Devil Summoner - Episode 10 (~32hrs).  Leveling to fill up the loyalty is easy but unlocking the special attack or defense and the special boost is taking a long time now that I have high level demons.  I try to pass on quick study to all my demons so leveling goes faster.  I also sold all the vases so I have a lot of money.  Once I level them up I'll register them and then buy them so I can fuse them.

Like TBD said it is an action rpg, though Eusis is correct too.  Demons do have have a weakness and they are stunned when you hit them with it.  When they are stunned, you do critical damage and also have a chance to capture them in one of your spirit tubes (recruit them).

I guess I should elaborate.  The main character is equipped with a sword and a gun.  Later in the game you can fuse a demon to the sword to boost the attack power of it and also give yourself additional stats whether it is strength, magic, vitality, or luck.  It also can give you an additional property such as resistance to a certain element: fire, force, etc.  The magic stat basically affects the strength of the demons you summon.  The main character himself cannot do magic, that is what the gun is for.  You can load different kinds of bullets into it.  They have the elemental ones, but also status effect ones such as poison, charm, panic, etc.  You basically use the gun to stun them (it happens even if it isn't their weakness but they are stunned for a shorter length of time).  If you hit their weakness then the duration is longer and like I said before you can hit them critically and capture them.
543  Media / Single-Player RPGs / it happend to you that you stop play because you use faq? on: October 17, 2006, 12:33:00 PM
Sometimes when I use a FAQ, it takes away the fun.  I find myself just following directions and not exploring or even thinking.  When that happens, I quit.  Since I know that happens, I only consult it if I'm stuck and then I stop.  Still I'm often tempted to use FAQs these days since sometimes you need to answer a certain way or do a certain thing to get the best ending.  But I'd rather answer the question the way I would if I were indeed that person.  Even if I get a crappy ending, it's okay since I earned it.  Weird I know.

Ah yes, XSIII is a great game.  I love that you can view the movies at any time after seeing them.

Devil Summoner:  Episode 9 (~28 hrs in).  I'm having fun so far.  The last few episodes went by quickly so I plan on having a leveling/fusion session tonight.  Some of my demons aren't up to par with the enemies.
545  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army on: October 17, 2006, 12:15:29 PM
I've been playing the heck out of this game.  So far I'm in episode 9 (~28hrs in).  At first I wasn't sure about the game.  I never read the previews (maybe skimmed one) so I didn't know it wasn't turn based and was an action rpg.  That kinda threw me for a loop.  I agree that the static camera in battles can get annoying.  If I'm in the back and there is a lot of action in the front of my character (as is always the case), I can't see what I'm hitting.  So mainly I start blindly swinging my sword until I see the enemies health bar go down.  It's weird but I often find myself just staring at the top right corner during battles.

As far as the episodes go, they vary in length.  The earlier episodes were lengthier.  They also are all connected to the main story.

The lack of voice acting doesn't bother me at all.  Keep in mind I'm the kind to skip the v.a. and just read the text because either the v.a. is bad or they speak too slowly.  Also this eliminates annoying battle cries/sayings.  Instead they have character art of them pop up in the bottom corner of the battle screen saying stuff like "Hells yes, anarchy in the Capital."  It's kinda cute and I love the art.

I find the best part of the game is the demon fusion.  I had a blast with this in Nocturne.  For the most part, I find myself running around leveling up demons so I can get the best fusions with them.  I find some of the demons have bad A.I., while others are just fine.  I don't know if this is on purpose or what.  Oh, and there are new demons that I have never seen in the DDS games or Nocturne.

Edited to add:  Oh yeah, this game is the easiest of the SMT games I've played (Persona 2, Nocturne, DDS 1 &2).

So I just finished DQ8 after many months of playing.  It's a good game and I'll definitely buy DQ9 when it comes out.  I can't say that I didn't get tired of it at the end.  I think it was a little too long for me.  I prefer my RPGs to be shorter now days.

DQ8 -  Yes!  I finally beat this game.  I'm not going for the second ending since I'm all DQ'd out.
548  The Rest / General Discussions / Wii pre-orders start tomorrow! on: October 13, 2006, 11:54:16 AM
Yeah, I too was under the impression that the Wii was going to be in abundant supply.  I didn't think I needed to pre-order the thing.  Of course, I'm not out to have it day one.  I'm waiting for some RPGs of course.  Also my money is going towards all of the games coming out on the PS2 and DS before Christmas.  I don't think I can swing buying another console.

It took me about 43 hrs to finish XSIII.  I do make sure I have "me" time and that includes gaming.  I'm not married and I don't have kids so I get a lot of it I suppose.  Actually XSIII is a really good game that you'll want to play.  Time will go fast when you play it unlike some of the games you listed like Magna Carta.  I actually read a book while I played that game.  I kid you not.

You should be able to finish WA4 quickly since it is a short game.  I can tell you now DQ8 is long.  I'm currently playing it and I'm 70 something hrs in.

Yes, she's a fine example of character development.  They made me  hate  her.

DQ8 -  70something hrs in
Just got the dark leaf to pinpoint evil on the map.
I'm running around getting money for equipment and using the alchemy pot before I advance the story.
553  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Tales of the Abyss on: October 12, 2006, 01:00:16 PM
Yes I picked this up.  I wish the release of games were more staggered so I can actually comment in depth on a game instead of saying I only picked it up and have yet to play it.

As for Legendia, I agree with you Lovely.  It does an excellent job with character development.
554  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army on: October 12, 2006, 12:55:07 PM
Yeah I picked my copy up yesterday along with TotA.  I'll probably get around to playing it next month if I'm lucky.  :(  I have a stack of unopened games next to my tv now and it's going to get higher in the next few months.
555  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Level 5 announces new game: A... DS Graphic Adventure? on: October 12, 2006, 12:45:47 PM
Ooooh.  Hearing about this and some of the other more recent announcements like Dual Motives and Sinking Island make me one happy DS owner.
