5191  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Overrated & Underrated (with a twist!) on: October 25, 2007, 09:17:35 AM
I didn't hate SH: C but I didn't like their backpedaling and re-writing of Roger Bacon's character. It felt forced and out of place.

Chrono Trigger just leaves me indifferent. I like it - but I prefer Chrono Cross.

As for overrated? Might as well get it out of the way.

Final Fantasy 7.

It's translation is.....not rubbish....but dodgy.
The first disc is good. Quite good, in fact and it really feels markedly different from other FF games. Then, once you get to the world map, it feels fairly typical(ish) and there's lots of rubbish about Ancient, Gaia etc.
It just left me...indifferent.

Underrated? Legend of Mana.

They did a neat twist on the typical RPG formula. If RPGs are "novels", then LOM is a short story anthology. Great graphics for PS1 era, great soundtrack, really distinctive characters and style. Everything just "clicked" for me. I liked the fact the some stories weren't about combat and were just bits of plot or character moments. (It's the same reason I like Tsugunai)

I'll grant that the combat system got repetitive at times, but at least you had different magic attacks which spiced things up.

Overall, most of the people who bitched about it, bitched about it because it wasn't "Secret of Mana 2" rather than what the game was actually like.

This week's episode was very, very good. Finally seemed to start building to something. I liked the lack of Claire, I'm really getting sick of her. Best episode of Season 2.

That dick on CNN who said "people who hate America are losing their homes right now" should be strung up and pelted with rocks.

That kind of stuff is just not cool.

I'm not even American and I'm pissed off.

The guy's name is Glenn Beck and the quote is as follows:

"I think there is a handful of people who hate America. Unfortunately for them, a lot of them are losing their homes in a forest fire today."

Unforunately for us, Glenn Beck is not on fire today.

I'm really, really digging Xenosaga III. It just seems like they really listened to people's complaints about XIII and tried really hard to fix everything that people didn't like.

I'm glad some of you took the time to watch XII's cutscenes and give the third game a shot, though. :)

I actually got it for Xmas last year, and am just getting around to it now!

It wasn't so much that Xeno II was difficult, just very, very tedious.

And while I liked Xeno II's story, Xeno III already has some of the grand epicness that I liked so much about Xeno I.

I still prefer Momo's first voice over the voice in II and III.

Did they change Alan's voice? It sounds like it.

Unfortunately it was too little to late.  After the first two game I don't think most people were willing to give the series a second/ third chance regardless of how good XSIII turned out.

I quite liked the first one. I thought it was also quite well received.

I gave up on Xeno II.

I watched the cut scenes on Youtube and started up Xeno III tonight.

I have to admit, the story was pretty good. I didn't even mind that the gameplay focused on Jr. It's just that the gameplay felt so cumbersome and forced. And tedious.

What a difference a game makes. The battle system feels fast and *way* less tedious than Xeno II.  Fluid is the word.

And I dig the trap system too.

And the jazz soundtrack? Fucking excellent.

I gather folks around hear are fairly fond of Xeno III?

I've avoided most of the topics on it because of spoilers.

Watched Tri Gun on Sunday.

(Yes, all of it)

I'm watching the cutscenes on Youtube.

I'm going to start Ep 3 as soon as I'm done.

So, is it worth it, or should I just skip ahead?

I decided to finally get back to playing more XS II so I can finally finish and eventually start XS III since I heard great things about it.  I just got to the Labyrinthos, so I think I've been progressing pretty well :::crosses fingers nearing the end:::.  I will say I am happy they really utilized and integrated the A.M.W.S. better into the game.  I know in the first XS I barely used them..

I've been putting off Xenosaga II for over a month...I just can't go on.

I want to start Xeno III....yet I can't bring myself to fire up Xeno II again. It really does suck.

Any suggestions?

I watched Tri-gun today (All of it) for the first time in about 3 years. I enjoyed it more this time than I remember last time, though the last episode and the plant line still bugs me, because it comes from nowhere.

They better improve the fucking encounter rate.

Wait... I'm confused, if Zelda doesn't go here, why does Okami, which is more of an RPG than Zelda? I didn't even think to check here, as all previous Okami topics were in the Console RPG forum. Are we getting stricter about placement?

No. I made the call when I started the topic to place it in Misc. Games, rather than Console RPGs, because it's not *really* an RPG, and thought it would be better placed here. And because I figured one of the mods would grind my tits for putting it in the wrong place.

Better safe than sorry.

If Japan strengthens its military power and conquers South Korea, they will respect us more."

The S. Koreans say alot worse about the Japanese.

You know, you just have to look in the right places (be it in Japan or South Korea or any other country for that matter), and you will always find people who say worse things than the example cited by Ryan. However that obviously wasn't his point.

And fair enough, that's not what I meant.

I just meant I'm stunned (not as much now, just saddened) to hear Koreans talk about Japan. It's drilled into them from an early age that Japan is the devil.

A typical conversation goes something like:

"Japan is bad".

Me - "Why?"

"Because".

Me - "Because why?"

"Just because".

Me - "Just because why? "

"Teacher! Stop bugging me!"
