tournaments, it looks quite fun. The main problems with the game are that it's on Wiiu, and each setup requires 2 consoles and 2 monitors since split screen is untenable in a tournament. That game is just a logistical nightmare in a big tournament with almost 1200 entrants.

6. Top 8 for Street Fighter 5 will be broadcast this year on ESPN 2. Not sure how many viewers this will actually attract, but I'm surprised it's not on The Ocho.

If interested at all, here is the stream schedule for the event

I actually put in vacation so I could stay home and watch it. If people wanna head onto some kinda irc chat or something while viewing, I would be up for that.

Playing the free ps plus games this month, Paragon and Furi. Man, I breezed through the first few boss fights of Furi so I thought it was pretty easy. The difficulty curve then spikes the hell up, and I've been bashing my head against the wall that is the 5th boss for a bit. There is a slight startup to the dodge/dash that's a bit off-putting and you actually go further if you hold the button it seems. Well, I think I'm almost at the end.

Oh, and EVO less than a week away, HYPE!

Finally looked at some stuff for Kinsglaive, man, some of these character designs just scream "I'm untrustworthy". Also, the emperor looks like the High Sparrow from Game of Thrones. Really loving the weird mix of fantasy and modern clothing shown so far though.
19  Media / General Games / Paragon on: July 09, 2016, 12:53:09 PM
So Paragon is free on PS plus this month and I played a few matches. It's a solid moba with interesting ideas, the shift to third person changes some stuff up. Wondering if anyone else has given it a shot. If people are interested, I'm all for playing some matches. I think it's cross play between ps4 and pc too, not sure.

The real dream is something like Tekken's Force Mode/Scenario Campaign with character-specific cutscenes.  Doesn't sound like that's what this is.  Also, sounds like this Story Mode doesn't have much replayability?

It's definitely not that. Main reason to replay it is you get 30k fight money for beating it on normal, then you unlock the ex difficulty and you get another 50k fight money for beating it on that that's about enough fm to buy a dlc character.

Played and streamed through all of Street Fighter 5's story mode dlc in one 3 hour sitting. I actually quite enjoyed it, though if you're not someone who knows the lore and other games the enjoyment may not all be there. Some clipping problems but damn did capcom put in work. A lot of enemies have their own unique attack animations and special moves, they did not haveta do that.

Tell me more.  How does that mode play?  Do you choose a character or what?  I've only just heard about this a few days ago and a Story Mode for Street Fighter has been a dream of mine for a decade or longer.  But I don't want to watch it on Youtube if the Story has unique elements for each character or something

Eh it's a lot like the Mortal Kombat 9/x story modes if you've played those. You don't pick the characters you play as, there's just a story that jumps around character perspectives and you do one round fights as whatever character in the scene right then.Don't wanna get your hopes up too much as I've been reading around the internet and it seems a lot of people hate it. I liked it personally but it is quite campy/saturday morning cartoonish, don't come into this expecting a deep narrative experience. Also, some characters feel they get very little screen time and just feel kinda shoved aside.

It does kinda bridge the gap between street fighters 4 and 3 though and there are 2 special guest characters that are only playable in story mode right now. If you're interested in it, it's a special free dlc that you gotta dl seperately on steam/psn store for some reason. If you wanna just watch a playthrough, plenty on youtube, including my own.

Captured Deathstroke and activated the Knightfall Protocol in Arkham Knight. Since I didn't really bother with the Riddler trophies, I then YouTubed the extended ending. I didn't understand it at all. Is there going to be another Arkham game?

Well, if you consider how much money that series makes, then probably. They did just dlay the new arkham collection indefinitely though. Maybe they'll do some other dc hero since in arkham knight, there is some radio chatter of what's happening in metropolis and some mention of queens industries too. Well,
since everyone knows that Bruce Wayne is batman now, he can't keep going on being batman. The extended scene hints that someone new takes up the mantle, and they use fear gas.

Mid year sale on psn and that 15 dollar one piece pirate warriors 3 is really tempting me, but I got a backlog to finish.

this trend of them just doing english subtitles for asian versions instead of a full localization is really working out, bit on gundam breaker 3 cause of that. Also supposedly there's no macross this time cause rights to macross outside of japan is a huge clusterfuck they don't want to deal with. I wonder how the translations will be for the anime series that never had  formal english localizations
24  Media / General Games / Re: Inafune's latest project The Mighty No.9 looks Mega Rocking, man. on: June 27, 2016, 11:21:11 PM
let this game be a warning to overreaching in terms of kickstarter stretch goals. 4 million stretched over 10 or so platforms is not very much money at all, they really should've been more conservative in their promises. I watched a playthrough of the game and it seems pretty mediocre. There are some cool ideas there but I guess they didn't have the resources or time to fully explore them. I'd be interested in playing a sequel if that ever happens.
25  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Starting a business on: June 23, 2016, 02:30:15 PM
Mainly do your research and decide how much you're work/resources/time you're willing to commit to this.

I've always had this plan of eventually saving up and opening some kind of board game cafe. This is kind of off topic but in the past year one of the last arcades in California decided to move to a cheaper location for rent reasons and just ran into a series of nightmares. Decided to move to a smaller town and had to convince the town's zoning committee to give them the permit. They actually streamed this meeting and it was quite interesting, but got shut down in the end by this committee that was very clearly biased against them. Took a few more tries and got a permit for another location in the town. The building was way not up to code or whatever and now they've gotta spend about 100 grand to renovate. It's been like 2 years and the arcade's not open. Been following the journey and I'm like 'this is actually pretty inspiring but I don't have the fortitude for this.'

TLDR=Owning and running a business is hard

A King's Tale: Final Fantasy XV pre-order exclusive game revealed -- Nova Crystallis

It's a side-scrolling beat-em-up and it kinda came out of nowhere.

A Vita release for this would be nice

Yeah, it's kinda weird there'll be no handheld or mobile release for this. Would be super convenient too since you could play it on your down time. But hey, I'll take it, it's a genre that has sadly not gotten a lot of love in recent memory. I don't think it'll be very long cause games of that genre generally aren't if they're not titled The Bouncer or Dragons Crown. On the subject of XV though I'm actually quite excited for it, hopefully I'll have finished Mankind Divided by the time it comes out. The VR content seems like a silly, let's just have more content for VR thing which is fine. People need stuff to do with their shiny new headsets.
27  Media / General Games / Re: E3 2016: E3 2015 was better Edition. on: June 13, 2016, 07:32:46 PM
Ugh, both the FF XV and Scalebound stuff just really feel like they picked the wrong boss to showcase. The FF XV footage, don't know if it was a guy playing it live and messing up or all prerecorded, but it just looked awkward and kinda janky. Scalebound's boss fight didn't feel very dynamic and a lot of that fight was just him shooting arrows or hey, attack the boss here. It's Kamiya so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but they could've chosen better footage to show. Well, it's pc/xbox anyways so I probably won't get to play it.

On the bright side, Dead rising 4 looks really good and so does We Happy Few. The gwent game we'll see how they rebalance because spies kill the balance of that game.
28  Media / General Games / Re: E3 2016: E3 2015 was better Edition. on: June 12, 2016, 09:30:48 PM
Got back from work and just watched the super best friends stream of the EA conference. I think it was actually quite good, yeah there's a lotta sports stuff but those are probably the franchises that make them the most money so it's understandable. Titanfall 2's supposedly multiplatform and it looks great, so thankfully I'll actually be able to play it this time.

Not much shown of new Mass Effect, but we do know that we got returning races like Krogan and Asari. Plus we get Mako 2.0. I got some confidence this new game'll be good since the slate's mostly wiped clean and they don't have the pressure to carry over decisions made in previous games. We kinda got shown in 3 that there's just no way to fit in all your previous decisions, same with dragon age inquisition. Sure some of the storylines that did carry through all 3 games were cool like punching the reporter and Conrad Verner was hilarious, but the expectations were just too great for ME 3. Either way, look forward to more media on this.

Onto Bethesda stuff in half an hour. We know about Dishonored 2 already, wonder if they have any actual surprises.
29  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: FF12 HD - Zodiac Age (whoomp there it is) on: June 09, 2016, 08:30:18 PM
Probably the best new enemy to come from that game was the fake save point. Also the final boss' one winged angel form was pretty cool and he had some nice looking attack animations in his human form. Actually, come to think of it, 12 had a lot of cool designs, I wouldn't mind Zalera to come back in another future FF. It's also interesting how we get some previous final bosses in summon form like zeromus and exdeath.

the gundam series between V and Z3 are pretty much identical minus gundam wing plus crossbone, where's G gundam? It was in the gba ones. Also, bring back tekkaman blade with his super OP family. Lol I actually remember the terrible translation of tekkaman on american TV like over a decade ago.
