5011  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Torchwood/Dr. Who discussion on: April 06, 2008, 10:47:39 AM
Anyone besides me seen the first episode of the new Doctor Who series yet?

But the promise of sci-fi, futuristic stuff, and the exploration of space has always been in Star Ocean games, and all of them (1, 2, and 3) have blue-balled us on this and stuck us on backwater bumfuck planets for the entire game.  I hope Star Ocean 4 makes good on its promise of interstellar travel and more sci-fi futuristic stuff.

I have *not* played SO3 yet. I know about the giant spoiler.

I thought after *the giant spoiler* you switched to a more modern planet.

Lady In The Water is *astoundingly* awful.

As for me - Mystery Men. Forgot how good it was.

Come on, you know nothing's going to happen.

And no one is playing Portal?

Shadow of the Colossus is a Greatest Hit title, he needs to dig deeper for his niche games.

Good point, hadn't thought about that.

"And yet here's the rub. The gaming world isn't holding up its end of the bargain. Fans (and publishers, to some extent) are still resisting Hollywood with territorial reluctance, thinking that if they give away a game's rights to a studio, Hollywood will inevitably "piss all over our childhood."

Because they do - again and again. (See Dragonball Z movie)

"Part of this is because there's been a past pattern. That's fair. But it's also because the game community fundamentally believes filmmakers just don't understand why games are so great, and if they would only directly and literally translate a game to film, it would succeed beyond all expectations."

No, it's because idiot executives come in and change things to try and appeal to the broadest audience possible, to make the most money, whether it makes sense in regards to the movie or not.

"Frankly, in the case of most games, this is just not true. We all need to take a long look in the mirror and realize that there are very few mainstream game franchises that could stand next to the best comics of the 1980's, or the best movies ever. And yes, Shadow of the Colossus and Portal are hands-down better than most anything out there, but no one is playing those games. What is the mainstream audience playing? Halo 3. "

And the ones that *aren't* mainstream? (Like SMT?)

And no one is playing Portal?

What the hell is this idiot smoking?

That type of freedom, not really.

More planets hell yes, particularly hi-tech ones and more galaxy spanning adventure (this would obviously be easier and more likely if they do more hi-tech planets/locations anyway).

So you'd rather just go from planet to planet in a straight line?

I had read the book ages ago and was looking forward to the movie.

Went to see it with a group of friends and I was the only one who liked it.

My friend from New Zealand was watching De Niro and just kept saying "That's just not right" through every scene De Niro was in.
5019  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Sam & Max officially announced for Wii on: April 05, 2008, 01:25:31 PM
Between Sam & Max and Zack & Wiki , along with No More Heroes and a new Trauma Center game, I'm almost convinced to buy a Wii.

most of the 360's made after Nov last year are pretty stable... I've had mine since Jan, and its still going strong...

Yeah, but there's supposed to be a new model coming out this summer which has fixed most of the RROD issues. I will possibly get a 360 for my birthday in August since they're supposed to be coming out in June/July.

in any case, isn't Mass Effect kinda "sand-box" type of game? Exploration and the like is something that's not seen much in JRPGs hey?

That's true, and I hadn't thought about it that way. I guess I just would just like a little more freedom and be able to go to a whole bunch of different planets. Who doesn't want that in a sci fi game?

How is it?  :(

It's good. Impressively good.

Give it a download - I found it on IsoHunt.

Degolas - Just got into Black Mountain about a week ago after reading about them.

They are impressively good.

Oh yeah - A Clash/Killers mashup.

To put this on topic,

I want planetary exploration.

I know Mass Effect had it - but I haven't played it yet and probably won't until the fall (when I plan to pick up the new model of 360 that supposedly doesn't crap out after 2 days).

A prequel doesn't really fill me with confidence, but the expansiveness (potentially) does.
5024  Media / Single-Player RPGs / The World Ends With You on: April 05, 2008, 05:53:18 AM
Well there are also space limitations to think about.

Of course they can fit a 40 hour FF6 on a gameboy cartridge.

But "modern day" graphics and such on a DS cartridge + music = 40 hours?

Might be tough to fit. I wasn't expecting a 40 hour game on the DS.

I'm just happy to hear that it sounds like it doesn't suck.

Noticed the first review is up.

Sounds interesting, if a little like SMT.

Looking forward to something new.
