Blobber?  Gridder at least makes sense to me...what's 'blobber' even referencing?

Four silly adventurers huddled together. I've heard it mostly from gog.com. I think Dungeon Crawler fits best, but it can be attached to Rogue-likes or games that simply have dungeons instead of being centered around them. Semantics.

I've already noticed my opinions and RPGFan reviews don't often match, so I'm buying this. I love the gridder genre and I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy this one too, even if I don't care for the fanservice.

I completely disagreed with their Might & Magic X: Legacy review too. I think they just don't really 'get' gridders.

Gridders? I thought the were called Blobbers. Granted both sound pretty darn silly. I also think you're being a bit rash here, Kyle liked Etrian Odyssey. If that game isn't a good example of a modern Blobber I don't know what is. Other than Legend of Grimrock. Haven't played M&MX but I am counting on it.

As for the game, well I have no idea. I personally adore Etrian Odyssey but that had two demos for two different games, so I knew I was gonna like it. This one doesn't, and doesn't really have a concept I can grant worthy of putting down some cash to try. Sad, but I hope to see more of the genre in the future. I love dungeon crawling and I love revisiting some of the older ones from time to time. I can definitely see a game like King's Field, Ultima Underworld, Might & Magic, Eye of the Beholder or even the Gold Box games working beautifully on a 3DS or Vita.

Wow, this is a surprise.  I wasn't particularly expecting a localization here.

Edit: RE: baby-making games:  They've been off and on in terms of popularity, really, I wouldn't quite say FE:A kick-started it since they were on the rise again beforehand with games like Agarest.  I mean, we had Phantasy Star III doing it in 1991!

I, for one, welcome this new trend.

Of course, I just first remembered FE:A for the subject. I have no interest in Agarest or PSIII, so I suppose that's why I didn't remember it until now. I think the only game that I've played that included that was Dragon's Quest V and Pokemon. I never made any eggs in Pokemon, though.

I just find the trope weird. Certainly so when it's with people. Barely detracts from the game, but it's just a thing that itches the back of my brain. At least the way they handle it doesn't make me want to shoot myself like in Conception.

That makes 2 JRPG's that are coming to the Vita that involves baby-making. Is this a trope now? I thought it was just a passing thing in Fire Emblem - but now with Conception and this I'm starting to doubt that.

Otherwise it looks nice, have no idea how it plays but I am glad that we're finally getting something other than ports/remasters/multiplatform titles. Can't wait to get it for a discount 1 or 2 years after release.
5  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: 2014 Kickstarter, Steam Greenlight, etc. thread. What's piqued your interest? on: April 13, 2014, 10:45:09 PM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niNYfnUU4hI From the dev's YouTube page.  It's a gameplay vid.

Thanks. Still wouldn't call it an SRPG, though.

I haven't seen a mention of SNES or 2D. Do you have a quote? I'll be keeping an eye on this game.

From the kickstarter page (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/grimmbros/dragon-fin-soup): "A charming SNES style RPG with Roguelike elements, set in a twisted fairytale world with a cheerful, yet raging alcoholic Heroine". Still have no idea where the SNES part comes in. Most of those elements pre-date SNES (roguelike) or were made after the SNES (Action RPG, hotkey skills etc).

And I misread from the trailer (0:53) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkNiRbPgb-w "Rich classical 2D WORLD beautifully rendered in HD". They meant perspective, probably. Luckily I couldn't find that in their other trailers, so my nitpick is now redacted. Odd choice of words in a game with polygons, though.

It looks like an SRPG, except that player and enemy turns happen simultaneously.  So it's like "active time SRPG."

Doesn't really look like an SRPG to me. Looks more like a rogue-like. "Tactical Action RPG" sounds like a nicer definition. Sounds like a mix of turn-based gameplay and Action RPG's.Which I would definitely love.

The Kickstarter page is a bit confusing though. It's not SNES styled, nor (in the trailer) is it 2D. Odd.
7  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: RPGs you're ashamed to like? on: April 05, 2014, 02:52:39 AM
I'm ashamed of all games I play because I am ashamed of gaming and being a nerd in general.

Which is why I have no shame when I bring up games like Lightning Warrior Raidy or the PSP Queen's Blade games.

Wait....

...Will I have to delete my history if I google any of those things?

Just checking.

Looks like an okay dungeon crawler. The art is nice, though the combat seems to lack any sort of ambition. Not a real bad thing for a dungeon crawler. I never tried it or even heard of this game until now, so it's really just a guess.

Can't imagine it garnering that much interest, the genre is almost as niche as Visual Novels at this point. A shame. Any pics of the maps or traps and the like? That's my favorite part with these type of games.

Their other game Demon Gaze might get a little attention because of the starving Vita RPG crowd at this point. Maybe it'll do well.
9  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The official waifu thread on: April 05, 2014, 01:43:56 AM
Well this has to be one of the silliest threads I've ever seen. And I've seen like, 4. Really up there.

Expected to see more Final Fantasy characters though. That's surprising.
10  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Retrospective on: April 05, 2014, 01:28:09 AM
It was mediocre on vanilla. Like all other Elder Scrolls games to an extent.

Thank you, and good night!
11  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: RPGs you're ashamed to like? on: April 05, 2014, 01:26:10 AM
Ashamed of liking? Nothing I know of, really. I kind of don't like Xenosaga's covers, but that's only because I tend to not like owning things with robot girls. Luckily it's a decent RPG series so there's that.

Uh...I really like that Harry Potter RPG on the Game Boy Color. It was more like the books and casting all those spells made it feel really unique as an RPG. It's one of the better RPGs on the GBC, I feel. It's not a game that is really panned or anything, so I guess there is no point in mentioning it.

Ashamed? That's just silly.

I really enjoy class based games, it's really the reason why my favorite Final Fantasy's are the one no-one likes. i.e: FFV, or FFIII.
Bravely Default better be on that list.

I actually don't like BD that much.

But, damn this game is such a bore in the demo. I haven't finished it yet, but so far I am underwhelmed. The combat seems to be OK, but the story is just boring. So, boring. The voice acting doesn't help either. Hopefully after that they'll barely talk and I'll just dungeon crawl with the weird baby things.

14  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: RPGs for the Sega Saturn on: March 16, 2014, 01:34:35 AM
I know, I was just showing how I broke I really was. :p

Importing games and reading the translated scripts is not ideal for me to be honest. But if the game is good enough I'll try it out.
15  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Bravely Default: Flying Fairy on: March 16, 2014, 01:18:44 AM
So am I supposed to do the same thing in Chapter 6 as I did in 5? I really don't want to fight the same bosses again. It's so boring, and a bit on the easy side.

Although I'm pretty sure my cheese strategy of spamming those Pirate attacks with Free Lunch is not gonna last long. Neither is my Rampart + Nullify elements really that sustainable.
