Rewatching Curb Your Enthusiasm in preparation for diving into season 9.  Larry David is a genius on par with Anthony Hopkins for acting or David Lynch for filmmaking or Thom Yorke for music.  Though I don't suppose his many many many idiosyncrasies have ever allowed him to enjoy his success.

A patron just got mad at me because the quiet room wasn't quiet enough. She was the only one in there.  I guess our furnace was humming too loudly for her to study...

everyone is insane, all the time.

I'm insane and refuse to shop at either amazon or best buy, they are another in a long string of soulless corporations that kill off local business (and make one or two people absurdly rich at the expense of hundreds of thousands of others).  My conscience won't let me be privy to those sort of organizations (at least willingly, because I realize that I HAVE to buy from certain giant conglomerates when there is no other option) when if I just spend a few bucks more I know my money will go towards supporting business practices that I agree with.

That's part of the reason I don't have a credit card.  Their business model just seems predatory.

sorry for the rant.

And how does one get their banks to behave in such a civilized manner, exactly?

Regulate them so they can't take advantage of people.

Too bad that sort of thing is anathema in the States.

I have my bank card set up to run as a credit card specifically because if it gets stolen then the banks usually cover the losses, where as if someone got hold of a debit card (and PIN) that's in my name then I'm on the hook for most of whatever gets stolen.

I've only ever had an out and out credit card once, in college. I went to Las Vegas for a weekend (and a wedding) and blew through a $1000 before I even realized what was going on.  Fun, but I was an idiot about it and learned my lesson.

just got back from the dentist. It sucks to go there and even though they spent half the visit praising me for how well I take care of my teeth, I still need to have 4 fillings replaced.  It's a bitch, but it's necessary if I don't want to have to sleep with a bite guard or get crowns later on...

^ I've only seen promos for it coming out on the switch, but I don't necessarily know if that means it'll be an exclusive.

I had a patron get mad at me this morning because our water fountain was "too far away from the front door" and he was too lazy to walk the 40 feet over to it.

In general I don't think I'm a very strict mod, I don't think most people here have ever had me ban them or threaten them with a ban. Most of my duties really just involve clearing away the spam.

^ this. You tolerated Ygg for MONTHS when most other admins would have punted him.

Also,  because of their position of authority, police are absolutely open to be more heavily scrutinized than almost everyone else.  All too often you see police think the opposite, like they should be above scrutiny (and that's really really scary when your job so often puts people's lives in your hands).

There were houseguests.  They brought a movie with them.  It was on magnetic tape.

Yes, I still have a VCR, but I hadn't powered it up in years.  Was it going to screech and grind?  Was it going to smoke?  Was it going to mangle their tape?

Alas, the outcome was far worse than I feared.  The VCR worked perfectly, and the movie was hideously boring.

but did you use the tracking???
