Brush and Quill / Re: Book Thread Continued
« on: July 31, 2018, 08:58:04 AM »
After talking about wanting to read it for years, I'm finally going to start The Confessions of St Augustine today.  I honestly can't wait to sink my teeth into it.  Everyone I've ever talked to about it (who isn't a militantly atheist knob) says it's a fantastic book.

There are days when I wonder how much of news is fear mongering and how much is, you know, actual news?  Because after all, people who are afraid are much easier to influence because the powers-that-be can play on those fears.

As a sort of ritual, I watch an episode of Star Trek almost every week.  Been doing it for.... 4 years now, maybe?  I do it to keep up with a podcast called Mission Log (Google if you're interested).  Anyway, we're on Deep Space Nine.  Just watched the last episode of Season 1 two nights ago, which was an episode that featured religious and political shenanigans all over the place.  During the episode, one of the characters threw this line into a small speech:

"We're all very good at conjuring up enough fear to justify whatever we want to do."

It was just one sentence in a large portion of dialogue, but I literally had to pause and write it down.  As someone with a hyper-conservative brother and a hyper-liberal sister I am constantly wondering why everyone is so afraid all the time.  And it seems like maybe that's the answer: fear makes us correct, and being correct is the pinnacle of existence (apparently).  The news just plays into that, giving people exactly what they want.

It's obviously not good to be completely uninformed, but I say props to everyone who decides to tune this garbage right out of their lives.  There's a huge difference between being informed and being conditioned.

goddamnit Arvis...  way to put a perfect bow on things

already promoted Soren (who is a badass) to make up for losing the healers

and Boyd isn't the only ax user... Titania does awfully well with them too

Oscar was too much of goober for my tastes (though Kieran is 1000 times worse...)

On that note, did you ever play through Skies of Arcadia, @Rucks?

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

no

Awh, losing Mist sucks. She has a unique promotion (and is also kind of neccessary for you defeating a boss later on, which also means you're probably locked out from an awesome skill for Ike) Oh well. Such is the life of an ironman run.

I'm on chapter 15 and so far I've lost Boyd, Oscar (poor Rolf), Rhys, Mist and Marcia (who was literally playable for 1 turn before she was shot out of the sky). The first 3 all on one map. I might have also lost Illyana (I can't remember).  But you really only play with 14 or 15 characters (and you get to choose from like 45) so losing someone doesn't seem like that big a deal right now.

Gravity Rush: Kat is a cool lead character and the setting/world is fantastic. Some of the mechanics are borked beyond recognition though.  Trying to shoehorn using touchscreen (or motion controls...vomit) into a Vita game almost always ends in disappointment.

Fire Emblem - Path of Radiance: I said this on discord, but I was able to borrow this and Radiant Dawn from a friend who made me write him a $200 deposit check for it (because he is weird and awful).  I haven't play an FE title before but so far it seems to have been worth it.  Tons of fun and I am a huge fan of the perma-death feature. It adds a great deal to the tension of the game, especially if you don't take the cheap way out and save scum in order to keep all of your characters alive (which may as well be cheating in a game like that).

Gotta agree with Ironmage on this one. It literally says in the forum rules that you can get banned if your first posts are just begging for money or YouTube subscriptions.  And it's not like that is exclusive to RPGFan.  It's like that across a significant portion of internet forums. Your music is nifty, but your form is piss poor.

Will buy after I get paid. I very rarely purchase games at or around launch.  So here's hoping there's no buyers remorse on down the line.

Dragon Age Inquisition - Started a week or so ago. Currently character level 7, playing as a dual-wielding female elf.
Just recruited Sera, who promptly replaced Varric, due to me feeling limited by his use of only one weapon. I'm still mainly working on quests in the Hinterlands, although I've briefly explored a few other locations at this point.

BoF IV - Tried the chasing of the hideous apteryx a few more times, and ended up only frustrated. Haven't played the game in a few weeks now, which is a shame, because I was enjoying it otherwise. ...What a stupid, stupid thing to put in a game.

don't give up on BoF IV. It's a gem.
