4921  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Top 5 RPGs everyone loves to hate on: May 01, 2008, 05:33:08 PM
I think on this board, FF9 gets a lot of love. Out in the non RPG loving universe, not so much.

I agree with Dice though, Legend of Mana gets way more hate than it deserves.

I would disagree with him about Saga Frontier 2, which seems mostly greeted by indifference.

Unlimited Saga however, is the one people like to squat over and take a dump on.
4922  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Star Ocean 1 & 2 Remakes on: May 01, 2008, 05:25:49 PM
I would guess that Star Ocean 1 will be out in the fall for Xmas, and maybe SO 2 will be out in the spring? Maybe in that dead time around February/March of next year?

I've never played SO1 on rom, so I would like to pick this up.

Bought it on Tuesday morning. Noticed that the store wasn't IDing anyone who bought it, including the 16 year old who offered me 20 bucks to buy it for him. I told him try to buy it first, if they ID you, come and talk to me.

Geez I remember the days when we did that with booze....now it's video games?

The game itself -

Graphics are pretty swish, as Degolas says.

I'm liking the story as well.
Not crazy about the new driving controls as I'm constantly trying to use the "old" GTA controls to drive instinctively, and it keeps fucking me up.

Other than that, no real complaints.

The multiplayer is really fun, when it works.

Been playing tonight, with no lag at all?

What's your PS3 user name? I'll add you to my friends list, if you don't mind.

My PS3 name is Wuggyboobeaufuf.

Which is a pain in the ass to type and why I asked for yours.

I think I need to talk about the videogame Steambot Chronicles for a bit.

I picked this up at Xmas and never got around to it, partly because my PS2 died.

I think I'll give it a whirl after Persona 3.

I am alternating between P3 Fes and getting pissed off at GTA IV multiplayer.

All this bickering...

GTA4  is fucking AWESOME!!! Bought it this morning and seriously it kicks ass.

Been playing some multiplayer and shooting another guy, who's chasing you with a gunship helicopter, down with a rocket launcher makes this game worth a PERFECT 10!

As did I. So far, so great.

Are you on PS3 or Xbox Live?

Got P3 Fes yesterday.

This is the third time I've started this bloody game. I *will* finish it.

Nice reference to UNIT dating. Interesting to see UNIT again.

Would've been nice to see Bessie. No mention of the Brig? :(

More mention of the Timewar, interesting.

Overall, good episode. Nice to see the Sontarans again.

I wasn't disappointed.

Watched No Country for Old Men today. Movie was awesome except for the ending, which I hated with a passion. The last few movies I have watched have the left the ending to the viewers imagination and it is really starting to tick me off. Oh well, still a good movie.

I wouldn't say there's much to imagine at all.

Josh Brolin's character gets killed. Then his wife gets killed. Murderer escapes, Tommy Lee Jones retires and wonders if the world is a good place

The End.

It wasn't a smack you in the face ending, but an ending nonetheless.

On the plane home I watched

No Country For Old Men
There Will Be Blood (Now *that's* a movie with no ending)
Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story

It was a 14 hour flight from Hong Kong to Toronto.

I dunno, wouldn't it be hard to find ammo in a game franchise where you traditionally chainsaw down ghouls and monsters?

The only other humans in the game have always only been the ones you try the save.

Ol' Jacky boy could get frothed up over Nintendogs if he tried...

Considering what he said about the Sims, you're exactly right.

Pretty much already been said here but

Shadow Hearts 1 (which was very Lovecraftian)
Persona games  (particularly Persona 2)
Parasite Eve 1 & 2

Which is a shame, because I'd like to see more of a blending of the two.

FF 8 - Deservedly so. Most ridiculous plot in the history of RPGs.

Legend of Dragoon - More generic than a Tales game and the worst fighting system in the history of RPGs. I like bits of the soundtrack though. (I own it)

Xenosaga II - Which is too bad. The first disc actually isn't that bad, and I liked the more "harder" sci fi feel of it. The second disc just drags and drags and the battle system gets sludgier and sludgier to use. Pretty disappointing.

FF X - Now this is the one I don't get. I understand why people found Tidus whiny, but the game itself was great. It seemed like they made a real effort to differentiate this game from the PS1 games and try new stuff. Voice acting was great, as was the battle system. This one I just don't get. I guess it was "cool" to bash Square at this point.

Suikoden III - Now this is another one I don't get. The story was the most "adult" of the three games. And there was a real payoff for people who had played all three games when they discovered who the villain was. Yet all people did was bitch about Thomas and the battle system. (Well, the battle system I can understand)

It's going to be a Jack Thompson wankfest when this game comes out.
