My friend emailed this to me today. I have to say, the commentary is pretty hilarious. He's far more patient and resilient than I would've been.

I'm really hoping for a lot from this game, so I hope I can get into it as much as I did V, which was the first title I played in the series and I enjoyed it greatly. Hmmm. It's too bad you haven't played I & II - the payoff would be bigger later in the game. If you could make it through the beginning of Suiko V, which is pretty slow, you should be able to persevere through the beginning of Suiko 3.

The Rest / General Discussions / What makes a game age well?

Games age well due to an actually engaging story and / or fun gameplay. What he said. Oh, and a good soundtrack helps. I can play a game with crappy graphics if the soundtrack is good.

The thread seems kinda vague on that. The title's flat out Squaresoft, not Square Enix or simply Square, and most of the games in the original post were Square releases. Which was my deliberate point. I mostly enjoyed stuff from the Squaresoft PS1 era before they merged with Enix.

hohoho
Inspired by the FF thread, I thought this might make for some interesting discussion.
Top 3 favourite/least favourite Square RPGs?
I know I'm going to get shit for my list, because they're all from the PS1 era, which is when I think Square was at its pinnacle.
Favourites:
1. Chrono Cross - There. I said it. I like it more than Chrono Trigger. I pretty much like everything about it. Combat, soundtrack, story - everything. I like Chrono Trigger...but CC just oozes atmosphere that CT doesn't have.
2. Legend of Mana - I like the graphics, soundtrack but most of all I liked the anthology style of the game. If most RPGs are a giant novel, this was an anthology of short stories, and I dug it.
3. Saga Frontier II - Another somewhat anthology style game, with similar graphics to LOM. Probably why I like it so much. Great soundtrack too.
Least favourite:
1. Threads of Fate - Reasonably interesting story, great soundtrack, insanely broken platforming elements
2. Drag-on Dragoon - Another one I wanted to like but I found the story dull and the combat repetitive.
3. Breath of Fire I - Didn't age very well.
