4816  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Horror RPGs on: April 28, 2008, 05:25:44 PM
Pretty much already been said here but

Koudelka
Shadow Hearts 1 (which was very Lovecraftian)
Persona games  (particularly Persona 2)
Parasite Eve 1 & 2

Which is a shame, because I'd like to see more of a blending of the two.

FF 8 - Deservedly so. Most ridiculous plot in the history of RPGs.

Legend of Dragoon - More generic than a Tales game and the worst fighting system in the history of RPGs. I like bits of the soundtrack though. (I own it)

Xenosaga II - Which is too bad. The first disc actually isn't that bad, and I liked the more "harder" sci fi feel of it. The second disc just drags and drags and the battle system gets sludgier and sludgier to use. Pretty disappointing.

FF X - Now this is the one I don't get. I understand why people found Tidus whiny, but the game itself was great. It seemed like they made a real effort to differentiate this game from the PS1 games and try new stuff. Voice acting was great, as was the battle system. This one I just don't get. I guess it was "cool" to bash Square at this point.

Suikoden III - Now this is another one I don't get. The story was the most "adult" of the three games. And there was a real payoff for people who had played all three games when they discovered who the villain was. Yet all people did was bitch about Thomas and the battle system. (Well, the battle system I can understand)

It's going to be a Jack Thompson wankfest when this game comes out.

I thought it was pretty meh. But not terrible. Just filler.

Partially I think it's because I'm waiting so eagerly for next week's episode.

I'm writing from Hong Kong.

I hated my job, I hated Taiwan.

I quit, I'm heading home to get a summer job and a cheap sublet from some desperate uni student.

I really hate it when people decide to take their misfortunes and exaggerate them like this. I agree what happened to her sucks, but reading articles like this just pisses me off because I know there's going to be people that fall for the whole "GAWD DOCTORS SUCK" mentality that it creates.

I agree with you, although when I had pins taken out of my wrist, the doctors wouldn't give me anesthetic because they had to know if it was hurting me too much, in case they were doing nerve damage.

It fucking *sucked*.

How do you not have wisdom teeth? I didn't think that was possible...

It is, just rare.

I'm more highly evolved than the rest of you.

Dear god that would be awful. I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled last year, and if they would have left me in the room on anesthesia I would have been freaking out more than that lady was

Thankfully, I don't have any wisdom teeth - as in I have never had any.

I'm grateful I don't have to go through that crap .
4825  The Rest / General Discussions / Putting Together the 'History of RPGs' on: April 20, 2008, 01:34:34 AM
From Kotaku

Putting Together the 'History of RPGs' Class Michael Abbott of The Brainy Gamer is putting together an undergraduate seminar on the history of the RPG (fun!), and the whole process of deciding what games to include and the reasons for that is pretty interesting admittedly, I find syllabus construction to be an interesting process that can tell you a lot about the person teaching the class (and a simple fact of life for those of us who want to stay in the Ivory Tower). He's put together a lengthy list of RPGs that will be whittled down (with some assistance from helpful readers) to 15 titles that will fulfill his criteria:

Historical scope - I want to expose students to the historical arc of RPGs, reflecting their origins and evolution. I realize I could spend weeks on mimesis, Tolkien, PnP Dungeons and Dragons, etc., but I'm keen to get them playing and studying electronic games as soon as possible.

Breadth - It's important that I provide students with a wide range of RPG games encompassing a variety of gameplay and design variations. The syllabus needn't be a "greatest hits" collection. A classic like Chrono Trigger may or may not make the list depending on how many other Square-developed SNES JRPG titles make the list ....

Impact - I want to assign games that have made a notable impact or illustrate important transitions in the evolution of the medium

I'm curious to see the eventual syllabus, and Abbott has promised to keep readers in the loop regarding the final product, as well as the bibliography and reading list for the class. Sounds like exactly the kind of class I'd love to audit to offset the thrilling excitement of "The Postwar and the Idea of Japan: History and Historiography."

Also sounds like he wants people to do his work for him.

Glad to hear everyone's okay.

They can be really scary things.

I remember being woken up at about 4 or 5 in the morning once when I lived in Japan, half dozey until I suddenly heard smashing as most of my cups and glasses were falling from the shelf into the sink.

One of the scariest things I've ever been through.
