Yeah, I've been playing it too. It's overall fun! I don't like certain things about it, like how most of the characters are almost the same, with some exceptions (i.e. I think Ryu and Ken aren't too good at hitting targets above them, and Dimitri and Dante are much better at that sort of thing?), or how much cheesecake is in this game, or the story, but that's okay, because Frank West and Hiesen-Ko are somehow together.  Next to Fire Emblem and Persona 4 Golden, It's the best game to play on the metro!

Now if only they could go back to good old character-driven dramas, rather than be all JRPG-Save-the-world-blah-blah-something-something...

You got all wrong.

What did I get wrong? I guess in the beginning, the "save the world" was the thing, but even in that, Final Fantasy VI had a variety of well-rounded characters with their own journeys that are somewhat removed from the overarching story, but still affected by it. I'm not against plot, but I feel the characters should always come first.

Now I don't want to derail the OT, so that is all I will say for now.

A healthy inbalance is good for a game, sometimes, too...

I'm a big fan of turn-based combat. HOWEVER, I do think there is a need to innovate. Let me tell you a story.

So, I love Final Fantasy IX. I remember playing it on my PS2 for many loving hours. When it came out on the PSN, I got it, no questions asked. I love the atmosphere, the characters, the music. Love love love. However, after about a disk or so, I realized that FF IX just seems monotonous. Go through a dungeon. Kill some monsters. Fight a boss. Wait! Steal from it first! Rinse, repeat. sigh... I do not regret playing that game again, but it needs to innovate.

Now take a more recent turn-based game, Radient Historia. Love that combat! What I like about it is that each battle is a mini-puzzle of how to get the dudes into one square and waste those fools. I don't want to come off as an Atlus fanboy, but they have turn-based combat down pat, and if Square wants to innovate in that direction, that's great! I really liked the stuff they've come up with in the past (FF IX nonwithstanding), and anything that lets me have options in combat will be a win!

Now if only they could go back to good old character-driven dramas, rather than be all JRPG-Save-the-world-blah-blah-something-something... A man can dream...

Now, I've also noticed that the Fighting Type has been slowly getting a little bit of a power creep, right? Is Fairy going to help with that as well?

What do you all think of the new Fairy Type? Is this a good paradigm shift, or too little too late?

That said, I'm probably going to get it and Nuzlocke it, naming all of my characters after playwrights.

Never said I wasn't exposed to them, just that I don't particularly like them ;)

Same. I was a Star Wars/Muppets kid.

HAHA! And now your friendly overlord Disney owns them all, along with your little Marvel too!

But seriously, I would say KH II is the best to start out with, as it has a faster start-up period, but KH I has less of a dumb anime story and more of a general simple story. I think KH DDD has the best soundtrack of all of them, but that's because they use music from fantasia.

Although, since you're not as big of a disney fan, go with KH II. It's got Tron, PotC, and FF VII.

Also, sorry if I seem too snarky. I really enjoyed my time with Kingdom Hearts, and if you keep an open mind, you will too, perhaps. Possibly.

I'm actually mildly pleased with RPGs today. Well, perhaps not ALL RPGs, and certainly not all JRPGs, but I think the future is still bright. Persona 4 comes to mind as the perfect modern take on the Japanese Role Playing genre, and Independant developers are allowed to take more risks and do art for expression's sake, and not just to pander to an audience. Sure, that means there are few good AAA RPG Titles (although even there can be some hits from time to time), but if you're just focusing on that, then you're missing the forest for the trees. There's a new paradigm shift coming, and we are seeing more and more independent publishers, and I don't think that's a bad thing. I mean, there's that new Shadowrun game coming out! That should be good right?

At any rate, I feel that holding a negative attitude that yearns for the "good old days" will just set you up to be dissapointed. Instead be open to things, and you will find good experiences!

Just as long as they don't pander to an audience. Or objectify women.
