1  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: FINAL FANTASY XIII on: April 03, 2010, 02:07:14 AM
Holy shit, I'm actually posting for the first time in years...

In any case, I've put in 27 hours into FF13 so far. I kept crossing my fingers and hoping and wishing and giving it every benefit of the doubt along the way. Well, tonight I've reached the point where I can do so no longer. For 27 hours the game has been this: cutscene BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE cutscene BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE  BATTLE BATTLE cutscene BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE  BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT. There is nothing in this game besides battles and watching cutscenes. In RPGs, the parts I enjoy the most are the non-battle parts - towns to explore, characters to talk to, various side quests to complete, etc. This game has none of that.

Now I've failed to mention prior to this that the aforementioned cutscenes are mostly cringe-inducing with a god-awful, generic script featuring an unlikable (I might even say very hate-able) bunch of characters. Yes, the battle system is good. Yes, the game looks nice. But that's about it as far as the positives.

After all these years and all the hype and this is what we get?

Fuck you, Square.

Yup, "Let the Right One In" is indeed very awesome. Easily one of the best films that I've watched in the last couple years. And the soundtrack is delicious.

Not really thrilled at the idea of a remake though. It's like how they're remaking Oldboy. Just...no.
3  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Dead Space on: October 19, 2008, 01:36:12 AM
I'm about 7 hours in and damn, this game is awesome. Like it's been mentioned, Dead Space is like RE4 + Bioshock + in space. But yeah, it's easily the best game I've played since Mass Effect. It looks gorgeous, the sound/music is appropriately creepy and the story/setting is intriguing enough. Not to mention the lack of an in game HUD makes it an even more immersive experience.

Also, damn...I haven't posted in forever.

Watched Into the Wild. Amazing film. Now this is the movie that should've won Best Picture.

How the fuck is this a big story? It's not really a man.

About 10 hours into Crisis Core. It's alright so far, I guess, but the combat is so fricking boring. I wish I had party members who fought alongside me ( a la Rogue Galaxy). Also, the whole slot effect shit sucks major ass - you can't control it and it slows down the length of battles considerably - by the time the thing spins and we see see the animation and everything, I could've killed that guy 5 times over. Why exactly can't I skip the limit break animations again?

Also, Square really fucked up with Midgar. It was such an interesting setting in FFVII, but here it's drab, boring, lifeless and dull.
7  The Rest / General Discussions / Wii shorteges may end later this year on: March 31, 2008, 02:53:02 PM
Personally, I could care less. I don't have a Wii and I don't want a Wii (and I know that Nintendo is bottlenecking the supply to artificially raise demand). I still feel it's overpriced by at least $50 bucks for the hardware that you're getting. And the fact that it doesn't support HD pisses me off to no end. But what it comes down to obviously are the games - the only thing that looks remotely interesting is Super Paper Mario and No More Heroes. Other than that, everything is basically the exact same thing we've seen at least half a dozen times before on previous Nintendo systems - Mario, Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Mario Fucking Curling.

I still don't get the whole Wii obsession and maybe I never will. I just can't see what's so particularly engaging about playing a tennis/golf/baseball mini-game where instead of pressing a button you half-heartedly flick your wrist for the same effect.

Watched The Beach. I liked it. Especially the hot French girl. Man, she was hot.

Snip.

Like I said in my response to this survey, I could care less what a stranger does to his/her body. I don't give a flying fuck if you're hitting yourself over the head with a shovel every night or doing crack or consuming 10,000 calories on a daily basis. It's your body, not mine. If you can deal with the negative health aspects, etc. it ain't my business to butt in and tell you what to do. (However, if you think that I feel compassion towards some fat fuck waddling down the street, then you clearly don't know me very well. It's like feeling compassion for a smoker who gets lung cancer after smoking for X amount of years. Well, what the fuck were you expecting?)

The thing with smokers is all the secondhand smoke. It smells nasty as all hell and makes your clothes smell likewise. It's easy to say, oh, wait we have laws preventing smoking indoors or whatever, but it's not like you can put smokers in a little glass box and keep their secondhand smoke trapped in there. And from my personal experience, a lot of smokers think it's perfectly OK to smoke in the vicinity of others and are often not even cognizant that others may not exactly love all that smoke.

The thing is, here in the US, we non-smokers have it pretty good compared to pretty much everywhere else. For example, I was in Paris last year and holy fucking shit, pretty much everyone lights up at some point or another - indoors, outdoors, pretty much everywhere. So I'm sitting there in a cafe trying to enjoy breakfast when every single asshole in the adjacent tables is blowing smoke right in your face from all directions while I'm having a meal. It was like the 7.1 Dolby Digital surround sound version of secondhand smoke all up in my face. (France actually recently passed a law against smoking inside cafes and the like effective the first of this year, so it looks like some things are slowly changing for the better.)

1. Do you smoke cigarettes?
No.

If no, skip to question 12.

I liked it. Some nice music, an interesting enough storyline, some good characters/dialogue and a decent battle system. Can't really say much more since it's been a long while since I played it. The only thing that ruined the game for me was the last boss, which was harder than all the other enemies in the game...combined. So I never did get to see the ending. But I'd say that it's definitely worth playing.

Played through God of War: Chain of Olympus. Pretty awesome game, even by non-PSP standards.

Oh and Ash, I thought that the fun actually began once you get to Cheerleaders (the very hard) mode in Ouendan 2. Wait till you beat it and unlock the "blind" mode or whatever (basically removes the timer circles and makes everything just a bit more interesting). Now that shit is fucking entertaining, especially the last level.

Finished Apollo Justice. Good game, but for the love of all that is holy, no more showbiz themed cases.  I think we've all had enough of that goddamn circus and samurai show crap. I will admit, I did like the last case, but still. Just, no.

Played a bit more Lost Odyssey. Is it just me or are the loading times slowly but surely increasing? I'm on disc 2 and I often have to sit around and wait for the camera to spin around a good 20 seconds while it loads the characters and whatnot during battles.

This, my friends, is why God invented alcohol.

Holy shit, I'm actually playing some games (albeit quite slowly).

On case 3 of Apollo Justice. Like the game so far.

Also, just got to the second disc of Lost Odyssey. I'll be honest, I kinda expected more after years of hype and whatnot but it's been pretty decent. I do wish they stuck to the Shadow Hearts-esque "press the button at the right time for max damage" scheme as opposed to this silly "hold the trigger, then release" fiasco they've got going on. My favorite part is probably the stories that you "unlock" and I wish there were more of them. Anyone know the total number of these stories in the whole game?
