I agree that in the gaming business (and it is that- a business) traditional turn-based will not translate to big sales or mainstream success.

Pretty silly to say the FF7 remake wouldn't sell if it were turn based. Of course it would.

God, the amount of pessimism surrounding this game is sickening. 5 years ago, everyone and I mean EVERYONE would have wet their pants over this news. Nowadays it's just cool o hate on shit we like. Seriously, I can't fathom how people are having anything negative to say about this game that is in it's infantile stages of development. I shouldn't be surprised though, seeing as it's the norm for people who are content and happy to simply be happy and not say anything, but those who want to be negative can't shut the fuck up out about how it's a terror and an abomination and a travesty before it's even a fucking game. I get that we can all have opinions, but for fucks sake how about waiting til we have something more than spoken ideas and a pretty set of cinematic trailers to actually have a basis for an opinion?

Bullshit.

They've confirmed it's not turnbased and something that looks more like FF13's battle system - which was their least popular entry in the series. Now they're basically turning it into FF 13-4 instead of actual turn based combat, which it should be.

Then people were pissed off because Square clearly knew it was going to be episodic when the game was announced but didn't say anything. They let everyone get all excited and then said "Oh by the way, you're only getting chunks of it at a time", which is a ridiculous way to announce it.

Now they're talking about changing content because things are "more sensitive" now, so it looks like we're going to get content chopped out of the game, or at least altered til it's unrecognisable.

At this point, I'd rather not have it. The entire thing has been a giant clusterfuck and I'd rather they focus on the Tokyo RPG Factory games, and polishing FFXV to make sure it doesn't suck.

What's the point of having a remake of a game if the game is unrecognisable to the original?

Personal preferences aside I don't know if I'd say that I think Cross is better designed than Trigger, but the CT fandom from back in the day definitely rubbed me the wrong way and that REALLY soured my opinion on Trigger for a long time.

This is my experience with a lot of fandoms though. I mean I guess it's silly letting the fandom ruin a thing for me, but that's just how it goes i guessssss.

Yep - the reaction to Legend of Mana was almost exactly the same as it was to CC. Instead of looking at what the game was, they complained the game wasn't a redo of the last game. It's funny, I still remember reading the review for LoM on IGN and thinking "This guy is just whining that the game isn't Secret of Mana" before I had even played either game.

I gave FFX-2 an honest try.....but I got 45 minutes in and I just had to turn it off. It's still not as bad as FF 8 though. And FF13, while a disappointing entry in the series, is not as bad as the hyperbole suggests. It's just kind of dull.

The Last of Us has middling (at best) gameplay that's largely unchanged from Uncharted 1 and an incredibly stupid main character that should have been shot for willingly let humanity die. All because he couldn't get over his irresponsibility as a parent and letting his kid get shot. A mediocre game with a an infuriating ending.

And I'm in the Chrono Cross is better than Trigger camp.

I thought the bit where

Code:
the smugglers showed up and they were getting chased by CG blobs was unnecessary and dragged a bit. It was the only bit that felt like it was from an Abrams movie

Otherwise, yeah, the pacing was pretty good.

As for characters:
Code:
Poe's was non existent. That was disappointing.

And that was one of the first things I was thinking when watching: "Hey, the storm troopers are hitting stuff!"

Some asshole has been running around on youtube videos spoiling a huge part of the movie...not gonna share since I don't suck but it was depressing as fuck. I hope he's wrong.

Sorry you got spoiled man.

I hid anything remotely spoilery to avoid trying to upset people.

I've been staying away from Star Wars stuff, including trailers, for the last couple of months.

Yeah, as far as I know.

There was a thing on 60 minutes about the movie last week and it showed Williams doing the score.

I saw Star Wars tonight. I will be deliberately vague.

I liked:

The story and characters overall.

The main villain

The humour

The cameos

The way they set up the next two films

I didn't like:

Code:
One character's non existent personality (I had the feeling they were going to be the Han Solo of the new trilogy and I was wrong. They ended up being incredibly paper thin and bland)

The continual nods to the old films as in copy/pasting elements

One character's death but I get why they did it.

One character's reveal

Indifferent to:

The soundtrack - nothing really stood out as being new or memorable.

Overall, pretty good.

I'm not a fan of Abrams films so I went in with muted expectations and came out pleasantly surprised.

the main story is kinda short, I'd say 15 hours worth of missions and cutscenes. It's pretty dramatic, with a big reveal every other chapter or so.

Meanwhile, there are also countless other missions that help flesh out New LA and its citizens. There are over a dozen potential team members with their own stories (usually chains of three missions), and some of these stories overlap. For instance, in one questline, an enemy alien messes with the water supply. You catch the culprit in another questline.

That's helpful, thanks.

Being more visible opens them up to more ridicule sure, but they seem to also be /selling/ on Steam, so

Shielding something from ridicule/criticism by hiding it from everyone really isn't a good thing.

wrt Journey though I'm pretty sure that's not the game. I'm pretty sure they're just trapping the band in computers ala SMT1 and sealing them on Steam to protect future generations from roving bands of streetlight people hellbent on making all the lights go out in the city.

Klutz has a point though - most of the people on steam are the ones who laugh at weeaboo games and talk shit about them. They have no interest in FF10 - they're too busy still comparing Tidus to Meg Ryan.

I don't see how giving games to a bunch of people who are just going to shit on them serves any purpose.
