Glad we got a new singleplayer mode. That was the only thing they needed to announce to get me on-board.

It looks like Betty and Cherie's designs actually got better, which is amazing.  But as expected, the rest of the female cast just got worse.

Valkyria Chronicles 4

This is slow-going, but I'm basically finished with it.  It's pretty much the perfect sequel to VC1 and the story is actually better than I expected.  There are some "morally gray" themes that actually aren't completely mishandled, which is nice for an "anime" RPG.

I have to admit that the Valkyria formula of throwing greater and greater odds at you for you to overcome really stresses me out, but it does feel good when you finally overcome them.  It's just tough starting another battle after finishing one.

Valkyria 4 does an excellent job of balancing its new class, Grenadiers, even though at times it does feel like they're a little overpowered.  However, rarely does it ever feel like it's balanced against the player.  Once you learn to think around Grenadiers, they're almost always an advantage for you.  I just made sure I prioritized the killing of all enemy Grenadiers as soon as possible, heh.

One thing that VC4 really does better than VC1 is in its Squaddies.  The recruitable characters here ALL have their own (optional) story chapters that you unlock by using them in battle.  It's something VC1 was begging for, since it had such interesting and well designed "generic" units.  So to see VC4 really step up to the plate in this area was fantastic.

I don't have many real complaints with the game.  One is that the interface is still stuck in 2007, like the original.  The other is that the "true" ending is locked behind beating the final boss on Hard mode, which is kind of a dealbreaker for me.  Other than that, this is about as perfect as VC1!

Up Next: Octopath Traveler?

Besides Korean dramas, I started watching The Good Doctor, an American medical drama based on a Korean drama.  It's a pretty formulaic American medical drama.

I honestly enjoyed this game a great deal.

Because it's actually a really good game.

But yeah, it looked like Square was turning a corner for a while there, back in like 2015 around the time of FFVIIR announcement, but they've since just gone right back to being terrible again.  And Tabata quitting is the most damning evidence of all that the company is mismanaged.

If Square were a sports team, they'd need to fire all the coaches and start rebuilding.  Why the crap did they announce VIIR and make Nomura the director knowing he's directing HK3 and his inability to stick to a schedule?  Ridiculous.

Sounds amazing, D!  But we'll only be there for a couple days and it'll be mostly upstate.  Plus, every minute of every day is booked, as is usually the case with my vacations. :(

Sorry bro, that was awesome of you to offer.  Would be super cool to meet you irl.

Yeah, as someone who enjoys the Discord, I really miss these forums.

BTW, haps are I'm going to New York in a few days.  It's for my 8th anniversary.

Good lord.  Is 6 years the longest a thread has lain fallow before getting necro'd?

I like the ones from Dark Cloud 2 because you can just stand behind them before opening them, then wail away on them until they die.

I also started reading Forsaken Soul by Priscilla Royal, the fifth book in the Medieval Mysteries series. I'm not sure if I've talked about this series before on the boards, but it's set in 13th century England and is about a couple of nuns and a monk with a secret solving murder mysteries. It's not dissimilar to the Brother Cadfael mysteries, if you're familiar with those. I started reading the series while I was doing an internship with the publisher in 2012, and, though it can be a bit hit and miss, I've really enjoyed the series. Good characters, fun mysteries, and just well-written overall.

This seems like a really neat concept for detective fiction.  How "realistic" is the setting?

Considering the DOuble Gear system is part of the story (such as it is) of the game and the bosses (ostensibly) use it, I'm guessing it was probably not added at the last minute.  '^___^

That said, it could still be poorly implemented.  From the demo it felt like something you are only supposed to use infrequently.

You could increase the grounds but then split them in half and pour over less water?

I mean, you could just increase the ratio of grounds to water...

That's how I was, @Tomara
I hated coffee but loooooved coffee-flavored things.  And then I tried frozen coffee, which is essentially just a coffee-flavored thing.  Then iced coffee.... then just normal hot coffee.  That was the progression and now I just want to taste coffee with only a little sweetness.

As different as Rucksy, Frosty, and I are, we have the important things in common: coffee and RPGs.
