1  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Good lord help me. Ys 6 Ark / Zonplas on: January 17, 2008, 11:43:26 AM

That's what I call a dramatic description of a gaming struggle, heh.  Have you considered poetry? :P

Ys VI is not particularly difficult, imo.  Level up some more?

Glad you got an LOL out of it... yeah I got past the jerk after about 3 tries last night. In case someone out there is someday googling for "Zonplas destroys me, help me before I hurt myself" or the like, what I was doing wrong was basically being too passive.

I had the stupid Wind sword thing and it was like a Level 3 or 4, something like that. Just standing underneath Zonplas before the claw attack I could do 2 Jump/Spin Attacks and then retreat. Going this route I could get him down to 650 HP before he started doing the "blow sparkly things at you" attack. I had him down in the 350 HP range when started coughing out the balls that crack open with the glow flies. At this point I was taking it easy, waiting for the next "cough"... basically you should try to clear the balls, but really concentrate more on attacking Zonplas. That was the difference maker. I got Zonplas down to 20 HP when it started coughing out like 15 balls at a time (myself having only 18 HP) so I just concentrated on getting that one last hit on it.

Cool game, glad I could move on from there now... I got the fire sword, leveled that up a bunch. The graphics when I entered the temple area was awesome (in a PS2 choppy way). The huge temple ruins of the guys holding swords - sweet. The baddies here gave huge EXP, so I ended up entering a room with like a dozen of the baddies that make the vacuum cleaner sounds about 10 times, leveling up 4 times pretty quickly. Good stuff.

5 PM is quickly approaching, and my heart weeps at the thought.

Alright... I'll try to make this brief yet have enough info..

I started Ys literally about 18 months ago. I was doing a painful 24 hour shift at my work (e-mail server crashed, old school Exchange Server on a 400 MHz PII requiring a full rebuild - IE hours and hours of waiting) and I had my PS2 hooked up to my monitor. I got to the point of facing Zonplas (aka Jue) and was consistently dying. But seeing as it was 7 in the morning, and I had been working since 7 the previous morning, I decided to call it a day. (And, the e-mail server was up and sorta stable.)

Here I am 18 months later, trying to finish my Ys experience. I absolutely love Ys, I have very fond memories of lusting after Ys Book I and II as a kid, then playing and finishing Book I and II on my college roommates TG-16 CD and playing some Ys III on my Genesis.

Anyway.... back to the question. Zonplas has killed me for about 4 hours straight, each battle lasting about 15 minutes and I'm ready to break my Ys 6 disc. I am rusty since I haven't played this game in 18 months..

I am level 20. My sword is a "Livart",  Shield as "Rehdan" Shield (Def +18) and armor is Ring Mail (Def +16). I am sporting a wooden bracelet (Str +2 Def +2) and the Sylphen Boots. In my tool slot I have 9 Honeys, each giving me +50 HP.

I have taken Zonplas down to 88 HP, but never lower. And this is after like 10 battles over 2 days. It's frustrating to say the least.

I know I must have forgotten a lot of the attacks of the Ys 6 system.
I know about the "Jump attack", where I jump and hit the attack button and it swirls up. I know I can also build up a hurricane like sword attack, but against this airborne opponent it's pretty useless. When he gets around to start spitting out like 10 of those little balls that turn into fireflies I can use it, but overall it's not too helpful..

Anyway, what's your strategy here? Am I underpowered? Usually I play RPG's very conservatively, so I don't think I am underpowered, but the last time I played was a year and half ago...

Thanks so much, any answers will make my Wednesday night far happier than my Monday and Tuesday night..

4  Media / Single-Player RPGs / 16:9 PS2 RPG? on: May 15, 2007, 09:37:03 AM
Thanks for the Wiki list.

From skimming through it, it looks like Valkyrie Profile 2 would be my best bet. It supports 16:9 as well as 480p (am planning on getting the component cables at some point here in the near future).

FF XII does 16:9 (not into that).. not much else promising on there.

Hey all,

I just started up Dragons Quest VIII and much to my surprise it can play in 16:9 mode, sweet.. I love using my full screen.

Is there a list of PS2 games that are 16:9 compatible?
