I'd put this in the middle - 6 or 7. I appreciated and loved it at the time, but looking back at it, there's so much more depth in pretty much every other game in the series. The main four are great, but there is so much squandered potential.

It's still probably my favourite new release of last year (I've not played Cold Steel or many, many other games) but it took me less than a month into 2017 to find something I enjoyed more.

Depends if you want Zestiria spoilers as well. But I'm still recovering from the ending too.

Tales of games are usually terrible at final arcs, but Berseria's was pretty spot on.

If it's not clear from my review, I really loved this game. It's up there with Xillia, Abyss and Vesperia as one of my favourites.

You need to hold down L2.

Also...

Spoiler: show
Your plot suggestions is what I wish happened.

You know, I really, really liked this game, but I've got next to no motivation to go back. I missed the Carnival, and I'll probably skip Episode Gladio and Prompto on release and just buy the DLC pack when it's cheap. I've not touched the game since I finished it. That ending was a killer, though.

Eizen is a dream boat,

You get it. You just get it.

I love how he's a very reserved ruins and knowledge geek.

SO4 is so much fun. If you ignore the bland cast and bland story. It is, however, better than 5 overall.

Xillia 2 has the best arte/tp based combat in the series, but screws up a lot of character development that I fell in love with in 1. I like the darker tone story, but because of the structure of that game, the pacing was very off.

Xillia 2 is also way better than SO4.

I really like Velvet as a protagonist. She's a little like Yuri but less carefree, and far more serious, and she pretty much has very little regard for any moral code. I've heard she softens up a bit later on.

To be honest, I feel like dungeon design in JRPGs in general has gone pretty down hill in the last few years, but Tales is certainly the worst offender.

Sadly we didn't get an advanced review copy. But I caved and bought it. So I'll work as hard as I can to get a review out as soon as possible!

Everyone's early impressions have me pumped, though.

I wish the story weren't so yucky. :(

Just not your cup of tea? Apparently it's one of the best in the series, but that's subjective.

Marty is on the ball. I'm literally on the border of buying this because of the better reception.

I'm gonna be real boring and say I like villains who aren't 100% evil. More they're an idealistic clash with the protagonist, rather than a straight-out cold blooded murderer. Not that I dislike the latter, but it's whatever's appropriate to the game.

Now I absolutely adore Kefka as a villain, but I don't think he'd work very well if you placed his character in an RPG now. You only have to look at how Square has butchered him in Dissidia to see why...

I haven't played Suikoden 2 so I can't comment on Luca Blight.

Sort of like Ghaleon from Lunar?  There is definitely something sympathetic about him.

Yeah, I'd say so. You and Goose nailed it really.

I can't muster any enthusiasm for this game. I've bought every Tales title on day one but I'm skipping this one for a few months. Tales games used to be a treat, then they started getting annualized releases (or like 18 months give or take.) Zestiria and Hearts R were disappointing, and even Xillia 2, as fun as it was, wasn't necessary, so my expectations are pretty low. I hope I'm proven wrong about this one.

So this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, but you know all of those terrible write-ups of the Assassin's Creed movie?

They're right.

I loved the Game of the Year lists and everyone did a great job with their write-ups and such.

But nobody has yet mentioned the most depressing thing here: in a year that promises to see the FFVII Remake, everyone's Most Anticipated is Persona 5.  This makes me... indescribably sad, and rather alienated.  I wonder if maybe I'm in the wrong community.

That being said, this feature did make me break down and add Digimon Cyber Sleuth to my list.

Persona 5 is very close, and has been delayed and delayed over and over again. It's also put in Japan, where it was rated rather highly. We know more about it, perhaps why so many of us put P5 as our most anticipated release of this year. That, and many of us put it on our list last year. Persona isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I think RPGFan has had a long history of Persona fanboys and girls on the staff.

And trust me, I'm very excited for the FFVII Remake, but even though one part of the game might, and I say that with a pinch of salt, come out this year, we hardly know anything. Personally, I get excited about games that I know a lot about, and I've also played through FFVII more than once, so I know in a way what to expect (while obviously acknowledging FFVIIR will be very, very different.) Once I've heard more on the remake, I'm sure I'll be ready for it.

But I'm really glad you're interested in Digimon. I loved that game. Yet to finish it, but it's so addictive.

I think I'm just happy FFXV is a thing.

If FFVII is only 10 years old, though, I'm a little younger than I thought :P

I think those rumours floating around about the first 9 games on one disc/one release would be great. It'd tip me over the edge.

I like how Dragon Quest games look and feel old in a way. XI looks absolutely stunning and my excitement for this has hit overdrive. It'll be fantastic to see a new entry over here.
