46  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Things players think are bad but really aren't on: August 23, 2013, 03:39:49 AM
I think the overall mood and flow of the game really decides if random battles work or not. Obviously the old way of loading and having a fight is very cumbersome, but I'd love to see more games transition smoothly from battle to exploration. That married with a fast paced, challenging, and fun combat system could lead to some very innovative games.

I'm really curious to see this combat system. I would have rather had a really good team based action RPG or a turn based system but I'm all for something new and innovative.

She didn't leave due to the harassment btw, she left to pursue other works.

Had to return it due to college bills :(

I remember Grim Grimoire was a JRPG/RTS hybrid and that game was pretty fun.

As for Project Phoenix, I remain cautiously optimistic like everyone else.

Grim Grimoire sucked.

Finally a dream team comes together to make a top of the line Strategy JRPG. Fuck yeah. This is what the genre needs, a team who can put the soul back into this dying genre.
52  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Did I get the shittiest KOTOR 2 ending or does the ending just suck? on: August 10, 2013, 04:32:36 PM
Spoilers of course.

I finally got around to playing KOTOR 2 (with the restoration mod!) and while it had ups and downs, I can't help but feel like the ending kind of crapped out. I played as a male Sith and chose mostly evil options.

Ending results:

T3-M4: Nowhere to be found.
Atton: Simply chilling and waiting for me after I defeated the final boss.
Bao-Dur: Nowhere to be found
Handmaiden and Visas: They had a small confrontation cutscene, nowhere to be found.
Mandalore: Found in a jail cell and told to get the hell out of there.
HK-47 and Goto: They had that tiny cutscene when the little droid sets up the charges, then never seen again.
Hanharr: Nowhere to be found.
Ebon Hawk: Fell into a ditch.

But worst of all I didn't have any final option at the end. Just offed Kreia and headed out with Atton and that was it.

Did I not gain enough influence or something? Man, I feel like the ending should have been way better with all kinds of character drama and interesting things happening. Instead if was just a crash that leaves the main character solo with a couple tiny playable parts with that droid and Atton.

The final boss being three purple floating lightsabers was pretty dumb too.

Any reason we don't have [timg] tags enabled on here?

Final Fantasy 7 brings me back. I was too stupid as a kid to get much further than Midgar so that entire section was practically the whole game to me. Blew my little retard brain.

I just don't score it any additional points whatsoever when sexual images are interwoven into a game for no reason. The buxomness of these women isn't anything to do with the story, they just come from a universe where all women are in someway like that.

So? A lot of elements can be put into a story for no reason other than themselves. That doesn't make them any less interesting. You can take almost any form of fictional world and find countless impractical elements that still lend themselves to the story through their own merits.

Broad chested men aren't sexual just simply for the fact that they exist.

I concede that the character-molestation menus of Dragon's Crown are a bit much.

And a bit hilarious:

I didn't know your history or reasoning beyond not wanting others to see it when reading your review. All I had to go off of was the review itself, as will most readers. When you say the game would give the wrong impression to your friends, the context of your personal life is not apparent.

We can respectfully disagree on the art. As an artist myself, I find the call for censorship from critics (not saying you specifically) detrimental to art and the idea of video games as art. Just as very tasteful games have their place in the industry, games like Dragon's Crown should have their place as well, perhaps not in the hands of children (that is a debate for another day) but at least on the shelves of stores. It's hardly eloquent, hardly smut, but it does make one hell of an impression. That alone may be merit enough to at least respect DC's art style in some degree.

It also made one hell of a marketing blitz.

Exaggerated sexualization in fantasy is very common, yeah, but the extent Dragon's Crown takes it to almost feels like a parody of that. It's not like that kind of fantasy art is even common in video games these days. I can only think of a handful of examples, the barmaid from Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, perhaps the girls from God of War, that one boss from Odin Sphere, and Ivy Valentine and other various fighting game characters (Esp the whole Dead or Alive thing). Definitely nothing running rampant.

I'm just a fan of unusual, highly stylized art, which is what I see Dragon's Crown as. I'd probably say Dragon's Crown pulls it off more tastefully than other games where sexualized women might feel over the top or out of place.
