Dear god that would be awful. I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled last year, and if they would have left me in the room on anesthesia I would have been freaking out more than that lady was

Thankfully, I don't have any wisdom teeth - as in I have never had any.

I'm grateful I don't have to go through that crap .
5012  The Rest / General Discussions / Putting Together the 'History of RPGs' on: April 20, 2008, 01:34:34 AM
From Kotaku

Putting Together the 'History of RPGs' Class Michael Abbott of The Brainy Gamer is putting together an undergraduate seminar on the history of the RPG (fun!), and the whole process of deciding what games to include and the reasons for that is pretty interesting admittedly, I find syllabus construction to be an interesting process that can tell you a lot about the person teaching the class (and a simple fact of life for those of us who want to stay in the Ivory Tower). He's put together a lengthy list of RPGs that will be whittled down (with some assistance from helpful readers) to 15 titles that will fulfill his criteria:

Historical scope - I want to expose students to the historical arc of RPGs, reflecting their origins and evolution. I realize I could spend weeks on mimesis, Tolkien, PnP Dungeons and Dragons, etc., but I'm keen to get them playing and studying electronic games as soon as possible.

Breadth - It's important that I provide students with a wide range of RPG games encompassing a variety of gameplay and design variations. The syllabus needn't be a "greatest hits" collection. A classic like Chrono Trigger may or may not make the list depending on how many other Square-developed SNES JRPG titles make the list ....

Impact - I want to assign games that have made a notable impact or illustrate important transitions in the evolution of the medium

I'm curious to see the eventual syllabus, and Abbott has promised to keep readers in the loop regarding the final product, as well as the bibliography and reading list for the class. Sounds like exactly the kind of class I'd love to audit to offset the thrilling excitement of "The Postwar and the Idea of Japan: History and Historiography."

Also sounds like he wants people to do his work for him.

Glad to hear everyone's okay.

They can be really scary things.

I remember being woken up at about 4 or 5 in the morning once when I lived in Japan, half dozey until I suddenly heard smashing as most of my cups and glasses were falling from the shelf into the sink.

One of the scariest things I've ever been through.

Jesus Christ I hope those rumours aren't true.

I've heard bits and bobs of all of them over the past while, but goddamn, that would be more fanwanky than Daleks vs Cybermen.

One of the recurring themes of the year is

It was on a sticker of the taxi in episode 1. The podcast pointed it out and it's going to be part of the
Sontaran plan
, but I don't know exactly how.

Do you mean the Pompeii one? I did actually see it, and thought it was pretty bad, to be honest. It contained all the reasons I got tired with the series.

Yeah, I did.

I thought it was the first of the "new" Doctor Who to feel like an "old" Doctor Who. Really felt like an old Hartnell episode.

What didn't you like about it?

God Damn, I love Killers.

I saw this a little while ago, but it looks like this is being as a daily strip.

Imagine if they went back and did all of the strips from the very beginning?

That would be sweet.
5024  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Star ocean 4 on: April 14, 2008, 10:22:20 AM
I dunno. Granted the Star Ocean remakes are Sony exclusive, but I get the feeling that this could be multi-platform.

Losfer's right though. Just announce the damn platform already.

The new series has Catherine Tate. Therefore Deg doesn't watch.

Watch this week's episode. Seriously.

You'll change your mind.

It was fucking *great*.
